Pangasius nasutus, the Asian shark catfish, is a large Pangasiidae catfish of the Mekong River basin in Southeast Asia, reaching 19.5–29.5 in standard length at maturity. It is widely sold as a juvenile of a few centimetres and marketed as a small 'shark cat', but adults are river fish that belong in public aquaria or large ponds, not standard home tanks. Scaleless, with locking pectoral and dorsal spines, it is medically sensitive and must be handled in a container rather than a net. Bred commercially by hormone induction, it is not a home-aquarium breeding project.

Taxonomy & naming

Pangasius nasutus was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1863, initially from specimens collected in the Mekong drainage. It belongs to the family Pangasiidae — the shark catfishes — a family of large-bodied Siluriformes endemic to South and Southeast Asia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Pangasius nasutus (Bleeker, 1863) as the valid combination; older literature may place the species under Silurus or allied genera reflecting the historical lumping of Asian catfishes.

The genus Pangasius contains around 25 valid species and is centred on the great river systems of Indochina, including the Mekong, the Chao Phraya, and the Irrawaddy. In the aquarium trade the genus is dominated by Pangasianodon hypophthalmus (the iridescent shark), but P. nasutus circulates occasionally under the trade names 'Asian shark catfish' and 'whip-tail catfish'. The two species are similar in build but differ in size and distribution; aquarium fish are often mislabelled within the genus.

Morphology

Pangasius nasutus shares the streamlined, laterally compressed body plan of the family: a broad flattened head, a pointed snout, two pairs of barbels (a maxillary pair and a shorter mandibular pair), a tall falcate dorsal fin, a strongly forked caudal fin, and an elongate body tapering to a narrow caudal peduncle that gives the fish its 'whip-tail' silhouette. The body is naked — entirely without scales — and the skin has a smooth, silvery-grey to blue-grey sheen that pales on the belly.

Adult standard length reaches 19.5–29.5 in (FishBase; aquarium literature), placing P. nasutus firmly in the large-catfish category. The dorsal and pectoral fins are armed with stiff, serrated, locking spines. Once erected the pectoral spines lock in place and cannot easily be folded; they tangle in nets and can drive deeply into the hand of a keeper. The scaleless skin is thinner than that of armoured catfishes and more permeable to dissolved chemicals, requiring conservative medication dosing.

Habitat

The species is native to the Mekong River basin, with records from Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam (FishBase). It inhabits large, warm, slow-moving to moderately flowing freshwater rivers and their major tributaries, typically in the middle and lower reaches where water depth and current are substantial. Its native waters are warm (approximately 75–82 °F), neutral to slightly acidic, and of soft to moderate hardness — not a hard alkaline environment, but also not the extreme blackwater of Amazonian species.

Juveniles may be found closer to bankside vegetation and river margins; adults move into deeper channel water. Like most Pangasiidae, P. nasutus is a riverine fish adapted to the seasonal fluctuations of Mekong hydrology, including wet-season spates and dry-season draw-downs.

Feeding

Pangasius nasutus is a carnivore, taking fish and crustaceans in the wild (FishBase). As a large-bodied predator with a capacious mouth it is an opportunist: any fish, prawn, or invertebrate small enough to swallow is prey. It forages predominantly at night, which is typical for the genus.

In the aquarium or pond setting it accepts large meaty foods including whole small fish, prawns, large earthworms, and sinking carnivore pellets of appropriate size. Fish must be offered food after lights-out to ensure it feeds; daytime feeding is often ignored. Any tankmate that fits in the mouth will eventually be eaten — companions must be demonstrably larger than the catfish's gape, which is substantial.

Mating

In the wild, Pangasius species are migratory spawners that move upstream during the onset of the wet season to spawn in fast-flowing, oxygenated reaches. Courtship and pair formation details in P. nasutus specifically are poorly documented in the published literature; the species has not been observed spawning under controlled aquarium conditions.

Commercially, Pangasius are brought into reproductive condition using hormone induction (pituitary extract or synthetic GnRH analogues), stripping eggs and milt manually, and fertilising artificially. The process is routine at fish farms across Southeast Asia. No account of natural pair bonding, spawning site selection or mating behaviour in home aquaria exists for this species.

Breeding

Pangasius nasutus is bred commercially via hormone induction at aquaculture facilities in Southeast Asia; it is not a species that has been bred in the home aquarium, and there is no practical path to home breeding given its adult size. The fish must reach sexual maturity — which requires years of growth and large pond or tank space — before any reproductive attempt is possible. Induced spawning yields large egg batches that are fertilised and hatched in controlled hatchery conditions; fry require substantial grow-out facilities.

The aquarium hobby receives juveniles grown on from commercial hatcheries. Hobbyists should have no expectation of breeding this species; the husbandry challenge of simply housing adults responsibly is the primary concern.

In the aquarium

Pangasius nasutus is a demanding fish to keep responsibly and is frequently the victim of impulse purchases. Juveniles of 1–2.5 in are regularly sold in chain stores under trade names that obscure the adult size; buyers who do not research the species may be surprised to find they own a fish that will reach 19.5–29.5 in and live 15–20 years. A minimum realistic tank for an adult is well in excess of 1,0.5 US gal, and even that is borderline for a fish of this size; a large outdoor pond or public aquarium exhibit is the honest recommendation.

Two points of care are non-negotiable. First, the skin is scaleless and permeable — copper-based treatments and many standard medications should be used at half the dose recommended for scaled fish, and some treatments should be avoided entirely; always research medication safety for naked-skinned catfish before treating. Second, the pectoral and dorsal spines are stiff, serrated and locking: never net this fish. Move it in a large container or bag; a netted Pangasius will lock its spines through the mesh and cannot be freed without risk of spine injury to keeper and fish alike.

Water should be warm (75–82 °F), well-oxygenated and clean; the fish produces substantial waste and robust filtration is essential. It is an active nocturnal predator and must be kept only with companions too large to swallow. Given its eventual size and the difficulty of rehoming large catfish, prospective keepers should consider carefully before purchasing a juvenile.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List now assesses Pangasius nasutus as Least Concern. The Mekong basin is under significant and growing pressure from hydropower dam construction, sand mining, water abstraction, overfishing and habitat alteration; many Pangasiidae are fished commercially and several species in the genus are considered threatened or depleted in parts of their range.

Aquarium trade specimens are likely sourced from commercial hatcheries rather than wild collection, since the species is farmed at scale in Southeast Asia. Wild populations in the Mekong nonetheless face the same cumulative pressures affecting the basin's large migratory fishes.
