Pangio muraeniformis, the spotted coolie loach, is a slender, eel-like kuhli from the peat-stained forest streams of Sundaland — Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra and Borneo. It rarely exceeds 2 in and spends most of its waking hours buried in fine sand or tucked behind a leaf. Its near-scaleless skin, nocturnal habits and tendency to vanish into the substrate make it one of the most easily overlooked and underfed fish in the hobby; in a group of six or more with soft sand and cover, it rewards patience with a fascinating, unhurried social life played out after the lights go off.

Taxonomy & naming

Pangio muraeniformis was described by the Dutch zoologist Lieven Ferdinand de Beaufort in 1933, originally placed in the genus Acanthophthalmus — the old name for the kuhli-loach grade of small, eel-like cobitids. That genus was synonymised with Pangio by Maurice Kottelat in 1987, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) now lists the valid combination as Pangio muraeniformis (de Beaufort, 1933), with the original author name in parentheses to record the change of genus. Fish sold under the legacy name Acanthophthalmus muraeniformis are the same animal.

The species belongs to the family Cobitidae, the true loaches, within the superfamily Cobitoidea. It sits firmly in the kuhli-loach clade alongside P. kuhlii, P. semicincta and several dozen congeners across Sundaland and mainland Southeast Asia. Kottelat's 1987 revision was a foundational rearrangement of the group, and the current genus Pangio holds well over forty described species, with taxonomic work ongoing. GBIF records P. muraeniformis under taxon ID 2367945 and WoRMS recognises it as a valid species within Cobitidae.

Morphology

The spotted coolie loach is a miniature, highly elongate fish with a rounded, almost cylindrical body that tapers to a small pointed snout and a compressed tail. It rarely exceeds 2 in standard length. The ground colour is pale yellow-tan to pinkish, marked with a row of dark brown to black spots or blotches along the flanks — the feature that gives it both its specific epithet (alluding to its superficial resemblance to a moray eel, genus Muraena) and its trade name. The pattern varies somewhat across its range and between individuals.

Like all Pangio it is effectively scaleless to the touch — the scales are minute and deeply embedded in the skin, leaving the fish smooth and sensitive. A small erectile suborbital spine is present beneath the eye, as in other cobitids; the fish can deploy this defensively and it will snag net mesh, so a container is safer for moving it. The paired fins are small and low-set, the pectoral fins sometimes used to prop the fish up as it rests on the bottom. There is no meaningful external difference between males and females at rest, though ripe females are visibly broader-bodied when in condition.

Habitat

Pangio muraeniformis is native to slow-moving, shaded lowland forest streams and associated swampy habitats across Sundaland: Peninsular Malaysia (including Singapore), the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Borneo. These are typically blackwater or near-blackwater systems, their water stained amber by dissolved tannins and humic acids leaching from leaf litter and peat soils, with very low conductivity, soft substrate and abundant cover in the form of submerged roots, leaves, fallen wood and dense riparian vegetation.

Water conditions are characteristically warm (75–86 °F), soft (under 100 ppm hardness), and acidic (pH 5.5–6.5), with gentle flow or near-stillness. The fish buries itself in fine sand or hides under leaf accumulations by day and emerges to forage at night. It is a fish of intact or near-intact lowland forest catchments — precisely the habitat that has been most severely reduced across Singapore and much of the Malay Peninsula and Sundaland by deforestation, peat drainage and development.

Feeding

Pangio muraeniformis is a micro-omnivore and nocturnal substrate-sifter. In its native streams it picks through fine sand and leaf litter after dark, taking small invertebrates — worms, insect larvae, microcrustaceans and similar invertebrate prey — along with whatever organic detritus it encounters. It does not browse algae or take food at the water surface.

In the aquarium it accepts sinking foods readily: fine-grade sinking pellets, micro-wafers, small frozen foods such as bloodworm and tubifex, and live blackworm. The single most common keeper error is underfeeding: because it feeds after dark and is easily outcompeted by faster diurnal tankmates, it quietly goes hungry while surface-feeders are well fed. The practical fix is to drop sinking food after lights-out, when the loaches emerge, and to ensure the food reaches the substrate undisturbed. A group fed consistently this way stays in noticeably better condition than fish in a standard daytime-feeding regime.

