Taxonomy & naming
Clarias engelseni was described by the Norwegian ichthyologist Johnsen in 1926, originally placed in the genus Allabenchelys as Allabenchelys engelseni before later authors folded it into the large walking-catfish genus Clarias. It belongs to the family Clariidae, the airbreathing or walking catfishes of Africa and Asia, and its type locality lies in Sudan, in the Nile system.
The genus name Clarias derives from the Greek chlaros, "lively" or "vigorous", a nod to the family's ability to survive out of water and wriggle across land using its stiff pectoral spines. The species epithet engelseni honours Harald Engelsen (1883–1954), a Norwegian tropical-disease researcher with the Merchant Services Division of the Norwegian Red Cross, who collected the type specimen. As with much of Siluriformes, Clariidae has seen taxonomic reshuffling since 1926; the Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the currently accepted combination, which keeps this species in Clarias.
Morphology
Clarias engelseni shows the unmistakable walking-catfish body plan: an elongated, cylindrical trunk, a flattened, bony head, and a long-based dorsal fin running most of the length of the back, mirrored by a similarly long anal fin, with the caudal fin often continuous or nearly so with both. Four pairs of barbels ring the mouth, used to feel out food in murky or low-visibility water.
Like all Clarias it is naked-skinned — there are no scales, only a mucus-covered skin — which matters directly for medication dosing (see "In the aquarium"). It carries a stiff, sharp pectoral spine on each side that can lock in place; these spines aid the fish's famous overland "walking" and can jab an unwary hand. Precise maximum length for C. engelseni is not well documented in the available literature, but the genus Clarias runs from modestly sized species to some that exceed half a metre, so this is a species to size cautiously rather than assume small.
Habitat
The species is recorded from Sudan, within the Nile and broader Nilo-Sudanic river basin drainages of northeastern Africa — a region of large, seasonally fluctuating rivers, floodplains and associated wetlands. Detailed water-chemistry data specific to C. engelseni is not available in the sources consulted; the entry should be read as data sparse on precise pH, hardness and temperature ranges.
As with other Clariidae of the region, the species almost certainly tolerates warm, often oxygen-poor water, an adaptation underscored by the family's defining trait: a suprabranchial air-breathing organ that lets these catfish gulp atmospheric air and survive in stagnant pools, drying floodplains, and other conditions that would suffocate a purely gill-breathing fish.
Feeding

Across the genus, commercially relevant Clarias species are propagated at scale using hormone-induced spawning in aquaculture facilities, not through natural pairing in a tank — a fish that outgrows almost all home systems and needs induced spawning to reproduce reliably is simply not a realistic home-breeding project.
No parental-care behaviour specific to this species is documented in the available sources. Prospective keepers should not expect to breed this fish at home and should assume any breeding it undergoes happens under controlled hatchery conditions, if at all.
In the aquarium
Clarias engelseni is not a fish to buy on impulse. It belongs to a genus notorious for the "size trap": juveniles sold small in the trade can grow into large, heavy-bodied catfish that a typical home aquarium cannot house long-term, and precise adult-size data for this species is not well documented — a strong reason to assume the worst and plan for a very large system, a pond, or to avoid the species outright rather than gamble on staying small.
Because it is scaleless, like all Clariidae, it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and many standard treatments — dose conservatively. It carries a locking pectoral spine capable of jabbing the keeper and snagging in a net, so it should be moved in a container rather than netted. As an air-breather it needs access to the surface and will periodically gulp air; a secure, heavy lid is essential, since Clarias are strong, determined escape artists capable of wriggling across wet floors. It is also worth noting that the genus Clarias is a well-documented invasive group in regions outside its native range — this fish should never be released into local waterways.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Clarias engelseni as Data Deficient, reflecting how little targeted survey work exists for this Nile-basin species; there is not enough information to judge its population trend or extinction risk with confidence.
It is known from Sudan within the Nile and Nilo-Sudanic river system, a region under pressure from water abstraction, damming, and agricultural development, but without dedicated assessment data it is not possible to say how these pressures specifically affect C. engelseni. The species is effectively absent from aquarium and hobby literature, suggesting little to no aquarium trade demand and correspondingly little collection pressure from that source.
