Taxonomy & naming
Kryptopterus piperatus was described in 2004 by Heok Hee Ng, Soetikno Wirjoatmodjo and Renny Hadiaty, part of a wave of taxonomic work that split apart what had long been treated as a handful of widespread "glass catfish" species into many narrower, often single-drainage endemics. It belongs to the family Siluridae, the sheatfishes of Europe, Africa and Asia, and to the genus Kryptopterus, the Asian glass catfishes.
The type locality lies in a small river under primary forest cover in the Alas River/Lembang River region of northern Sumatra, a habitat of moderate current, turbid water, fallen timber and muddy substrate. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Kryptopterus piperatus as a valid species; as with much of the genus, older literature and some trade lists may lump Sumatran glass catfish under broader names such as K. minor or K. macrocephalus, so care is needed when matching photographs to this binomial.
Morphology
Like the rest of its genus, Kryptopterus piperatus has an almost entirely transparent, laterally compressed, scaleless body, through which the spine, ribs and gut can be seen in good light. FishBase describes the colouration as pale brown with scattered black spots on the flanks, a long pair of maxillary barbels reaching back to the anal-fin origin, and a long-based anal fin of 49–53 rays running most of the length of the underside — the hallmark silhouette of a glass catfish. Head width runs 11.4–12.0% of standard length, body depth at the anus 22.3–24.3% SL, and eye diameter 20.3–25.3% of head length; gill raker counts are 16–17.
Maximum recorded size is a modest 4 in standard length, distinctly smaller than trade staples such as Kryptopterus vitreolus or the much larger, pond-outgrowing Kryptopterus species sold as juveniles elsewhere in the genus. The skin, as in all Kryptopterus, is naked — there are no scales — which has direct consequences for medicating this fish (see "In the aquarium"). Handled specimens are noted to give off a pungent odour, a trait shared with several Siluridae.
Habitat
Kryptopterus piperatus is endemic to Sumatra, Indonesia, known from small forest rivers with moderate current, turbid to clear water, fallen wood and muddy substrates under primary forest canopy. FishBase lists it as benthopelagic, holding in the water column near cover rather than on the open bottom.
Water at the type locality and across its range is warm, soft and on the acidic-to-neutral side: aquarium-keeping references for the wider glass-catfish group give roughly 70–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.5 (optimum near 6.5), and soft water below about 10 °dGH. As a scaleless forest-river fish it is sensitive to poor water quality and benefits from a mature, well-established, densely planted or wood-furnished setup rather than a new tank.
Feeding
Kryptopterus piperatus is a midwater micro-predator, in keeping with the genus's habit of hanging in loose shoals in open water and picking off small invertebrates drifting past. In the aquarium, glass catfish of this genus take small live and frozen foods readily — bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, mysis and other small crustaceans — and will often refuse dry food entirely, or accept it only once well settled and confident.
They are shy, unaggressive feeders that are easily out-competed by faster or bolder tankmates, so food should be offered where the shoal is holding rather than dropped at the surface of a busy community tank.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Kryptopterus piperatus specifically. Across the glass catfish genus generally, wild spawning is poorly observed, and aquarium accounts for the more commonly kept species describe scattered eggs among fine-leaved plants or roots rather than any nest-building or pair-bonding — but this has essentially never been replicated by home aquarists for any Kryptopterus, and nothing further can be said with confidence for this species.
Breeding
Kryptopterus piperatus is not known to have been bred in the home aquarium. Glass catfish in this genus are, as a group, essentially unbred in captivity: the trade in the more widely kept species relies entirely on wild-caught fish, and the rare successful spawns reported in the aquarium literature for related Kryptopterus have generally involved hormone induction by researchers rather than natural aquarium reproduction. There is no reason to expect this small, narrow-range Sumatran species to differ, and no parental care has been recorded. Anyone offered captive-bred stock under this name should treat the claim with scepticism.
In the aquarium
At a maximum of roughly 4 in SL, Kryptopterus piperatus is one of the smaller, genuinely home-tank-appropriate members of a genus that also includes species routinely sold undersized as juveniles and left to outgrow ordinary aquaria — buyers of any "glass catfish" should always confirm the species and its adult size before stocking, since Kryptopterus as a genus is a well-known size trap. This species itself stays modest, but it is a shoaling fish that should be kept in a group of six or more to feel secure; singly or in twos it becomes reclusive and stressed.
Because it is naked-skinned and scaleless, it is medication-sensitive in the same way as loaches, puffers and true eels — dose copper-based treatments and many standard medications conservatively, often at half strength, and avoid unnecessary treatment. It has no locking spines of the kind that make many catfish awkward to net, but as a nervous, easily startled fish it is still best moved gently in a container rather than chased with a net. Provide soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, dim lighting, floating cover and driftwood or fine planting to mimic its shaded forest-river habitat, and keep tankmates peaceful and similarly unaggressive.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Kryptopterus piperatus as Vulnerable (VU), an assessment made in 2019 under criteria B2ab(ii,iii) and D2, reflecting its restriction to a small number of Sumatran river systems and ongoing habitat loss from deforestation and land conversion within its narrow endemic range.
As with much of the Sumatran freshwater fauna, the species' fortunes are tied to the fate of primary-forest river catchments under mounting pressure from logging, agriculture and development; because trade in this genus generally relies on wild collection rather than captive breeding, any commercial interest in this species would add direct collection pressure on top of habitat loss.
