Pangasianodon gigas, the Mekong giant catfish, is the world's largest purely freshwater fish by weight and one of the most critically endangered — a scaleless, silver-grey leviathan of the Mekong River that can reach 3 metres in length and weigh over 300 kg. Juveniles are sold in the aquarium hobby at 6–12 in, but they grow at 0.5–1 in per month into a fish that belongs in a public aquarium or large pond, not a home tank. Fewer than 2,500 individuals are thought to remain in the wild, and the species is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Pangasianodon gigas was described by Pierre Chevey in 1931 from specimens collected in Cambodia. It belongs to the family Pangasiidae, the Asian shark catfishes, a group of large, streamlined catfishes distributed from South Asia through mainland Southeast Asia. The genus Pangasianodon was originally a subgenus of Pangasius; the separation was formalised by Gustiano and Isbrücker in 1999, and the Catalog of Fishes now treats Pangasianodon as a distinct genus with P. gigas as its sole member.

Older literature uses the combination Pangasius gigas, and it remains in circulation. The two species formerly placed alongside it — the iridescent shark (P. hypophthalmus) and Bocourt's giant catfish (P. bocourti) — have been returned to Pangasius under the current classification, leaving P. gigas alone in Pangasianodon. Care must be taken when reading older references that use Pangasius gigas: they refer to the same animal.

Morphology

The Mekong giant catfish has a massive, laterally compressed body typical of the Pangasiidae, with a broad, flattened head, a terminal mouth, and very small eyes set high on the skull. The body is entirely scaleless — the skin is naked — silver-grey above and paler below. The caudal fin is deeply forked, and the dorsal and pectoral fins carry stiff spines. Adults become progressively paler with age; juveniles may show faint markings.

Reported maximum length is 118 in standard length (FishBase), making this the world's largest obligate freshwater fish by weight. The scaleless skin is not merely a taxonomic detail: it means the species is more sensitive to copper and many chemical treatments than a scaled fish, and medications should be used at conservative doses. The dorsal and pectoral spines are notable for handling — they should be respected and the fish moved in a container rather than a net.

Habitat

The Mekong giant catfish is native to the Mekong River basin, with records from Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. The type locality is Cambodia. It occupies the large, deep main-channel pools of the Mekong and its major tributaries, retreating to the deepest pools during the dry season. It is highly migratory, moving upstream to spawn in the wet season and downstream in the dry, a pattern that has been severely disrupted by dam construction.

Water conditions in the lower to middle Mekong are warm and near-neutral: temperatures range from 75–90 °F, pH approximately 6.5–7.5, and hardness soft to moderate. This is not a soft, blackwater fish in the Amazonian sense — the Mekong is a turbid, moderately mineralised large-river system. The species is largely a dry-season deep-pool dweller and a wet-season migrant, and the entire life cycle depends on an unbroken, free-flowing river corridor.

Feeding

Adult Pangasianodon gigas are large nocturnal predators. In the wild the diet includes fish, large aquatic invertebrates and whatever meaty prey is available in the deep pools; juveniles are more omnivorous and shift toward piscivory as they grow. In captivity the species accepts large meaty foods — fish pieces, whole prawns, meat-based pellets — fed after dark when natural activity is highest.

The size trap is critical to understand for anyone keeping juveniles: a fish that accepts small pellets at 8 in will, within a year or two, require prey-sized food and tank capacity that most home aquarists cannot provide. Any fish or invertebrate small enough to swallow will be consumed; tankmates must be of a size that cannot fit in the catfish's mouth, and in practice the adult fish's scale makes truly compatible tankmates almost impossible outside very large systems.

Mating

Natural mating behaviour in Pangasianodon gigas is documented only in the wild and at commercial farms, never in home aquaria. The species is highly migratory and spawning occurs during upstream migrations in the wet season; the exact spawning sites in the wild are not precisely known. Sexual maturity is not reached until approximately 13 years of age, and external sexing — beyond the fuller body of ripe females — is not straightforward.

In Thai and Cambodian aquaculture programmes, broodfish are caught or maintained in large outdoor ponds and induced to ripen with hormone injections (typically carp pituitary extract or synthetic hormones such as LHRH analogue). Stripping of eggs and milt is then performed manually. The entire mating process is therefore a managed, commercially scaled operation that is not replicable by home aquarists.

Breeding

Pangasianodon gigas is not bred in home aquaria. The combination of adult size (up to 3 metres), late sexual maturity (around 13 years), requirement for hormone-induced spawning, and the need for large outdoor ponds or raceway systems places any breeding programme firmly in the domain of commercial aquaculture or government-run conservation hatcheries. Commercial farming in Thailand and Cambodia relies entirely on hormone induction; there are no confirmed reports of spontaneous captive spawning.

Conservation hatchery programmes exist in Thailand, where the species is also a commercial food fish, and some farm-raised fish have been released into the Mekong in restocking efforts. Escapees from farms have been recorded but have shown limited evidence of successful integration with the wild population, which continues to decline. For the home aquarist, breeding this species is not a realistic objective.

In the aquarium

The Mekong giant catfish is the defining example of the aquarium size trap. Juveniles of 6–12 in are occasionally offered in the trade and are hardy, fast-growing, and adaptable; they grow rapidly at 0.5–1 in per month under good conditions. A semi-adult of 23.5–39.5 in requires at minimum a 1,000-litre system; a fish approaching its adult size of 3 metres requires a public aquarium tank or a very large outdoor pond of 300,0.5 US gal or more, and a lifespan estimated at 20–50+ years means the commitment is multi-decade. This fish should not be purchased for any home setup.

The scaleless skin imposes the standard Pangasiidae care caveat: copper-based treatments and many chemical medications must be used at half-dose or avoided entirely. Move the fish in a container — never a net — to avoid injury to the fish's skin and from its spines. Water should be maintained at 75–82 °F (the cooler end of its range suits captive fish well), pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderate hardness. The fish is nocturnal, hides during daylight, and is highly predatory toward any tankmate it can swallow. It is not a community fish at any size.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Pangasianodon gigas as Critically Endangered (CR, 2013 assessment), with a declining population estimated at fewer than 2,500 wild individuals. The primary drivers of decline are habitat fragmentation from dam construction on the Mekong — which blocks the species' long upstream migration routes — overfishing, and incidental capture in fisheries targeting other species. The Mekong is one of the most dammed river systems in Southeast Asia, and the lower Mekong mainstream dams constructed and planned since 2010 are considered an existential threat to the species' remaining migratory corridor.

The species has legal protections in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, and international trade is restricted, but enforcement across the river's multinational course is inconsistent. Government-sponsored restocking programmes release hatchery-reared juveniles into the Mekong, though the ecological value of restocking into a degraded, dam-fragmented system is debated. The aquarium trade draws on farm-raised juveniles; wild collection for the hobby is not a significant factor, but the existence of a small commercial trade in wild-caught fish for food persists in some range states.
