Taxonomy & naming
Clarias gracilentus was described by Heok Hee Ng, Ngo Sy Van Hong and Tu Chan Tu in 2011, part of a wave of species-level splits that untangled Southeast Asia's walking catfishes from the older, broadly applied name Clarias batrachus. It belongs to the family Clariidae, the airbreathing and walking catfishes, within the genus Clarias, which spans dozens of species across Africa and Asia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Clarias gracilentus as a valid, currently recognised species.
The genus name Clarias derives from the Greek chlaros, roughly "lively" or "vigorous", an old allusion to the fish's tenacity out of water. The species epithet gracilentus is Latin for "slender" or "thin", describing the elongate body form that separates this species from its closest Phu Quoc relative, C. nieuhofii — in C. gracilentus the dorsal and anal fins are not fully confluent with the caudal fin, a diagnostic difference from that superficially similar species.
Morphology
Clarias gracilentus has the classic Clariidae body plan: an elongate, cylindrical, scaleless body, a flattened bony head, four pairs of barbels around the mouth, and long-based dorsal and anal fins that run most of the length of the body without fully joining the caudal fin. The dorsal fin occupies roughly 71–78% of standard length and the anal fin around 57–66%, supported by a high ray count (84–103 dorsal rays, 74–92 anal rays over about 80–84 vertebrae) typical of the genus.
Size data from type and voucher specimens run from about 6 in to 12.5 in standard length (roughly 6–12.5 in SL), with the holotype measuring 7.5 in SL (about 7.5 in). Like all Clarias it has a functional accessory air-breathing organ (a paired, arborescent structure derived from the gill arches) that lets it gulp atmospheric air, and stout, serrated pectoral spines that lock rigid and, together with side-to-side body flexion, let the fish "walk" overland.
Habitat
The species is known from small forest springs and swamps in the northern part of Phu Quoc National Park on Phu Quoc Island (Kien Giang Province, Vietnam) — specifically the Rach Tram and Rach Vem drainages — and from the Kampot River drainage across the border in Cambodia. These are clear, cool, brown-tinted forest streams, typically 75–81 °F, distinctly acidic (pH roughly 4.5–5.5) and well oxygenated for a blackwater-type habitat.
During the dry season the fish retreats into small holes among dead tree roots as pools shrink, and its air-breathing organ and walking ability let it move between isolated water bodies rather than being stranded — a survival strategy shared across the walking catfishes of seasonal Southeast Asian wetlands.
Feeding
Clarias gracilentus has not been the subject of a dedicated diet study, but its biology follows the well-documented pattern of the genus: a nocturnal piscivore and opportunistic predator with a wide, un-toothed-but-gripping mouth capable of swallowing prey close to its own girth. Related Clarias take fish, aquatic insects, crustaceans, molluscs and organic debris, foraging mostly after dark by scent and touch using the barbels.
In practice this means any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth is at risk. Keepers of large Clarias offer whole fish, prawn, mussel and chunky pellets, and should expect the fish to consume anything it can overpower — feeding behaviour that reinforces why tankmates must be chosen purely on the basis of being too large to swallow.
Mating
No courtship or spawning account specific to Clarias gracilentus has been documented; data on this species is sparse, reflecting its narrow range and recent description. Across the genus, Clarias are oviparous, seasonal spawners that pair up and scatter or deposit eggs over submerged vegetation and debris during the rainy season, when rising water triggers reproductive activity — but for large, commercially significant Clarias, natural pairing in captivity is rarely observed because spawning is instead induced artificially at farm scale (see Breeding).
Breeding
Clarias gracilentus is a large, size-trap catfish in a genus whose bigger members are propagated commercially, not in home aquaria. Large Clarias species are routinely bred on fish farms using hormone-induced spawning (typically pituitary extract or synthetic hormone injection to trigger ovulation), followed by stripping and artificial fertilisation — a scale of intervention and a volume of broodstock and rearing space that has no home-aquarium equivalent. There is no record of C. gracilentus being spawned by hobbyists, and its adult size alone (approaching a third of a metre) makes unintentional home breeding essentially impossible. Anyone acquiring this fish should treat it as a non-breeding aquarium subject.
In the aquarium
This is a size-trap fish: small juveniles sold in the trade will grow toward 30+ cm SL, and the great majority of home aquaria simply cannot house an adult Clarias long-term — this needs to be stated plainly before acquisition, not discovered after the fact. Anyone taking one on should plan for a very large, heavily filtered tank (or an outdoor pond in a suitable climate) with a tight, weighted lid, since air-breathing Clarias are notorious escape artists that use their walking ability to leave uncovered tanks, sometimes overland.
Because it is scaleless, it is medication-sensitive: dose copper-based treatments and many standard medications conservatively, often at reduced strength, as with loaches, puffers and eels. Its pectoral spines lock rigid and are stiff and serrated enough to snag a net and jab the handler, so move the fish in a container rather than netting it. Provide caves or dark refuge, since it is nocturnal and secretive by day, and rely on the labyrinth organ's need for air access rather than gill oxygenation alone — keep an air gap and avoid a fully sealed lid design that blocks surface access. Given the genus's well-documented invasive record elsewhere in the world, this fish must never be released into local waterways.
Conservation
Clarias gracilentus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated. It is a narrow-range species restricted to a small part of Phu Quoc Island and the adjoining Cambodian mainland, described only in 2011, and no population assessment has been published.
Its forest-spring and swamp habitat on Phu Quoc is subject to the same pressures facing the island generally — tourism development, land conversion and drainage of wetland forest — which would be worth monitoring given the species' restricted distribution, though no formal threat assessment yet exists to confirm impact.
