Taxonomy & naming
Kryptopterus limpok was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1852, originally under the combination Silurus limpok, and later moved into the sheatfish genus Kryptopterus as the group was revised. It belongs to the family Siluridae, the Old World sheatfishes and glass catfishes, a family that has been repeatedly reshuffled at the genus level as species once lumped together were split apart on the basis of fin-ray counts and skeletal detail. The Catalog of Fishes treats Kryptopterus limpok as the valid combination.
The genus name Kryptopterus comes from Greek kryptos, "hidden", and pteron, "fin", a reference to the reduced or absent dorsal fin shared across the genus. The species epithet limpok is a vernacular Malay/Indonesian name for the fish, retained by Bleeker as the scientific epithet rather than translated. Because Kryptopterus is best known in the hobby for a handful of small, genuinely transparent species, K. limpok is easy to mistake for one of those on name alone; its adult size and murkier-water habits set it apart.
Morphology
This is a substantial sheatfish by Kryptopterus standards, reported to reach about 10 in standard length. The body is elongated and laterally compressed in the classic Siluridae profile, with a long-based anal fin carrying a high ray count (roughly 76 to 88 soft rays in this species) that runs for most of the fish's underside and provides the main propulsive surface, while the dorsal fin is reduced to little more than a vestige, in keeping with the genus name. A single pair of long maxillary barbels extends back past the last quarter of the anal fin, used to feel out prey and obstacles in the low-visibility water it inhabits.
Like other catfishes it is entirely scaleless, with naked, mucus-covered skin rather than the transparent glass-like flanks of its smaller relatives — larger Kryptopterus species tend to be duller and more opaque than the famous "ghost catfish" of the trade. That scaleless skin carries the same practical consequence seen across the order: increased sensitivity to copper-based and some other medications, a point that matters more in principle than in practice here given how rarely this species is actually kept.
Habitat
Kryptopterus limpok is native to tropical Asia, recorded from Thailand through the Sundaland region to Indonesia, in the lowland river systems of the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins and the Greater Sunda islands. It occupies rivers and streams with turbid, sediment-laden water rather than the clearer forest streams favoured by some of the smaller glass catfishes.
Water in these habitats is warm and on the soft-to-moderately-hard side of neutral, generally cited at pH 6.0 to 7.5 and temperatures of 68–82 °F. The suspended sediment that gives the water its characteristic turbidity is itself part of the habitat, cutting light penetration and likely favouring a fish that relies on barbels and lateral-line sense as much as vision to find prey.
Feeding
In the wild Kryptopterus limpok is a midwater predator, taking small fishes, prawns and insect larvae — a diet consistent with an active, mobile hunter working through turbid water where ambush and sensory cues matter more than pursuit in open, clear water. Its long, sensitive maxillary barbels and lateral line are the likely tools for detecting prey where visibility is poor.
Where it has been kept, reports describe it taking small invertebrates and zooplankton readily, along with sinking dried foods once settled, and live or frozen bloodworm, Tubifex and small earthworms. As with most Kryptopterus, a shy or newly introduced fish can be slow to find prepared foods and may need live or frozen items to get established, though this species' predatory habits and larger mouth make it less exclusively dependent on tiny drifting foods than the small transparent glass catfishes.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Kryptopterus limpok. Glass and sheatfish catfishes in this genus are essentially unrecorded in captive breeding, and the near-total absence of the species from the aquarium trade means there has been little opportunity for hobbyists to observe reproductive behaviour even informally. What is known of related river Siluridae points to open-water spawning tied to seasonal flooding, but this has not been confirmed for K. limpok specifically.
Breeding
Kryptopterus limpok is not bred in the aquarium. Glass catfishes in this genus are, with rare exception, not captive-bred at all — the trade in Kryptopterus species generally, where it exists, relies on wild-caught fish, and K. limpok in particular is described as almost unheard of in the ornamental trade. Larger relatives in the wider Siluridae, such as Ompok and Wallago, are river spawners that where commercially propagated at all are farm-bred rather than home-bred. There is no established home-breeding method for this species, and none should be assumed.
In the aquarium
This is a size-trap fish in the fullest sense: an adult length around 10 in rules out the vast majority of home aquaria, and anyone offered a juvenile Kryptopterus limpok should plan for a genuinely large system — a footprint on the order of 240 by 23.5 in or more has been suggested as a long-term minimum for comparable large glass catfish. It is also, in practice, an extremely unlikely fish to encounter, since it is almost never traded and what does surface is wild-collected rather than farmed.
As a scaleless catfish it carries the same medication sensitivity as its relatives — copper-based treatments and some other medications should be dosed conservatively. It should be handled and moved in a container rather than netted where practical, as with most catfishes, to avoid tangling fins and stressing the fish, though K. limpok's reduced dorsal fin and lack of heavy locking spines make it less hazardous to net than a Synodontis or an ictalurid. Water should be kept soft to moderately hard and neutral to slightly acidic (roughly pH 6.0–7.5) at 68–82 °F, in a spacious, well-filtered setup with open swimming room reflecting its midwater, schooling habits in the wild — though given the near-absence of captive-husbandry reports, care recommendations here are extrapolated from its biology and from close relatives rather than from an established aquarium track record.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Kryptopterus limpok as Least Concern, reflecting a wide distribution across mainland and island Southeast Asia and no evidence of a significant population decline at the species level. It is not a range-restricted or single-river endemic in the way many small-range catfishes are.
That said, the lowland river and floodplain habitats it depends on across Thailand, the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, and the Sundaland rivers of Indonesia are under sustained pressure from damming, sedimentation from land-use change, and general degradation of turbid lowland rivers across the region — the same pressures affecting many other Southeast Asian river fishes. Because the species is barely present in the aquarium trade, collection for the hobby is not a meaningful conservation concern for it.
