Taxonomy & naming
Clarias jaensis was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1909, with the type locality given as the Ja River at Bitye in southern Cameroon — the river that supplies the species name. It belongs to the family Clariidae, the airbreathing or walking catfishes, in the large genus Clarias, and sits within the subgenus Platycephaloides, a group of West-Central African Clarias with long, broad, dorsally pointed heads.
The species has accumulated synonyms over the twentieth century, including Clarias cameronensis and Clarias hollyi, both now folded into C. jaensis under the Catalog of Fishes. No other genus has ever been proposed for it; it has always sat in Clarias, a genus whose species limits within Platycephaloides have been repeatedly revised as more West-Central African river systems were surveyed.
Morphology
Clarias jaensis reaches at least 15.5–19 in total length, a large-bodied catfish by any home-aquarium standard. It shows the classic clariid shape: an elongated, cylindrical body, a long, broad head that comes to a point dorsally, and an air-breathing labyrinth organ tucked above the gills that lets it survive in poorly oxygenated water and even move briefly overland. Colouring is a uniform to marbled brown, without the bold spotting seen in some other catfish groups.
Like all Clariidae it is scaleless, with naked, mucus-covered skin — a trait that matters directly for aquarium medication (see "In the aquarium"). It carries a stiff, serrated, lockable pectoral spine on each side, typical of the family, along with long dorsal and anal fin bases running much of the body length. FishBase records dorsal fin counts of 70–86 rays, anal fin counts of 54–71 rays, and 58–65 vertebrae — high counts consistent with the elongated Clarias body plan.
Habitat
This species is native to river systems of southeastern Nigeria, southern Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of Congo, including the Cross River, the Sanaga, Nyong, Lobe and Kribi drainages of Cameroon, the Mbini/Woleu, Komo and Ogowe systems of Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, and the middle Congo and Ja/Dja/Sangha systems of the Republic of Congo. It is a freshwater, demersal river fish, living on or near the bottom of these Central West African drainages.
Reported water conditions from the aquarium literature give a temperature range of 73–82 °F and pH 6.5–7.2, a mild, near-neutral tropical river profile rather than a strongly acidic blackwater environment. Precise habitat details — substrate preference, flow, vegetation — are not well documented in the available sources; data is sparse beyond these basics.
Feeding
Clarias jaensis is a large, nocturnal predator in the mould of its genus: an opportunistic piscivore that will eat any fish or invertebrate small enough to swallow whole. Specific dietary studies for this species are not available in the sources consulted, but the genus-wide pattern for Clarias is well established — it hunts by scent and touch using its barbels after dark, taking fish, crustaceans, insects and other aquatic animals.
In captivity a fish of this kind takes large meaty foods readily: whole fish, prawn, and sinking pellets or carnivore-formulated foods sized for its mouth. Any tankmate must be too large for it to swallow, since its feeding behaviour does not distinguish tankmates from prey once they fit in its mouth.
Mating
No wild courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Clarias jaensis in the sources reviewed. Across the genus Clarias, spawning in the wild is generally tied to seasonal flooding, with adults moving into flooded margins or shallow water to release eggs, but specific pairing or courtship behaviour for this species is not recorded.
Breeding
As with other large Clarias species, Clarias jaensis is not bred in the home aquarium. Commercially important walking catfishes in this genus are propagated at scale by hormone-induced spawning in aquaculture facilities — injecting mature broodstock with pituitary extract or synthetic hormones to trigger egg release, which is then followed by artificial fertilisation and pond or tank rearing of the fry. There is no record of this species being spawned by hobbyists, and its adult size alone makes home breeding impractical: a fish reaching 15.5–19 in needs pond-scale space long before it could be conditioned and paired in a typical tank.
In the aquarium
The single most important fact for a prospective keeper is size: Clarias jaensis reaches 15.5–19 in total length. Small individuals sold as juveniles will not stay juvenile-sized, and almost no home aquarium is large enough to house an adult of this species long-term — it belongs in a large, dedicated tank, a pond, or a public-aquarium setting, not a standard community or even most oversized home tanks.
Because it is scaleless, it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and to some other treatments; dose conservatively, often at half strength, and monitor closely. It carries a stiff, serrated, locking pectoral spine on each side that readily snags a net and can jab the handler, so it is safer to move in a container than to net directly. As an air-breather it needs regular access to the surface and will gulp air even in well-oxygenated water; provide dim lighting and cover, since it is most active at night. Like other Clarias it is a capable escape artist and can survive out of water for periods, so a secure, well-fitted lid is essential — and as with all Clarias, it should never be released into local waterways, since the genus includes some of the world's most damaging invasive freshwater fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Clarias jaensis as Least Concern. It is distributed across a broad span of river systems in southeastern Nigeria, southern Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of Congo, and does not currently face a recognised range-wide threat.
As with many wide-ranging Central West African river catfish, localised pressures such as habitat degradation, pollution and fishing within specific drainages are plausible but not documented in detail in the sources reviewed; data on population trends specific to this species is sparse.
