Taxonomy & naming
Pimelodus blochii was formally described by the French naturalist Achille Valenciennes in 1840, in the fourth volume of the monumental Histoire naturelle des poissons co-authored with Georges Cuvier. The species is placed in the family Pimelodidae — the long-whiskered catfishes of the Neotropics — and the genus Pimelodus, which Lacépède established in 1803 and which holds several dozen species distributed across South American river systems. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Pimelodus blochii as the valid combination.
The species has at various times circulated in the trade under informal names conflating it with closely related pimelodids. Pimelodus is a heavily revised genus and some historical literature placed members of this lineage under older combinations; the Catalog of Fishes remains the governing authority for the valid name. The epithet blochii honours Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723–1799), the German naturalist who produced one of the great early systematic treatments of fishes.
Morphology
Pimelodus blochii has the archetypal long-whiskered catfish plan: a broad, depressed head, a streamlined body that deepens just behind the head and tapers to a deeply forked tail, and three pairs of barbels — one long maxillary pair that can reach well past the base of the dorsal fin and two shorter pairs on the lower jaw. The body is pale grey to silver with a pattern of fine dark spots or stripes along the flanks, giving it the "four-lined" trade name used for some colour forms. The fins are clear to lightly pigmented.
Adult total length reaches 14 in (FishBase), though the common length of fish entering the trade is around 8 in. Like all pimelodids the skin is entirely scaleless — smooth and naked — which has direct implications for medication. The dorsal and pectoral fins each carry a stiff, serrated, locking spine. These spines serve as defence: when erect, they lock into place and can inflict a painful jab; they also tangle instantly in a net, making container-transfer essential.
Habitat
This species ranges across the major lowland river systems of tropical South America, including the Amazon, Orinoco and Paraná drainages and the river systems of the Guianas. It is a fish of large, warm, flowing freshwaters — river channels, floodplain tributaries and várzea-edge waters — rather than still or blackwater systems.
Water parameters in its range are warm (roughly 75–82 °F) and neutral to slightly acidic, with pH values typically between 6.0 and 7.5. This is broadly the chemistry of South American whitewater and clearwater rivers rather than the tannin-stained blackwater of the upper Rio Negro — soft to moderately hard, circumneutral conditions. Pimelodus blochii is a benthic and mid-water species by day, retreating to cover, and a more active forager at night.
Feeding
Pimelodus blochii is an omnivorous micro-predator and benthic forager. In the wild it takes aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — along with small fish and organic detritus, hunting mostly after dark when its long barbels give it a sensory advantage over prey.
In the aquarium it adjusts well to prepared foods: sinking catfish pellets and wafers, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and other invertebrate-based frozen foods are all accepted. Because it is primarily nocturnal and will be outcompeted in bright-lit tanks by faster diurnal fish, it is worth dropping food in after lights-out. Larger individuals are capable of taking small fish tankmates, so companion choice should account for that. Sandy or fine-gravel substrate lets the barbels function normally and reflects natural foraging behaviour.
Mating
Wild-breeding data for Pimelodus blochii indicates strongly seasonal reproduction tied to the rainy-season flood pulse of South American rivers, a pattern shared by the majority of large pimelodids. Spawning is thought to be associated with upstream migrations and rising water, triggered by hydrological and temperature cues linked to annual flooding. Clutch sizes are large — reported estimates approach tens of thousands of eggs — and fertilisation is external.
Sexual dimorphism is not pronounced and the sexes are not reliably distinguishable by external characters in non-breeding condition, though ripe females become notably fuller-bodied around the abdomen during the breeding season.
Breeding
Pimelodus blochii has not been bred in home aquaria. It is a large, migratory pimelodid whose natural spawning is keyed to the rainy-season flood pulse and upstream migrations of major South American rivers — cues that cannot be reproduced in a domestic tank. Commercial production, where it occurs, relies on hormone-induced spawning at farm scale.
Aquarists should treat this species as wild-collected stock. The implications for conservation are worth bearing in mind: the aquarium trade draws on wild populations, so responsible sourcing and appropriate tank conditions that extend the fish's lifespan matter. Captive breeding by hobbyists is not a realistic prospect.
In the aquarium
The most common error with Pimelodus blochii is underestimating its adult size. Fish sold in the trade are typically 3–4.5 in juveniles, but a healthy adult reaches 14 in total length. A group of six or more — the sociality of pimelodids means single fish often do poorly — requires a tank of at least 65 US gal (around 60–75 US gallons) and ideally larger. Sizable, fast, midwater-capable fish make the best companions; anything small enough to fit in the mouth will eventually disappear.
Two biological traits demand specific care. First, the skin is completely scaleless: Pimelodus blochii is more sensitive to copper-based medications and some chemical treatments than a scaled fish. Dose conservatively — half-dose and close observation is the starting point — and prefer medication methods less stressful to scaleless fish. Second, the locking pectoral and dorsal spines are genuine hazards. Never net this fish; move it in a bucket or container. A spine locked in net mesh is difficult to free without injury to both fish and keeper.
Provide a sandy or fine-gravel substrate to protect the barbels, which can degrade in abrasive conditions. Dim lighting or shaded areas encourage natural daytime resting behaviour; feed sinking foods after lights-out. Filtration must handle a heavy bioload — large omnivorous catfish are significant waste producers. Water parameters should sit in the tropical South American range: 75–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.5.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Pimelodus blochii as Least Concern, reflecting its broad distribution across multiple major South American river basins — the Amazon, Orinoco, Paraná and the Guianas — and the absence of evidence of rapid population decline.
Nonetheless, it is a wild-collected aquarium and food fish across its range, and large pimelodids in general face pressure from habitat modification, dam construction that disrupts migratory routes, and overfishing in food-fish markets. The rainy-season migratory spawning that defines the breeding biology of this group is specifically vulnerable to barriers and altered hydrology. Where aquarium stock is traded, it originates from wild capture rather than captive breeding, underscoring the importance of responsible sourcing.
