Taxonomy & naming
Clarias laeviceps was described by the American ichthyologist Theodore Gill in 1862. It belongs to the family Clariidae, the airbreathing or walking catfishes, and to the genus Clarias, a large Old World genus of more than 60 species spread across Africa and Asia. The Catalog of Fishes treats Clarias laeviceps as the valid name; a described subspecies, C. laeviceps dialonensis, is smaller-bodied (to about 10 in TL) and restricted to part of the range.
Clarias is a name of classical origin long applied to these smooth-skinned, air-breathing catfishes, and laeviceps is Latin for "smooth-headed" (laevis, smooth + ceps, head), describing the unarmoured, naked skin covering the skull that is typical of the genus. As with much of Siluriformes, the family and genus limits within Clariidae have been reworked repeatedly by taxonomists; Clarias remains the valid, stable genus for this species.
Morphology
Like other Clarias, this species has the classic walking-catfish body plan: an elongate, cylindrical trunk, a flattened, bony head, long-based dorsal and anal fins that run much of the body length, and four pairs of barbels around the mouth for sensing food in murky or low-visibility water. The skin is entirely scaleless, smooth and mucus-covered rather than plated.
FishBase records a maximum size of 12.5 in total length for the nominate form (the dialonensis subspecies tops out smaller, around 10 in TL). That is a genuinely large fish for a home aquarium — not the multi-hundred-litre freak size some Clarias reach, but still well beyond what a typical community tank can accommodate long-term. As in all Clariidae, a stiff, serrated, lockable spine sits at the leading edge of each pectoral fin; these can jab or snag a net and should be respected when handling the fish.
Habitat
Clarias laeviceps is native to coastal river drainages of West Africa, documented from the St. John River in Liberia eastward to the Volta system in Ghana, and reaching into the upper Niger drainage in Guinea. It occupies freshwater river habitat in this tropical belt, typically in slower, vegetated stretches, floodplain pools and backwaters where oxygen levels can fall — exactly the conditions its air-breathing organ is built for.
Specific temperature and pH data for this species were not found in the sources consulted; as a tropical West African river fish it should be kept warm, but exact figures are data-sparse and are not asserted here.
Feeding
Detailed dietary data for Clarias laeviceps itself is sparse, but the genus is uniformly opportunistic. Close congeners such as C. gariepinus and C. batrachus take worms, insects and their larvae, small shrimps and other invertebrates, plus decaying organic matter — an omnivorous, largely nocturnal predator that eats whatever it can find and swallow rather than specialising.
In the aquarium a fish of this build should be treated as a predator: it will take pellets, frozen and meaty foods readily, but any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth is at risk. Feed accordingly and choose companions that are simply too large to be eaten.
Mating
No aquarium spawning account for Clarias laeviceps specifically was found in the sources consulted. In related Clarias species, spawning is a pair or small-group event triggered by rains and rising water, with adults moving into flooded margins and shallow, vegetated water to release eggs and milt over plant roots and grassy nest sites roughly 12 in across — there is no elaborate courtship display recorded for the genus, and no parental pairing beyond the spawning act itself.
Breeding
This is a large, farm-relevant genus, and C. laeviceps follows the pattern: where Clarias species are propagated at all, it is almost always for food-fish aquaculture using hormone-induced spawning at hatchery scale, not spontaneous breeding in a home tank. No hobby breeding reports for C. laeviceps were found. Congeners that do spawn naturally scatter and attach their eggs to submerged roots and vegetation in a shallow nest depression, with no ongoing parental care once eggs are laid — but for this species specifically, breeding is essentially not something the home aquarist should expect to achieve or attempt.
In the aquarium
Clarias laeviceps grows to a documented 12.5 in total length — a fish that outgrows the great majority of home aquaria and needs a large, secure, tightly lidded tank if kept at all; this is not a species to buy as an appealing small juvenile without a long-term plan for housing it at full size. Like all Clariidae it is an obligate air-gulper and needs regular access to the surface, so water level and tank lid design matter as much as filtration.
The skin is completely scaleless, so medicate conservatively — many treatments, and copper in particular, should be dosed at reduced strength compared with scaled fish. Handle it with care: the locking, serrated pectoral spines snag nets readily and can jab the keeper, so moving the fish in a container rather than a net is the safer approach. It is a capable nocturnal predator and will eat any tankmate small enough to swallow, so companions must be chosen on size alone. Clarias species are also notorious for overland movement and have established invasive populations well outside their native range elsewhere in the world; never release this fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Clarias laeviceps as Vulnerable, evaluated in 2019 under criterion B2ab(i,ii,iii) on the basis of a small estimated area of occupancy (77–311 mi²) and continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat. It is endemic to a modest span of West African coastal rivers, from Liberia's St. John River to Ghana's Volta system and the upper Niger in Guinea.
The main pressures identified are deforestation and agricultural pollution across its river catchments, which degrade water quality and habitat rather than removing the species through direct exploitation. As a small-range endemic with a status one step from Endangered, it is a species whose long-term security depends on the health of its specific West African rivers rather than any single, easily addressed threat.
