Taxonomy & naming
Lepthoplosternum stellatum was described by Reis & Kaefer in 2005. It belongs to the family Callichthyidae, the armored catfishes, within the subfamily Callichthyinae alongside Hoplosternum, Megalechis and Dianema — the larger-bodied, bubble-nesting armored cats, as distinct from the small, dorsal-arched Corydoras and its relatives. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Lepthoplosternum as the valid genus for this species; older literature on Callichthyinae sometimes lumped these fish under a broader Hoplosternum before the genus was split.
The genus name Lepthoplosternum combines Greek roots pointing to a slender, plated body — a "slender-plated catfish" — distinguishing it from the more heavy-set Hoplosternum. The species epithet stellatum is Latin for "studded with stars", describing the small, dark, roundish dots scattered across the body, a pattern that gives the fish its scientific name and is a useful field mark.
Morphology
Like all callichthyids, Lepthoplosternum stellatum has no true scales; instead its flanks are covered by two overlapping rows of bony dermal plates that run the length of the body, giving it real armor rather than the naked skin of many other catfish families. The body carries a scattering of small, dark, roundish spots — the "stars" of its name — over a pale ground colour, and it has the barbels and downturned mouth typical of a benthic, bottom-foraging catfish.
This is a genuinely small species: maximum recorded size is only about 2 in standard length, based on the type material and museum specimens (a reference specimen was measured at 1.5 in SL). That makes it one of the smallest catfishes covered here, and it should stay that size in the aquarium — there is no size-trap warning to give for this species, unlike most of its family. As in other scaleless, plated catfish, the skin lacks true scales and the fish should be treated as medication-sensitive, with copper-based and other treatments dosed conservatively.
Habitat
The species is known from its type locality, Igarapé Repartimento, a tributary stream of Lago Tefé in the Brazilian Amazon (Amazonas state), and appears to be a range-restricted local endemic rather than a widely distributed river fish. It lives in a permanently flowing, well-oxygenated stream — a habitat distinct from the still, hypoxic swamps and flooded pools that many other armored callichthyids (like Hoplosternum and Megalechis) tolerate.
Specific temperature, pH and hardness figures were not captured for this species in the sources reviewed; as an Amazon-basin stream fish it can be kept under the soft, warm, tropical conditions typical of the region, but exact figures should be treated as provisional rather than measured. Despite living in flowing, well-oxygenated water, Lepthoplosternum stellatum — like other callichthyids — is an obligate air-breather, regularly rising to gulp air at the surface to supplement gill respiration; this trait persists in the aquarium and is normal behaviour, not a sign of poor water quality.
Feeding
As a benthic callichthyid, Lepthoplosternum stellatum is best understood as a nocturnal bottom omnivore, foraging over the streambed for small invertebrates and detritus rather than hunting in open water. Specific dietary data was not captured for this species, but the family's feeding style is well established and there is no reason to expect this species departs from it.
In the aquarium it should take sinking pellets, small frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia) and other prepared foods readily. Because it is a nocturnal forager, offering food after lights-out — or ensuring some sinks to the bottom overnight — helps it compete with more active daytime tankmates rather than going hungry in a busy community tank.
Mating
Direct observations of Lepthoplosternum stellatum's own courtship have not been documented in the sources reviewed, but breeding behaviour is well studied in its close callichthyine relatives (Hoplosternum, Megalechis), and Lepthoplosternum shares the same reproductive strategy as an armored callichthyid. Courtship in this group centres on nest-site selection rather than open-water chasing: the male selects a spot, often beneath a broad leaf or piece of floating cover, and begins blowing a raft of mucus-coated bubbles at the surface.
A drop in temperature — mimicking the onset of rains in the wild — is a known trigger for spawning activity in this group, and is worth reproducing in the aquarium with a partial water change of slightly cooler water. The female is drawn to the finished bubble-nest to deposit eggs, which the male then fertilises and tends within the raft.
Breeding
Lepthoplosternum stellatum is a bubble-nest builder, following the reproductive pattern of the armored callichthyids: the male constructs a floating raft of mucus-bound bubbles, often anchored beneath a leaf or piece of floating cover at the surface, and the eggs are deposited directly into this nest. The male then guards and tends the nest and the developing eggs, defending the area and maintaining the bubble raft until the fry hatch and become free-swimming — one of the few genuine cases of paternal care among catfishes covered in this atlas.
This makes Lepthoplosternum stellatum one of the more realistically home-breedable catfish species here, in contrast to families that are essentially never bred outside commercial hormone-induced spawning. A well-conditioned pair in a quiet, densely planted or leaf-littered tank with floating cover and a modest temperature drop to simulate seasonal rains stands a reasonable chance of spawning; the male's guarding behaviour should be respected by leaving him with the nest rather than removing eggs.
In the aquarium
At a maximum of roughly 2 in SL, Lepthoplosternum stellatum is genuinely small for an armored catfish and suits modest tanks — there is no size trap here, but it should still be kept in a group given its social, benthic habits. Provide fine, soft substrate that will not abrade its barbels, gentle to moderate flow reflecting its native stream habitat, and some leaf litter or floating plants, both for cover and as a potential spawning site.
As a scaleless, plated catfish it is medication-sensitive; dose copper-based treatments and other medications conservatively. It is an obligate air-breather, so a tank with easy access to the surface (avoid a tightly sealed lid with no airspace) supports its natural gulping behaviour. It does not carry the aggressive locking spines or size concerns of larger callichthyids, but like other armored catfish it should still be lifted in a container rather than netted, since its bony plates and small fin spines can snag in mesh. Being nocturnal, it appreciates shaded cover during the day and is most active after lights-out.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Lepthoplosternum stellatum as Least Concern, based on a 2018 assessment. This LC rating should be read alongside the species' apparent restriction to a single known locality — Igarapé Repartimento, a tributary of Lago Tefé in the Brazilian Amazon — which makes it a poorly surveyed, narrow-range fish rather than a demonstrably widespread one.
There is no evidence in the sources reviewed of active trade pressure or habitat threats specific to this species; its conservation picture is best described as data-limited, tied to the health of a single small Amazonian stream system rather than to broad basin-wide pressures documented for larger, more heavily fished catfishes.
