Taxonomy & naming
Pangasius mekongensis was described by Renny Gustiano, Guy Teugels and Bernard Pouyaud in 2003, part of a wave of Pangasius revisions that clarified a genus long confused by superficially similar species sharing the Mekong and other Southeast Asian rivers. It belongs to the family Pangasiidae, the shark catfishes, within the order Siluriformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Pangasius mekongensis as the valid combination in genus Pangasius.
The genus name Pangasius derives from a local Southeast Asian vernacular name for these river catfishes; the species epithet mekongensis is a straightforward Latin toponym meaning "of the Mekong", naming the river system to which the species is native. Because several Pangasius species overlap in range and general appearance, museum-level examination of morphometrics was needed to separate mekongensis from its closest relatives, and misidentification in older literature and in the aquarium trade remains a real risk.
Morphology
Like other Pangasiidae, Pangasius mekongensis has a streamlined, laterally compressed, shark-like body with a deeply forked tail, a small adipose fin, and a single pair of maxillary barbels that shortens with age. The dorsal and pectoral fins carry a stout, serrated, locking spine, and the skin is naked — Pangasius, like other catfishes, has no scales, which has direct consequences for medicating the fish (see "In the aquarium").
FishBase records a maximum size of 16.5 in SL (standard length) for this species, and total length in mature fish is correspondingly larger still. That is a substantial, deep-bodied river fish, not a small aquarium subject — juveniles sold in the trade at a few centimetres give little hint of the size they are capable of reaching. Coloration is typically silvery to grey along the flanks with a paler belly, the plain countershaded pattern typical of open-water Pangasiidae.
Habitat
Pangasius mekongensis is native to the Mekong River system, recorded from Vietnam and the wider Mekong basin of mainland Southeast Asia. FishBase describes it as a benthopelagic species of freshwater and brackish reaches, meaning it ranges through the water column near the bottom of large rivers and can tolerate the mixed salinities found in the lower Mekong and its delta.
It is a facultative air-breather, an adaptation shared with several Pangasiidae that allows it to gulp atmospheric air and survive in oxygen-poor water — a useful trait in the slow, silt-laden, seasonally deoxygenated stretches of a large tropical river system. As a large-river species it is adapted to warm, tropical conditions and to the flow, turbidity and seasonal flood pulse of the Mekong rather than to still, clear, aquarium-scale water bodies.
Feeding
Pangasius mekongensis is reported as omnivorous with a voracious appetite, foraging opportunistically in the river for whatever animal and plant material it can find, including smaller fish and invertebrates within reach of its gape. As with other large Pangasiidae, its feeding is largely unselective, and a fish of this eventual size functions as an opportunistic predator and scavenger rather than a delicate feeder.
In captivity it readily accepts live, frozen and commercial foods and shows strong scavenging behaviour, eating almost anything offered. Because it grows into a genuine predator, tankmates need to be too large for it to swallow — a fish this size and this indiscriminate an eater will treat any bite-sized companion as food.
Mating
There is no evidence of natural pair-bonding or courtship behaviour documented for Pangasius mekongensis in the way it would matter for a home aquarium. Like other large Pangasiidae, wild spawning is tied to the Mekong's seasonal flood pulse, with adults migrating and spawning in response to rising water — a pattern studied mainly in the commercially important Pangasius species farmed across the basin.
In practice, reproduction of this species in captivity is not something a hobbyist will ever observe or manage. Where Pangasiidae are propagated at all, it is done by hatcheries using hormone injection to induce spawning in mature broodstock, not through natural courtship in a tank.
Breeding
Pangasius mekongensis is a large, commercially significant river catfish, and — consistent with its relatives in the genus — it is farm- or hormone-bred at commercial scale rather than bred by hobbyists. Mature broodstock are induced to spawn with hormone injections at aquaculture facilities, and the resulting fry are raised for the food-fish and ornamental trades; this is standard practice across Pangasiidae, most famously in the related farmed "basa"/"swai" species.
It is essentially not bred in the home aquarium: the fish requires years of growth to reach reproductive maturity at a size no home tank can accommodate, and natural courtship and spawning behaviour has not been replicated outside controlled hatchery conditions. Anyone keeping this species should expect to enjoy it purely as a display fish, not a breeding project.
In the aquarium
Pangasius mekongensis is a textbook size-trap fish: it is sold small, grows fast, and reaches at least 16.5 in SL as an adult — a length that, combined with its deep body and active swimming, makes it unsuitable for the overwhelming majority of home aquariums. Prospective keepers should treat any Pangasius offered for sale as a fish that will outgrow a typical tank within one to two years and requires a public-aquarium-scale system, a very large indoor pond, or an outdoor pond in warm climates to house responsibly for its full life.
Where it is kept at appropriate scale, provide strong filtration and high dissolved oxygen — despite being a facultative air-breather, it is reported as sensitive to poor water quality — along with open swimming space, since it is an active, shoaling river fish that does poorly cramped or isolated. Its skin is scaleless, so it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper and to many medications; dose conservatively. It also carries a stiff, serrated, locking spine in the dorsal and pectoral fins that can snag a net and jab the keeper, so it should be moved in a container rather than netted. Given its predatory adult size, tankmates must be robust species too large to be swallowed.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Pangasius mekongensis as Least Concern. It remains a component of the Mekong River fish fauna and, like many Pangasiidae, benefits from a wide native range across the basin.
That said, the Mekong basin as a whole faces mounting pressure from hydropower dam construction, altered flood pulses, sediment starvation and overfishing, all of which affect large migratory river catfishes as a group even where an individual species is not (yet) separately flagged as threatened. Much of the Pangasius supply in trade, ornamental and food alike, now comes from aquaculture rather than wild capture, which eases some direct fishing pressure on wild Mekong populations.
