Taxonomy & naming
Clarias camerunensis was described by the Swedish zoologist Einar Lönnberg in 1895, with a type locality on the Sanaga River in Cameroon. It belongs to the family Clariidae, the airbreathing or "walking" catfishes, and to the genus Clarias, a large Afro-Asian genus of elongate, scaleless catfishes equipped with an accessory air-breathing organ. The Catalog of Fishes treats Clarias camerunensis as the currently valid combination.
The genus name Clarias derives from a Latinised form referencing the fish's clarity or brightness in older descriptions, though it is now used purely as a formal genus label; the species epithet camerunensis simply means "of Cameroon", after the country of the type locality on the Sanaga River. As with many African Clarias, the group has a long history of taxonomic revision, and older literature or trade names may place related walking catfishes under now-obsolete genus arrangements — the valid genus for this species remains Clarias.
Morphology
Clarias camerunensis has the classic clariid body plan: a long, cylindrical, eel-like trunk, a flattened, bony head, and a long-based dorsal fin that runs almost the length of the back, mirrored by a similarly long anal fin, with no adipose fin. Four pairs of barbels around the mouth — nasal, maxillary and two mandibular pairs — give it a whiskered, sensory-rich face suited to feeling its way through murky water and hunting after dark.
The skin is entirely scaleless, smooth and mucus-covered, which is typical of the family. FishBase records a maximum size of 18.5 in total length, a size class that firmly separates this species from the small "dwarf" catfishes sometimes sold alongside it — juveniles offered in the trade are only a fraction of their adult length. Each pectoral fin carries a single, stout, sharp spine with well-developed articulations that let it be locked rigidly erect; in Clarias, unlike many other catfish families, only the pectoral fins are spined, not the dorsal. The spine is connected to venom-producing tissue and can inflict a genuinely painful sting.
Habitat
The species is native to West-Central Africa, with a broad range spanning from Ghana and Togo eastward through the Lower Guinea region — Nigeria, Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea — and into the Congo basin, including the Republic of Congo and Democratic Republic of the Congo, with records also noted from Angola, Gabon, Benin and South Sudan. It is a freshwater, bottom-dwelling (demersal) fish of rivers and associated floodplain habitats.
Recorded temperatures for the species sit around 73–82 °F, consistent with lowland tropical West-Central African rivers. As a facultative air-breather it can tolerate warm, oxygen-poor water that would stress purely gill-breathing fish, gulping air at the surface via a specialised accessory breathing organ — an adaptation typical of Clariidae that lets the genus survive in swamps, floodplain pools and other seasonally low-oxygen habitats.
Feeding
Diet shifts markedly with size. Smaller individuals feed on aquatic insect larvae — mayfly, chironomid (midge) and caddisfly larvae — picked from the substrate and vegetation. As the fish grows, its diet broadens and becomes increasingly predatory and opportunistic, taking other insects and larvae, fish remains, and plant material alongside animal prey.
In practice, an adult Clarias camerunensis is a nocturnal generalist predator: it will take any animal food small enough to swallow, including other fish, and scavenges readily. In captivity it should be offered large, meaty foods — whole fish, prawn and sinking pellets — reflecting its natural role as an opportunistic hunter rather than a delicate feeder.
Mating
Clarias camerunensis reaches the size and biology of a farm and pond fish across much of its range, and its reproduction in the wild is tied to seasonal cues. FishBase notes nest-building behaviour timed to the rainy season, when rising water and flooded margins provide space and cover for spawning. Courtship and pairing in large Clarias typically follow a rainy-season flood pulse rather than being triggered reliably by aquarium conditions.
Because this is a large, wide-ranging riverine species that is also farmed and fished commercially across parts of its range, most reproduction of interest to fisheries and aquaculture is achieved artificially — by hormone injection to induce spawning in ponds or hatcheries — rather than through natural pairing observed at hobbyist scale. Home aquarists essentially never see courtship or spawning in this species, both because it quickly outgrows a home tank and because reliable triggers are a pond- or hatchery-scale undertaking.
Breeding
This is a large, farm- and hormone-bred catfish, not a home-aquarium breeding project. FishBase records nest-building with the male guarding the eggs during the rainy season in the wild, but at the scale most aquarists can offer — a home tank — the species cannot approach the size or seasonal flood conditions it needs to spawn naturally, and no reliable home-aquarium breeding protocol exists for it.
Across Clariidae generally, large species like this one are propagated commercially via induced (hormone-injected) spawning in ponds and hatcheries for the food-fish trade, not by hobbyists. Anyone acquiring Clarias camerunensis should treat it purely as a display or grow-out fish and not expect, or attempt to engineer, breeding in a home setup.
In the aquarium
Clarias camerunensis is a genuine size-trap species: it is very often sold as an inexpensive, inch-long juvenile that looks manageable, but FishBase documents a maximum size of 18.5 in total length — a fish that will outgrow the overwhelming majority of home aquaria within a year or two of steady feeding. Prospective keepers should plan for an eventual eel-like predator pushing toward half a metre, housed in a tank on the order of 48 x 12 x 12 inches or considerably larger as it matures, with a secure, tight-fitting lid — air-breathing Clarias are strong, persistent escape artists and will exploit any gap.
Water should be kept close to neutral (around pH 7) at roughly 79 °F, with a small air gap left above the water surface so the fish can reach atmospheric air via its accessory breathing organ; it is a facultative air-breather and will suffer if denied surface access. The skin is completely scaleless, so — as with loaches, puffers and true eels — medications and copper-based treatments should be dosed conservatively, often at half the labelled rate, to avoid harming the fish. Each pectoral fin bears a stout, sharp, lockable spine linked to venom-producing tissue that can deliver a genuinely painful sting; the fish should always be moved in a container rather than a net, both to protect the keeper's hands and to avoid the spines tangling in mesh. It is a solitary-to-loosely-social, primarily nocturnal ambush predator that will eat any tankmate small enough to swallow, so companions must be too large to fit in its mouth. Provide submerged structure — pipes, rockwork or driftwood caves — for daytime cover. Given its size and predatory nature, Clarias camerunensis suits public aquaria, large species-only systems, or dedicated oversized setups far more than a typical community tank, and like other Clarias it should never be released into local waterways if it outgrows its keeper's tank, since the genus is a well-documented invasive risk elsewhere in the world.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Clarias camerunensis as Least Concern. It is a widespread species across West-Central Africa — recorded from Ghana and Togo through Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, Benin and South Sudan — which supports a favourable overall status despite the lack of fine-grained population data in any single part of its range.
As a broadly distributed river and floodplain species that is also fished and farmed for food across much of West and Central Africa, its long-term outlook is tied more to regional habitat pressures — damming, siltation and wetland conversion — than to any single localised threat. Aquarium specimens are generally a byproduct of the wider food-fish trade rather than a targeted ornamental fishery.
