Taxonomy & naming
Cetopsis coecutiens was first described by the German naturalist Martin Hinrich Carl Lichtenstein in 1819, originally under the genus Silurus before being transferred to Cetopsis. The family Cetopsidae — the whale catfishes — is a small Neotropical family whose members were historically scattered among several genera and families before molecular work confirmed them as a coherent lineage within Siluriformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Cetopsis coecutiens under its current combination as the valid name.
The genus Cetopsis is the most species-rich genus within Cetopsidae, containing a handful of similarly built, naked-skinned, nearly blind catfishes. The epithet coecutiens comes from the Latin caecutio, meaning 'to be nearly blind' or 'to have impaired vision', a direct reference to the reduced, largely non-functional eyes of this and related species in the genus. This eye reduction is consistent with a crepuscular and nocturnal lifestyle spent foraging close to the substrate in turbid Amazonian waters.
Morphology
The most immediately striking feature of Cetopsis coecutiens is its smoothly rounded, cylindrical body — the profile that gives the Cetopsidae their common name of whale catfishes. The skin is entirely naked (no scales and no bony plates), smooth and covered in abundant mucus. The eyes are strongly reduced and appear as small, barely functional pinpoints, largely overgrown by skin; this is not damage but the normal adult condition for the species.
Maximum recorded size is 10.5 in total length (FishBase), with typical adults reaching close to that figure in South American rivers. Three pairs of barbels are present on the snout; the fins are soft-rayed without the locking spines found in many other catfish families, which distinguishes Cetopsis from armoured or squeaker catfishes. The body is typically pale blue-grey to silvery-blue, sometimes with faint darker mottling. The powerful, muscular jaws house sharp, recurved teeth capable of rasping flesh and inflicting a significant bite.
Habitat
Cetopsis coecutiens has a broad Neotropical distribution across three major South American basins: the Amazon basin (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Peru), the río Orinoco basin (Colombia and Venezuela) and the rio Tocantins basin (Brazil). It occupies the middle to lower reaches of large lowland rivers and their tributaries, typically in warm, soft to moderately hard waters.
The species favours turbid, slow to moderate currents over sandy or silty substrates, where its reduced eyes are less of a handicap. Water parameters recorded from its range indicate temperatures of 72–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.4 and soft to moderately hard water (approximately 2–15 °dGH). This is not a blackwater specialist, however — its wide basin distribution takes in a variety of river types, and the moderate hardness upper end of its range reflects the more mineralised white-water rivers of the Amazon system.
Feeding
Cetopsis coecutiens is an unambiguous carnivore. In the wild it forages on the bottom and in the water column at night, taking invertebrates, fish flesh and other soft animal matter; its sharp recurved dentition allows it to rasp chunks of flesh from larger prey, behaviour documented in the wild and confirmed in aquarium observations. It is not a detritivore or omnivore — plant material plays essentially no role in its diet.
In the aquarium the species accepts meaty fresh and frozen foods: prawns, mussel, cockle, lancefish (sand eels) and earthworms are all recorded as accepted by Seriously Fish, and some individuals adjust to high-quality dried carnivore foods over time. Because it is strongly nocturnal, food should be offered after lights-out to ensure it reaches the catfish rather than being intercepted by diurnal tankmates.
Mating
No reproductive behaviour has been documented for Cetopsis coecutiens in the wild or in captivity, and the biology of mating in Cetopsidae is poorly known across the family. The species shows no obvious external sexual dimorphism reported in the literature, and no field accounts of courtship or territorial behaviour have been published.
Given the family's placement within Siluriformes and the general pattern in similar scaleless, benthic catfishes, a substrate-associated spawning seems plausible, but this has not been confirmed for any Cetopsis species and should not be assumed. Data are simply sparse.
Breeding
Breeding Cetopsis coecutiens in captivity has not been achieved, and there are no reliable accounts of the species reproducing in an aquarium setting. The basic reproductive biology — spawning triggers, egg-care mode, fry diet and development — remains undescribed in the scientific literature.
Keepers interested in this species should not expect to breed it and should source fish responsibly from the trade. Until the family Cetopsidae receives more targeted reproductive study, any statements about egg-scattering, nest-guarding or parental care in this species would be speculation. The honest position is that breeding remains unknown.
In the aquarium
Cetopsis coecutiens grows to 10.5 in and should be housed in a suitably large aquarium — a tank of at least 47 in in length is a sensible minimum for an adult, and larger is better given its active nocturnal foraging. The size trap is real: fish sold as juveniles may be only a few centimetres long, but this species is not a dwarf catfish. Provide a soft or fine sandy substrate, dim lighting or a cave retreat for daytime cover, and gentle to moderate water flow replicating the South American lowland rivers it comes from. Water parameters should sit within the species' documented range: 72–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.4, soft to moderately hard (2–15 °dGH).
Two care points are non-negotiable. First, the skin is entirely naked with no scales and no bony plates — this makes Cetopsis coecutiens sensitive to copper-based medications and some other chemical treatments, in the same way as loaches, puffers and other scaleless catfish. Dose any medication conservatively, follow manufacturer half-dose guidance for scaleless fish, and avoid long copper exposure. Second, this species carries a powerful, flesh-rasping bite. Unlike most catfishes whose risk comes from locking fin spines, the danger here is the jaws — keep fingers well away during maintenance and never reach into the tank barehanded when the catfish is active. There is no venom, but a bite from a large specimen can draw blood.
Cetopsis coecutiens is primarily nocturnal; it will rarely be visible during the day. In a species-appropriate setup — alone or with robust, similarly sized tankmates — it can be a rewarding speciality fish for experienced keepers who accept a large, strongly carnivorous, mostly invisible catfish. Small fish will be eaten.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Cetopsis coecutiens as Least Concern, assessed in October 2020. Its wide distribution across three large South American river basins — the Amazon, the Tocantins and the Orinoco — means that it is not considered at risk at a range-wide scale, though localised threats from deforestation, sedimentation and river modification affect the broader fauna of these systems.
The species enters the ornamental fish trade in small numbers but is not a common aquarium fish. Most specimens in the trade are wild-caught, as no captive breeding programme is known. Responsible sourcing and accurate dealer identification (whale catfishes are sometimes confused with other naked catfishes) benefit both the keeper and the species.
