Taxonomy & naming
Clarias ebriensis was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1920. It belongs to the family Clariidae, the airbreathing or walking catfishes, and to the genus Clarias, a large Old World group of more than 60 species spread across Africa and Asia. The Catalog of Fishes treats Clarias ebriensis as a valid species within this genus.
The species epithet ebriensis references the Ebrié Lagoon (also spelled "Ébrié"), the extensive coastal lagoon system around Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, from which the species was originally described — the type locality anchors the name directly to that West African lagoon and estuary system. As with much of Clariidae, older literature and regional checklists have at times placed West African Clarias under revised or disputed combinations; this account keeps the currently accepted genus, Clarias.
Morphology
Clarias ebriensis has the classic clariid silhouette: an elongated, cylindrical body, a flattened, bony head, and a long-based dorsal fin that runs much of the length of the back, paired with a similarly long anal fin. Four pairs of long, slender barbels around the mouth help it locate prey by touch and smell in murky, low-visibility water. The skin is entirely scaleless.
FishBase records a maximum size of about 12.5 in total length and roughly 240 g in weight, and field reports describe animals up to 12–23.5 in TL in natural habitat — this is an adult-sized catfish, not a fish that stays small, and buyers of juveniles should plan tank space accordingly. As in all Clarias, a paired suprabranchial (accessory air-breathing) organ above the gills lets it gulp atmospheric air directly, an adaptation to the low-oxygen swamps and lagoon margins it inhabits. Like other members of the genus it carries stiff, sharp pectoral spines that can lock erect and are capable of jabbing a careless hand or snagging a net.
Habitat
The species is native to coastal West Africa, recorded from the Ebrié Lagoon system and associated waters of Côte d'Ivoire, with the wider range extending into Nigeria and Cameroon. It inhabits brackish estuaries, mangrove-fringed swamps and river mouths — transitional habitats where fresh water and tidal seawater mix and dissolved oxygen is often low, especially in still, vegetated margins.
Its air-breathing physiology is a direct response to that environment: when water oxygen drops, as it routinely does in stagnant lagoon and swamp margins, Clarias ebriensis simply surfaces and gulps air rather than relying on gills alone. This also lets it survive in shallow, sluggish or seasonally poor-quality water that would be lethal to a purely gill-breathing fish.
Feeding
Clarias ebriensis is a predatory catfish in the mould of its genus — a nocturnal opportunist that hunts by scent and touch using its barbels, taking any fish or invertebrate small enough to swallow. Diet in the wild is expected to include small fish, aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans and other benthic prey encountered while foraging along the lagoon and estuary bottom after dark.
In captivity a fish of this genus and size takes large meaty foods readily — whole or chopped fish, prawn, and large sinking pellets — and will not hesitate to eat any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth. Tankmates must be chosen to be too large to swallow, not simply "peaceful".
Mating
Detailed wild spawning behaviour specific to Clarias ebriensis is not well documented in the readily available literature; data is sparse for this particular species. Clariids in general are seasonal spawners tied to rainy-season flooding, when rising, oxygen-richer water and flooded vegetation trigger reproduction; some accounts describe males defending shallow nesting territories and pairs spawning over plant material, a pattern reported for this species by aquarium-trade sources though not confirmed in the primary scientific literature.
As with the rest of the genus, this species is not a fish that pairs up and spawns in a home aquarium. Its adult size, its ecology, and the commercial farming pattern seen across Clarias make induced, hormone-driven spawning at pond or hatchery scale the realistic route to reproduction, not aquarium courtship.
Breeding
Clarias ebriensis is not a species that gets bred in home aquaria. Across the genus, the walking catfishes that reach commercial size — including close relatives like the African sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus — are propagated on fish farms using hormone-induced spawning (typically pituitary extract or synthetic analogues), with eggs stripped and fertilised artificially and fry raised in ponds or tanks at scale. There is no realistic hobbyist pathway to spawning this fish behind glass: it grows too large, needs pond-scale space, and its reproduction is managed industrially where it is farmed at all.
Parental care in the wild, where reported for the genus, can include some nest-guarding by the male around the spawning site, but this is not relevant to captive husbandry for a fish that essentially is not kept through a breeding cycle in an aquarium setting.
In the aquarium
Clarias ebriensis is a poor fit for the overwhelming majority of home aquaria and is best approached with that stated plainly up front: it is routinely sold as an innocuous few-centimetre juvenile but grows to roughly 12.5 in (reports of up to 23.5 in TL exist), a size that demands a very large, heavily filtered tank or, more realistically, an outdoor pond — most standard home aquaria simply cannot house an adult. Anyone buying a small specimen should have an end-game plan for a six-foot-plus tank or a pond before committing.
Because it is scaleless, like loaches, puffers and true eels, it is more sensitive to copper-based medications and many standard treatments than scaled fish — dose conservatively, often at half strength, and treat only when necessary. Its pectoral spines lock rigid and are sharp enough to injure a hand or snag badly in a net, so it should be moved in a container rather than netted. As an air-breather it needs access to the surface at all times and benefits from a lid, since Clarias are strong, determined jumpers and "walkers" capable of leaving the water via wet ground. It is nocturnal and predatory: keep only tankmates too large to be swallowed, provide dense cover or a cave for daytime hiding, and never treat it as a community fish. Clarias species are also documented invasive pests where released outside their native range — this fish should never be released into open waters.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Clarias ebriensis as Least Concern. It occupies a defined West African coastal range centred on the Ebrié Lagoon system and neighbouring estuaries in Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria and Cameroon, and is not currently considered at elevated risk of extinction.
As with many coastal lagoon and mangrove species in the region, the long-term pressures worth watching are habitat-level rather than population-specific: mangrove clearance, coastal development, and water-quality decline in lagoon and estuarine systems along the West African coast.
