Taxonomy & naming
Synodontis eupterus was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1901, based on material from the Kasai River — a major tributary of the Congo. The family Mochokidae, the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes, is a large, exclusively African group within the order Siluriformes, and the genus Synodontis is its most species-rich member, encompassing well over a hundred valid species distributed across tropical Africa. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Synodontis eupterus Boulenger, 1901 as the valid name; no synonyms are in common use.
The species epithet eupterus derives from the Greek eu- (well, good, fine) and pteron (fin, wing), together meaning 'with a fine fin' or 'well-finned' — a direct reference to the tall, elaborately filamentous dorsal fin that gives the fish its English common name, the featherfin squeaker. Like all members of the genus, S. eupterus possesses the three pairs of barbels (one maxillary pair and two branched mandibular pairs) and the stiff, serrated locking spines that are hallmarks of Synodontis.
Morphology
The featherfin squeaker has the characteristic squeaker build: a broad, somewhat flattened head, a robust body that tapers toward a forked caudal fin, three pairs of barbels, and the paired maxillary membranes that some Synodontis use to rasp surfaces. Its most diagnostic feature is the dorsal fin, which is taller than in most congeners and has distinctively elongated, feather-like rays — particularly evident in healthy adults. The ground colour is a warm brownish-grey to tan, marked with variable dark spots or blotches; the pattern fades somewhat with age. Maximum recorded size is approximately 9.5 in standard length (FishBase).
The skin is entirely scaleless and naked — there are no bony plates, scutes or armour. This smooth, unprotected skin means the fish is pharmacologically sensitive to copper and many other medications. At the leading edges of both the dorsal and pectoral fins sit stiff, serrated, locking spines. These can be locked erect and cannot simply be pulled free from a net or handler's skin; they are also used to produce the audible squeak or grunt that names the family, by stridulation against the pectoral girdle.
Habitat
Synodontis eupterus is a West and Central African river fish. Its native range centres on the Congo River drainage — including the Kasai River, which is its type locality — and extends into river basins of Cameroon. This places it firmly in the broad humid-forest and savannah river zone of the Congo basin, one of the world's largest river systems.
The water in these habitats is characteristically soft and warm, with temperatures in the range of approximately 68–79 °F and a pH of around 6.0–7.5 (FishBase). These are not the alkaline, mineral-rich waters of the East African Rift lakes; S. eupterus is a West/Central African river species that does best in moderately soft, neutral to slightly acidic conditions. It inhabits the benthic zone — the bottom and immediate substrate — and shelters among submerged wood, rocky crevices and dense vegetation by day.
Feeding
Synodontis eupterus is an omnivore and benthic forager. In the wild it feeds predominantly after dark, picking through the substrate for insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, and consuming algae and plant matter opportunistically. The branched mandibular barbels are used to locate food by touch and taste in low-light conditions.
In the aquarium it is undemanding and accepts a wide range of foods: quality sinking pellets and wafers form the staple, supplemented with frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia and chopped earthworm. Snails are taken readily. Because it is primarily nocturnal, food should be offered shortly after lights-out to ensure it competes effectively, particularly in a mixed community where diurnal fish may consume much of the ration before the featherfin becomes active.
Mating
Detailed observations of mating behaviour in Synodontis eupterus are sparse in the published literature and in the aquarium hobby. Unlike Synodontis multipunctatus, which is a documented brood parasite of mouthbrooding cichlids, S. eupterus is not known to employ the cuckoo strategy. Its mating behaviour is consistent with the typical pattern for non-parasitic Synodontis: the sexes approach readiness following conditioning with varied, protein-rich foods, and spawning appears to involve the release of adhesive eggs over substrate, with little or no active courtship display.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle. Mature females are generally fuller-bodied and broader across the abdomen when viewed from above, particularly when in spawning condition; males are slimmer. Distinguishing the sexes in juveniles or outside of condition is difficult.
Breeding
Synodontis eupterus is not commonly bred in the home aquarium. It is not known to be reproduced through the cuckoo brood-parasitism method of S. multipunctatus, and there is no documented pattern of hormone-induced commercial farming for this species. Scattered hobby reports suggest occasional spawning does occur — producing adhesive eggs scattered on or near the substrate — but fry are rarely raised successfully, and the species is generally considered difficult to breed in captivity.
Keepers wishing to attempt breeding should raise water temperature slightly toward the upper end of the range, condition the fish with varied live and frozen foods over several weeks, and provide flat stones or broad leaf litter as potential spawning sites. Eggs, if laid, should be removed to a separate rearing vessel with gentle aeration, as the adults may consume them. Success rates are low, and most featherfin squeakers in the trade are wild-collected from their native range.
In the aquarium
The featherfin squeaker is a rewarding but large catfish that demands a suitably sized aquarium. Adult size of around 9.5 in SL means this fish will ultimately outgrow a small tank; a minimum footprint of 47 in is a realistic starting point for a single adult, and more space is better. The size trap is real — juveniles are frequently sold at 2–3 in and look manageable, but given proper care they reach their adult dimensions over a few years.
Water should be soft to moderately hard and neutral to slightly acidic (pH 6.0–7.5), warm (68–79 °F), and well filtered. Plenty of structure is essential: driftwood, caves, overturned clay pots and dense planting give this nocturnal fish the daytime shelter it needs; a well-decorated tank will encourage natural behaviour and reduce stress. As a scaleless catfish, S. eupterus is sensitive to copper-based medications and certain other treatments — always dose conservatively (half the stated dose is a common recommendation for naked catfish), and remove it from a treatment tank if possible. Its locking pectoral and dorsal spines tangle easily in a net and can pierce skin; always move this fish in a container of water rather than netting it. The species is generally peaceful toward tankmates too large to be eaten and can be kept with other West African river fish of similar disposition.
Conservation
Synodontis eupterus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, and its status is Not Evaluated. No published conservation data are available for the species, and it remains inadequately surveyed across its range in the Congo basin and Cameroon.
As a localised Central African river endemic, the long-term threats relevant to S. eupterus are broadly those facing the Congo basin more widely: deforestation and sedimentation of river channels, artisanal and commercial fishing pressure, and the general degradation of lowland tropical river habitats. The aquarium trade relies on wild-collected specimens, since captive breeding is rarely achieved; sustained collection from wild populations without assessment of stock sizes is a background concern for all such species. A formal IUCN evaluation would require systematic surveys of its range and abundance.
