Taxonomy & naming
Kryptopterus mononema was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1846. It belongs to the family Siluridae — the Old World sheatfishes and glass catfishes — a group historically shuffled through several genera as the family was revised; the Catalog of Fishes treats Kryptopterus mononema as the currently valid combination, and older literature or aquarium labels occasionally still float other genus placements from the nineteenth-century Siluridae revisions.
The genus name Kryptopterus comes from the Greek kryptos, "hidden", and pteron, "fin", a reference to the reduced or barely visible dorsal fin typical of the genus. The species epithet mononema is likewise Greek, from monos ("single") and nema ("thread"), describing the single long, thread-like barbel pair for which the species is named. Aquarists and the trade know it simply as a glass catfish, a name it shares loosely with several congeners (K. bicirrhis, K. vitreolus, K. minor and others) that are frequently confused or mislabelled with one another.
Morphology
The defining feature of Kryptopterus mononema is transparency: the elongated, laterally compressed body is glass-clear in life, letting the vertebral column, ribs and internal organs show through, with only a faint silvery-iridescent sheen along the flanks under aquarium light. The dorsal fin is reduced to a tiny, almost invisible ray or two, while the anal fin runs long along most of the belly and provides the fish's main means of propulsion, giving it a characteristic gliding, near-motionless hover in open water. A single pair of long, thread-like maxillary barbels — the "mononema" of its name — extends from the upper jaw.
FishBase records a maximum length of 10.5 in total length for this species, a size that places it well above the diminutive glass catfish most aquarists picture. Like other Siluridae it is entirely scaleless, its naked skin adding to the glass-like effect but also making it, like loaches, puffers and eels, more sensitive to copper and to many standard fish medications.
Habitat
Kryptopterus mononema is native to Sumatra and Java in Indonesia, where it inhabits lowland freshwater rivers, backwaters and floodplain habitats typical of Sundaland's blackwater and clearwater systems. As a benthopelagic species it spends most of its time suspended in midwater rather than resting on the bottom, typically in slow current among submerged wood, roots and vegetation that offer some cover from predators despite its own near-invisibility.
It is a fish of tropical Southeast Asian lowlands, so it needs warm, stable water; the cache did not return specific measured pH or hardness figures for this species, but glass catfishes of Sundaland rivers are generally kept in soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions typical of their region — figures should be treated as a reasonable regional estimate rather than a site-specific reading for this species.
Feeding
Kryptopterus mononema is a midwater micro-predator. In the wild it hovers in loose aggregations in open water and picks off small invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other zooplankton-sized prey — rather than foraging along the substrate like most other catfishes.
In the aquarium it does best on small live or frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia, and will generally accept fine-grained dry foods once settled, though it can be shy and slow to learn prepared diets, especially when newly imported or housed with faster, more assertive tankmates that outcompete it at feeding time.
Mating
Courtship in the wild reportedly involves males performing circular display movements around females in open water, part of a loose, shoal-based pairing rather than any fixed territorial courtship. Eggs are believed to be scattered or deposited into vegetation rather than guarded in a nest.
There is no confirmed, repeatable account of this behaviour being observed or triggered in home aquaria. As with the rest of the genus, the species' reproductive biology is documented mainly from field observation, and captive spawning has not been established as an aquarium practice.
Breeding
Glass catfishes of the genus Kryptopterus, including K. mononema, are essentially not bred in captivity, and the aquarium trade for this species remains built on wild-caught stock exported from Indonesia rather than farmed or hobbyist-bred fish. Whatever spawning behaviour occurs in the wild — loose shoal courtship, eggs scattered into vegetation with minimal or no parental care — has not translated into a repeatable home-aquarium protocol.
This stands in contrast to some other catfish groups that are readily spawned by hobbyists (bubble-nesting callichthyids, for instance); prospective keepers should not expect to breed this species, and should be aware that ongoing demand for wild fish adds pressure to a population already assessed as Critically Endangered.
In the aquarium
Kryptopterus mononema is frequently sold as a small, glass-clear juvenile a few centimetres long, but the real adult size recorded for the species is around 10.5 in total length — large enough that most home aquaria cannot comfortably house a full-grown individual or, more importantly, the shoal it needs. It is a genuinely social midwater fish that stresses, discolours and hides when kept alone or in small numbers; a shoal of at least five or six in a long, spacious tank with gentle flow and open swimming room, dimly lit and furnished with driftwood and plants for occasional retreat, is the minimum for a settled group.
Because it is scaleless, treat this species conservatively with copper-based medications and many standard treatments, as with other naked-skinned catfishes. It is peaceful and easily bullied or outcompeted by bolder tankmates, so choose calm companions and feed with care to make sure this shy micro-predator gets its share. Given the size trap and its wild-caught origin, this is a species for a dedicated, well-planned setup rather than an impulse buy for a small community tank.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Kryptopterus mononema as Critically Endangered (criteria B2ab(iii)), an assessment from 2019. This is a serious status for a species still regularly seen in the aquarium trade, and it reflects pressure on its restricted Sumatra–Java lowland river habitat from factors typical of Sundaland freshwaters — habitat degradation, water quality decline and land-use change in floodplain systems.
Because the species is not bred in captivity, every wild-caught individual sold in the trade is drawn directly from these already-threatened populations. Prospective keepers should weigh this conservation status carefully, and hobbyists and retailers alike should be cautious about treating a Critically Endangered species as routine livestock.
