Pimelodus pictus, the pictus catfish, is one of the most striking long-whiskered catfishes in the hobby: a boldly spotted, hyper-active South American pimelodid whose flowing white barbels and energetic schooling behaviour make it immediately recognisable in any dealer's tank. What the pet-trade packaging rarely says is that this fish grows to 14 in standard length, carries moderately venomous locking spines, and is naked-skinned and medication-sensitive — details that matter enormously once it outgrows its starter aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Pimelodus pictus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1876. It belongs to the family Pimelodidae — the long-whiskered catfishes — a large Neotropical family encompassing everything from small schooling species to the giant piraíba (Brachyplatystoma filamentosum). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Pimelodus pictus as the valid combination; the genus Pimelodus has been stable for this species since its original description.

The species has sometimes been sold under the trade name "angelicus pimelodus" (or misspelled "pimelodus angelicus"), which is not a valid scientific synonym but a hobbyist marketing label. The genuine Pimelodus blochii and related congeners are occasionally confused with it in the trade; the dense black spots over a bright white body and the exceptionally long maxillary barbels identify P. pictus reliably. The genus Pimelodus remains a large and somewhat heterogeneous assemblage; molecular work continues to clarify relationships within Pimelodidae, but the valid placement of this species has not been disputed.

Morphology

The pictus catfish has the classic pimelodid silhouette: a streamlined, torpedo-shaped body, a broad, flattened head, a tall forked caudal fin, and three pairs of barbels — one very long maxillary pair that can reach or exceed body length, and two shorter pairs on the lower jaw. The ground colour is silver-white, overlaid with conspicuous rounded black spots on the body and fins; the pattern is consistent and does not fade significantly with age or stress, making it a good identification feature.

Adult standard length reaches 14–15.5 in (FishBase), though most aquarium specimens are seen at 8–12 in. The skin is entirely scaleless — naked, like all pimelodids — which has direct consequences for medication tolerance. At the front of the dorsal and each pectoral fin there is a stiff, serrated, locking spine; these can interlock with a net mesh and are moderately venomous, producing painful puncture wounds if the fish is mishandled.

Habitat

Pimelodus pictus is native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of South America, with records from Colombia, Peru, and Brazil. It inhabits the main river channels and larger tributary systems, favouring areas with fast to moderate current, sandy or gravel substrate, and some cover in the form of submerged wood and rocky debris. It is not a stagnant-water or blackwater specialist; wild populations are found in clearwater and whitewater river systems, though it tolerates slightly tannin-stained conditions.

Water parameters in its range are warm and soft to moderately soft, with temperatures typically in the 72–82 °F range and pH on the acidic to neutral side. The species is a midwater and benthic rover after dark, spending daylight hours sheltered under submerged structure or schooling loosely in shaded areas of the water column.

Feeding

Pimelodus pictus is a nocturnal benthic omnivore and active micro-predator. In the wild it forages after dark along riverbeds and in mid-water, taking aquatic invertebrates, small fish, crustaceans, and organic detritus. The long maxillary barbels are chemosensory organs used to detect prey in the dark; the fish is fast and agile enough to take small fish and shrimp opportunistically.

In the aquarium it will accept sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, white mosquito larvae, and other prepared or frozen foods. Because it is most active after lights-out, it competes poorly with faster daytime feeders; food should be offered shortly after the aquarium lights are turned off to ensure adequate intake. Any fish small enough to fit in its mouth — including small tetras, small corydoras, and all shrimp — is at genuine risk of predation, particularly at night.

Mating

Little detailed information on the mating behaviour of Pimelodus pictus in the wild has been published, and the species has not been spawned in home aquaria under controlled conditions. Large pimelodid catfishes in South America are generally understood to undertake seasonal migrations tied to flood-pulse cycles, ascending tributary streams to spawn during the wet season; spawning is triggered by environmental cues including rising water levels, falling temperature, and changes in water chemistry.

Sexual dimorphism is not pronounced and reliable external sexing is difficult; mature females may be somewhat fuller-bodied than males, particularly when gravid, but there is no reliable colour or fin-ray difference to separate the sexes in a dealer tank or in the aquarium.

Breeding

Pimelodus pictus is not bred in home aquaria. Commercial aquaculture specimens are produced in South American fish farms using hormone induction — gonadotropin injections that override the environmental cues the species requires in the wild. The technique is well established in the Neotropical catfish trade and accounts for most of the pictus catfish available in shops worldwide; some wild-collected individuals also enter the trade from Colombia and Peru.

The dependence on hormone induction and the large adult size effectively rule out home breeding. Keepers who obtain this species should treat it as a wild or farm-bred import and focus on providing appropriate long-term care rather than expecting spawning. The absence of captive breeding also means that the species' detailed reproductive biology — clutch size, larval duration, parental care if any — remains poorly documented in the scientific literature.

In the aquarium

The pictus catfish is sold widely and cheaply as a small juvenile, typically 1.5–3 in, and the size trap is the single biggest welfare failure associated with it: at 14–15.5 in standard length, a full-grown adult requires a very large aquarium — a minimum of 80 US gal is often cited, and a longer footprint (59 in+) is essential for a fish that moves constantly and needs open swimming space. A single pictus outgrows a 47 in tank within a couple of years; buying two or three juveniles for a community aquarium is a commitment to rehoming or upgrading.

Three care points are non-negotiable. First, the skin is completely scaleless: copper-based medications and many antiparasitic treatments must be used at half-dose or avoided entirely; the fish is at least as sensitive as loaches in this respect. Second, the pectoral and dorsal spines lock erect when the fish is stressed and are moderately venomous — always move a pictus catfish in a container or soft bag, never in a mesh net, and handle with care to avoid puncture wounds. Third, it is predatory toward any tankmate small enough to swallow: small tetras, nano fish, shrimp, and small corydoras are all at risk overnight. Appropriate tankmates are robust fish of comparable or larger size — larger characins, bigger cichlids, other sizable pimelodids — in a well-filtered, well-oxygenated aquarium with some driftwood cover for daytime retreat.

The species is generally peaceful toward fish too large to eat and does well in groups of three or more, which reduces individual skittishness and encourages the active schooling behaviour that makes it so appealing. Water should be kept warm (72–82 °F), soft to moderately hard, and near-neutral to slightly acidic; strong filtration and good current are appreciated.

Conservation

Pimelodus pictus has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Its natural range spans the Amazon and Orinoco basins — two of the largest and most hydrologically complex river systems on Earth — and the species is not believed to be under immediate range-wide threat. Commercial demand is largely met by hormone-induced farm production in South America rather than by large-scale wild capture, which reduces direct collection pressure.

Broader threats to Amazonian and Orinocan river fish — deforestation, sedimentation, dam construction, and water-quality degradation in headwater tributaries — are relevant background concerns for all pimelodids, but no species-specific data on population trends for P. pictus exist in the published literature. The absence of a formal IUCN assessment means its status is precautionary-NE rather than confirmed secure.
