Taxonomy & naming
Pterocryptis cochinchinensis was first described by Achille Valenciennes in 1840 under the original combination Silurus cochinchinensis, with the type locality falling within 'Cochinchina', the French colonial name covering what is now southern Vietnam and adjacent Cambodia. The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Pterocryptis — a group of small to medium silurids (family Siluridae) found across South and Southeast Asia — where it currently sits as a valid species per the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences).
The genus name Pterocryptis is derived from Greek pteron (wing or fin) and kryptis (hidden), alluding to the very long, low adipose fin that blends almost seamlessly into the body profile — a characteristic shared across the genus. The epithet cochinchinensis simply means 'of Cochinchina', anchoring the species to its historical collection region in the Indochinese lowlands.
Morphology
Pterocryptis cochinchinensis has the elongate, compressed body plan typical of the family Siluridae: a broad, somewhat depressed head, small eyes set well forward, and a tapering tail region. The dorsal fin is short and set near the head; the anal fin is very long, running most of the length of the underside and providing most of the locomotion. An elongate, low adipose fin runs from behind the short dorsal to the caudal fin, and the tail is weakly forked.
The fish is fully scaleless — the skin is entirely naked — a feature common to all silurids and one with significant care implications. Adults reach approximately 8–10 in standard length. Colouration is typically pale brownish-grey to olive, often plain or with diffuse mottling that provides camouflage against sandy or silty substrates. Three pairs of barbels are present: a long maxillary pair reaching well past the head, and two shorter pairs on the lower jaw.
Habitat
This species is native to the Mekong River drainage, with records from Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand. The Mekong basin in its lower reaches is a lowland system characterised by warm temperatures, moderate current, soft to slightly firm substrates of sand and silt, and water that ranges from soft and acidic to near-neutral depending on season and tributary.
Typical Mekong lowland habitat parameters are approximately 75–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, and low to moderate hardness — reflecting the soft, slightly acidic character of many large Southeast Asian river systems rather than the hard alkaline water of rift lakes or European rivers. Like most silurids, P. cochinchinensis is a benthic species, resting and foraging along the river bottom and likely seeking cover under woody debris, root tangles or undercut banks during daylight hours.
Feeding
Pterocryptis cochinchinensis is a nocturnal benthic feeder, active primarily after dark. In the wild it forages along the bottom for aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — along with detritus and opportunistic small prey. The long barbels are sensory organs used to detect food in low-light or turbid conditions.
In the aquarium it can be trained onto sinking catfish pellets, frozen bloodworm, tubifex and brine shrimp, and other prepared foods. Because it feeds predominantly at night, it is advisable to offer food after lights-out to ensure it gets adequate rations without being outcompeted by more active diurnal tankmates.
Mating
No detailed breeding observations for Pterocryptis cochinchinensis are documented in either the scientific or hobbyist literature. Like many obscure Southeast Asian silurids it remains essentially unstudied in captivity, and its mating behaviour in the wild is unknown.
By analogy with other small silurids in the family, the species is assumed to be an egg-layer, but the precise spawning mode — whether eggs are scattered over substrate, deposited in cavities, or attended by one or both parents — has not been confirmed. Until observations are published, the mating strategy must be considered unknown.
Breeding
Pterocryptis cochinchinensis has not been bred in the home aquarium to any documented degree, and commercial aquarium supply relies entirely on wild-collected specimens. Data on spawning triggers, egg counts, incubation period and fry development are absent from the available literature.
Keepers wishing to attempt breeding would need to replicate the species' soft, warm, slightly acidic Mekong conditions and provide suitable spawning structure, but without a published account to guide the attempt, success cannot be anticipated. Honest reporting requires acknowledging the gap: this is a species about which breeding data are simply sparse.
In the aquarium
Pterocryptis cochinchinensis is a data-sparse species in the hobby, but several care requirements follow directly from its biology. Adults reach 8–10 in standard length, so a tank of at least 47 in in length is appropriate for a single specimen — the size trap applies here as with all catfish; do not assume a juvenile will stay small. Soft, warm, slightly acidic water (75–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, low hardness) replicates the Mekong habitat and should suit this species.
The fish is entirely scaleless and therefore med-sensitive: copper-based treatments and many standard medications should be used at reduced doses (commonly half the labelled dose is recommended for scaleless fish such as loaches, puffers and silurids). Move the fish in a container rather than a net — even without the stout locking spines of some catfishes, netting a scaleless benthic fish risks skin abrasion and stress. Provide caves, pipe sections or dense driftwood for daytime cover; the species is primarily nocturnal and will remain hidden in bright, open conditions. It is peaceful toward tankmates too large to eat, though very small fish or invertebrates may be taken.
Conservation
Pterocryptis cochinchinensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). No species-specific threat analysis is available in the published literature or conservation databases.
The Mekong basin faces substantial anthropogenic pressure: large mainstream dams (notably in the upper Mekong in China and the lower Mekong in Laos) have altered flow regimes, sediment loads and fish migration routes; floodplain wetlands have been drained; and commercial fisheries are intense throughout the lower basin. How these pressures affect P. cochinchinensis specifically is unknown. The aquarium trade relies on wild-collected fish, which is a further consideration given the lack of captive breeding success. A formal IUCN assessment would be a useful step for this and many other data-sparse Mekong silurids.
