Kryptopterus schilbeides is a small, slender glass catfish from Southeast Asian rivers and floodplains, reaching only about 4.5 in total length — modest by the standards of the genus's giant relatives, but still a fish that needs a real shoal and a settled tank rather than the tiny bowl beginners sometimes picture for "glass fish." Like its better-known cousins it belongs to the family Siluridae, the Old World sheatfishes, and shares their scaleless skin, finless-looking dorsal-less profile and a body built to hang motionless in midwater current.

Taxonomy & naming

Kryptopterus schilbeides was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1858, originally as Hemisilurus schilbeides, and was later moved into Kryptopterus as taxonomists reorganised the Siluridae. It belongs to the family Siluridae, the Old World sheatfishes, which also contains the true glass catfishes (Kryptopterus), the tapertail catfishes (Ompok) and the giant Wallago and Silurus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid combination Kryptopterus schilbeides.

The species epithet schilbeides is built from the family name Schilbe (Schilbeidae, the African butter catfishes) plus the Neo-Latin suffix '-oides', meaning 'resembling' — the describer thought this slender, silvery Asian species looked like a schilbeid, even though the two families are not close relatives. Genetic work on Kryptopterus recognises roughly six species groups within the genus; K. schilbeides falls among the small-to-moderate, fluviatile (river-dwelling) Southeast Asian species, in the 3–12 in standard-length range rather than among the genus's much larger species.

Morphology

Like other true glass catfish, Kryptopterus schilbeides has a laterally compressed, almost transparent body with no dorsal fin at all — a hallmark of the genus that makes it instantly recognisable next to most other catfish. A narrow pink or pale mid-lateral stripe runs along the flank, and the internal skeleton and swim bladder are often visible through the flesh in good light. The anal fin is long, running most of the length of the underside, and the tail is forked.

Maximum recorded size is about 4.5 in total length, making this one of the smaller members of the genus. As in all catfishes the skin is scaleless, and here it is also nearly see-through, which leaves the fish with essentially no armour and very little tolerance for rough handling or harsh water chemistry — a soft touch is needed at every stage of care.

Habitat

Kryptopterus schilbeides is native to Southeast Asia, recorded from the Mekong basin through to Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. It lives in rivers, canals, ditches and swamps, and undertakes a seasonal movement into flooded forest habitat during the wet season before returning to the main river channels between roughly November and March as waters recede.

This is a warm, lowland tropical river fish, not a blackwater specialist; specific pH and hardness data are sparse in the available sources, so aquarists should default to the stable, moderate, well-oxygenated river conditions typical of Mekong and Sundaic lowland habitats rather than assuming soft, acidic blackwater.

Feeding

In the wild this is a carnivorous, benthopelagic micro-predator, taking small fishes, prawns and insect larvae from the water column and near the bottom. Like other Kryptopterus it is a midwater hunter rather than a bottom scavenger, holding position in a shoal in open water and darting out at passing prey.

In the aquarium it should be offered small live or frozen foods — bloodworm, daphnia and small crustaceans — and will generally accept fine dry foods once well settled. It is a shy feeder that is easily out-competed by bolder tankmates, so food is best distributed so every fish in the shoal gets a share rather than relying on a single feeding point.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for this species in the wild or in the aquarium; glass catfishes of the genus Kryptopterus are not known to pair off or display in captivity. The entire trade in this species and its relatives is built on wild-caught fish, and there is no established account of how or where they spawn in nature beyond general river-dwelling habits.

Breeding

Kryptopterus schilbeides is essentially not bred in the home aquarium, and this is true of the glass catfish genus as a whole — virtually every glass catfish in the trade, this species included, is wild-caught rather than captive-raised. Larger relatives in the family Siluridae, such as Ompok and the giant Wallago, are river spawners that are mostly propagated on commercial fish farms using hormone induction rather than reproduced by hobbyists.

Be honest with prospective keepers: there is no reliable home-breeding method for this species. If it were ever conditioned and induced to spawn, the reasonable expectation based on the genus is free-spawning with no parental care, but this has not been documented, and keepers should not expect to breed it.

In the aquarium

Kryptopterus schilbeides tops out around 4.5 in total length, which is genuinely manageable compared to giant relatives in the family, but it is still a shoaling fish that needs a proper group — a minimum of six to eight individuals — to feel secure and show natural behaviour; kept alone or in twos it becomes reclusive and stressed. A tank of at least 39.5 in in length with gentle to moderate flow, subdued lighting and open swimming space in the upper-to-mid water column suits it well.

Because it is scaleless — and here also essentially transparent, with no armour at all — this species is highly sensitive to medications and especially to copper-based treatments; dose conservatively, as with loaches, puffers and eels, and prefer disease prevention through stable water quality over routine treatment. It is also sensitive to sudden water-quality swings, so frequent large water changes should be done gradually. It lacks the locking spines of many other catfish, so netting is not the hazard here that it is elsewhere in the family, but its delicate, transparent build still calls for gentle handling with a soft net or a container. Keep it with peaceful, similarly sized companions; anything boisterous will outcompete it at feeding time and stress the shoal.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Kryptopterus schilbeides as Least Concern, reflecting its wide distribution across mainland and island Southeast Asia and its continued presence in rivers, canals and floodplain habitats from the Mekong to Java and Sumatra. It also has commercial value as a food fish, marketed fresh or smoked in parts of its range.

As with many Southeast Asian floodplain fishes, the longer-term pressures are habitat-scale rather than species-specific: damming and flow regulation that disrupts the seasonal flooded-forest migration, wetland conversion, and water pollution in the heavily developed lowland river systems it depends on. The aquarium trade relies entirely on wild-collected fish, since the species is not commercially bred.
