Taxonomy & naming
Clarias batu was described by Kelvin K. P. Lim and Heok Hee Ng in 1999 in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology, from material collected on Tioman Island in Peninsular Malaysia. It sits in the family Clariidae, the airbreathing catfishes, within the genus Clarias — a large Old World genus of roughly 60 species spanning Africa and Asia, most of them equipped with an air-breathing labyrinth organ that lets them tolerate poor-oxygen water and even move overland. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Clarias batu as a valid species.
Lim & Ng distinguished C. batu from the superficially similar Clarias nieuhofii, a wide-ranging Southeast Asian species, chiefly by its dorsal and anal fins being clearly separated from the caudal fin rather than confluent with it, along with differences in fin-ray counts. The species epithet batu is Malay for "rock" or "stone", a fitting name for a fish restricted to the rocky, boulder-strewn torrent streams of its home island.
Morphology
Clarias batu has the classic walking-catfish build shared across the genus: an elongated, cylindrical body, a flattened, bony head, and long-based dorsal and anal fins that run most of the length of the body but — diagnostically for this species — stop short of fusing with the caudal fin. FishBase records a high fin-ray count typical of the genus, with 67–75 dorsal soft rays and 61–70 anal soft rays, and a body depth at the anus of about 9.0–11.4% of standard length, giving a slim, torrent-adapted profile.
Maximum recorded size is 12 in standard length (FishBase) — a genuinely large fish once mature, and well beyond what most home tanks can accommodate. As in all Clarias the skin is entirely scaleless, which has direct consequences for medicating the species (see "In the aquarium"), and the pectoral fins carry a stout, serrated, lockable spine that can jab an unwary hand or snag a net.
Habitat
This species is endemic to Tioman Island, a small volcanic island off the eastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia in the South China Sea. The original description places it in torrent (fast-flowing hill) streams on the island's western and southern slopes, over substrates of rock and boulder rather than sand or mud — a habitat that sets it apart from the sluggish, often stagnant swamps and ditches favoured by many of its Clarias relatives.
Specific water chemistry data are not recorded in the sources available; PlanetCatfish notes that the genus as a whole makes no special demands on water parameters, tolerating a wide range thanks to its air-breathing organ, but as a torrent-stream specialist Clarias batu should be assumed to need clean, well-oxygenated, flowing water rather than still or degraded conditions. Its entire known range is confined to this single small island, making it exceptionally vulnerable to any localised habitat disturbance.
Feeding
Detailed dietary data specific to Clarias batu are not available in the sources consulted here. Like other members of the genus, it is presumed to be an opportunistic predator and scavenger, taking invertebrates, small fish and other animal matter from the stream bed at night — the typical Clarias feeding strategy across the family.
As with all large Clarias, any captive individual would need to be fed accordingly: substantial meaty foods (fish, prawn, large pellets), and tankmates would need to be too large to be swallowed. Given the species' near-total absence from the trade, though, this is largely theoretical rather than documented aquarium practice.
Mating
No spawning behaviour has been documented for Clarias batu in the sources available, and the species has essentially no history in the aquarium trade to draw on. Wild Clarias generally spawn in flooded margins or slow water during the rainy season, with adhesive eggs scattered over vegetation or debris and no ongoing parental care, but this pattern has not specifically been confirmed for C. batu.
Breeding
Clarias batu is not bred in the home aquarium. Large Clarias species in general are propagated, where they are propagated at all, through farm aquaculture or hormone-induced spawning at commercial scale — techniques used for food-fish Clarias species rather than for range-restricted, conservation-listed species like this one. Given its Critically Endangered status and its confinement to a single island's torrent streams, there is no aquarist-accessible breeding pathway for this species, and any conservation breeding would need to be a dedicated, institutional ex-situ programme rather than a hobbyist undertaking.
In the aquarium
Clarias batu is not a realistic aquarium fish, and it is barely present in the hobby at all. The headline reason is size: at up to 12 in standard length, this is a large, powerful catfish that outgrows anything but a very large, dedicated tank — the classic "size trap" of the genus, where an innocuous-looking juvenile becomes an animal no ordinary aquarium can house. Its Critically Endangered status and single-island endemism make it inappropriate to seek out for the trade in any case; wild collection for the aquarium hobby would only add pressure to an already precarious population.
Were it ever kept, the same genus-wide cautions that apply to all Clarias would hold: the skin is completely scaleless, so medications and copper-based treatments should be dosed conservatively, as for loaches or puffers. The pectoral spines lock rigid and are serrated, so the fish should be moved in a container rather than netted. As an accessory air-breather it needs access to the water surface and will gulp air directly, and being nocturnal it would need cover to shelter in during the day. None of this is a case for keeping the species — it is a note on the genus's general husbandry, offered with the explicit caveat that this particular fish belongs in the wild, on Tioman Island, not in a tank.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Clarias batu as Critically Endangered. The species is known only from Tioman Island, off eastern Peninsular Malaysia, giving it an extremely limited range — a single small island's torrent-stream habitat — that leaves it acutely vulnerable to any degradation of that habitat, whether from development, water extraction, pollution or sedimentation of its rocky streams.
With such a restricted distribution, the population has essentially nowhere to retreat to if its streams are disturbed. There is no meaningful aquarium trade in this species, so collection pressure is not the primary threat; the concern is squarely habitat integrity on Tioman Island itself. Any conservation response would need to focus on protecting the island's freshwater streams rather than on captive propagation, given the total absence of an established ex-situ breeding programme.
