Kryptopterus lumholtzi is a lesser-known member of the Southeast Asian glass catfish genus, described from Bulungan in northeastern Borneo and named for the Norwegian explorer and ethnographer Carl Lumholtz. Adults reach about 8.5 in SL — noticeably larger and more robust than the small, often transparent Kryptopterus species sold in the aquarium trade — with sturdy fin spines that mark it as a heavier-bodied glass catfish rather than a delicate schooling shrimp-fish. It remains poorly studied: the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, and almost nothing has been published on its behaviour or breeding beyond the type description and museum records.

Taxonomy & naming

Kryptopterus lumholtzi was described by Hialmar Rendahl in 1922, in the family Siluridae, the Old World glass and sheatfish catfishes. It was originally published as Cryptopterus lumholtzi — an older spelling variant of the genus name that persisted in some literature — and has since been standardised to Kryptopterus lumholtzi, the combination used by the Catalog of Fishes and current authorities. The genus Kryptopterus contains a mix of small, often transparent "glass catfishes" popular in the aquarium trade and larger, more opaque-bodied species like this one.

The species epithet honours Carl Sofus Lumholtz (1851–1922), a Norwegian explorer and ethnographer known for expeditions across Australia, Mexico and Borneo; he is credited with collecting the type specimen. The type locality is Bulungan, in the northeastern part of Borneo, placing the species firmly within the island's freshwater drainages rather than the mainland Southeast Asian rivers that host the familiar glass catfish species.

Morphology

Kryptopterus lumholtzi reaches a maximum recorded length of about 8.5 in SL, making it a comparatively robust, medium-sized member of the glass catfish genus rather than one of the pencil-thin, fully transparent species kept in nano tanks. FishBase describes it as a robust species with prominent fin spines, and like other Siluridae it has an elongated, laterally compressed body, a long anal fin running most of the length of the underside, and a single pair of long maxillary barbels used to sense food and surroundings in low light.

As with the rest of the genus, the skin is naked — Kryptopterus, like all Siluridae, lack scales entirely — which leaves the fish more exposed to skin damage and makes it more sensitive to copper-based and some other medications than a scaled fish. Whether adult K. lumholtzi retains the glassy translucence typical of its smaller relatives, or becomes more opaque with size and robustness as FishBase's description suggests, is not well documented in the available literature.

Habitat

The species is known from tropical Asia, specifically eastern Borneo, where the type locality of Bulungan sits within lowland freshwater river systems draining toward the coast. FishBase classes it as a benthopelagic freshwater fish, meaning it associates with both open water and the lower part of the water column rather than staying strictly at the surface.

There is no established aquarium breeding protocol for Kryptopterus lumholtzi, and it should be assumed unbred in captivity. This mirrors the wider pattern in the genus: glass catfishes (Kryptopterus) are essentially not bred in captivity, with virtually all specimens in the trade collected from the wild. Larger relatives among the Siluridae, such as Ompok and Wallago, are river spawners that are mostly propagated commercially through farming rather than home aquarium breeding.

Given the species' Data Deficient status and the near-total absence of published husbandry or spawning records, any claim about breeding triggers, fecundity or parental care for this species would be speculation rather than documented fact; none is offered here.

In the aquarium

Kryptopterus lumholtzi is rarely, if ever, seen in the aquarium trade, and detailed husbandry guidance specific to this species has not been published. At a documented adult size of around 8.5 in SL, it is meaningfully larger than the small glass catfishes (commonly under 4 in) typically sold for community tanks, and any specimen encountered should be housed with that adult size in mind rather than assessed on a juvenile's proportions — a sizing trap common across the genus.

As with all Kryptopterus, the skin is scaleless, so conservative dosing is warranted with copper-based treatments and many other medications, as for loaches, puffers and eels. The genus also carries stiff fin spines — FishBase notes this species specifically has prominent ones — which can snag in a net and jab the handler; moving the fish in a container rather than netting it is the safer approach. Given how little is documented about this species' temperament, water requirements or long-term care, it is best regarded as a fish for specialist or research collections rather than typical community aquaria.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Kryptopterus lumholtzi as Data Deficient, reflecting how little survey work has been done on this Bornean species since its description in 1922. Data Deficient is not a clean bill of health — it means there is not enough information to judge the population's status one way or the other, not that the species is secure.

Eastern Borneo's freshwater systems face ongoing pressure from logging, oil palm conversion, mining and associated sedimentation and water-quality changes, all of which can affect lowland river fish communities, though no species-specific population data exists to quantify the impact on K. lumholtzi.