Mating

Sexing P. muraeniformis in the aquarium is difficult. The clearest distinction is body depth: ripe females are substantially broader across the midsection, giving the abdomen a swollen look when viewed from above, which can be obvious when the fish is in good condition and approaching spawning readiness. Outside of that seasonal cue, the two sexes are very alike in colour and length and are not reliably distinguished by the casual observer.

Little is documented about the species' mating behaviour in the wild or in captivity. As a member of the kuhli-loach group it is presumed to spawn in the manner characteristic of the clade — a nocturnal scatter among floating plant material or over open water near the surface — but direct observations for this species are sparse in the published literature. Seasonality, tied to wet-season flood pulses in its native streams, is thought to be a trigger, but no verified account of aquarium conditioning and pairing is available in the accessible literature.

Breeding

Pangio muraeniformis is very rarely bred in the aquarium. Like other kuhli-loach species it is believed to scatter small, greenish adhesive eggs among the roots of floating plants or surface vegetation, with no parental care from either sex after spawning; the eggs hatch quickly in warm, soft water and the larvae are tiny and difficult to spot or feed. The commercial trade in this species is supplied primarily by wild-collected fish from Southeast Asian range states, not by captive breeding at scale.

The obstacles to home breeding are substantial: the fish must be kept in a group so that sexes are present; conditioning on a varied live and frozen diet is needed to bring females into spawning readiness; and some form of seasonal stimulus — a simulated rainy-season shift in temperature, water volume or chemistry — may be necessary to trigger spawning. Keepers who have achieved incidental spawnings typically report finding the tiny green eggs stuck to the underside of floating leaves or along the waterline; fry survival without deliberate intervention is low. A keeper should expect to enjoy P. muraeniformis as a long-lived, cryptic display animal rather than a breeding project.

In the aquarium

A well-kept group of spotted coolie loaches is one of the most rewarding microfauna in a planted or blackwater aquarium — and one of the most commonly kept badly. The first requirement is soft fine sand: this is a burrowing fish that pushes its snout through substrate constantly, and coarse gravel or sharp substrate damages the skin and prevents natural behaviour. A bed of fine white or silver sand 1–2 in deep, with a generous scatter of dried Indian almond leaves and a few smooth pieces of wood or PVC pipe for shelter, replicates the essentials of its forest-stream habitat.

Kuhli loaches are social and should be kept in groups of at least five to six. A single loach or a pair disappears, rarely feeds properly and tends to remain permanently hidden; a group of six or more becomes noticeably more active, especially under dim light or after dark, and the fish pile together in a loose, intertwined knot in a favourite hiding spot — a characteristic group behaviour. Tank size can be modest given the adult length (a 15–20 US gal aquarium suits a small group), but water quality must be excellent: these fish are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite and to dissolved waste building up in a deep sand bed, so regular gravel-vacuuming of the sand surface and frequent partial water changes are important.

Medication requires care. The near-scaleless skin absorbs treatments rapidly and the fish is sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of many standard aquarium medications. At the same time, kuhli loaches are susceptible to ich and sometimes the first fish in a community to show white spots. The practical approach is to use half-strength doses of copper-free medications, remove activated carbon during treatment, and watch the fish closely. Tankmates should be small and peaceful; large or boisterous fish stress the loaches and outcompete them at feeding time.

Conservation

Pangio muraeniformis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment), reflecting that it remains fairly common across a reasonably broad range in Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo. However, the picture is uneven: within Singapore its distribution is now highly restricted and local populations are considered at risk. Singapore has lost the vast majority of its lowland forest and associated freshwater habitats to urban development, and blackwater species adapted to intact or near-intact peat-swamp and forest-stream systems have declined sharply there.

Across the wider Sundaland range the longer-term threat is the same: industrial-scale deforestation, peat drainage for agriculture, and the channelisation and pollution of lowland watercourses are reducing and degrading the soft, shaded, acidic-water habitats that this and many other forest-stream cobitids depend on. The aquarium trade draws on wild-caught fish; no large-scale captive breeding programme is known. As long as intact lowland forest streams persist in parts of Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo, the species is unlikely to face immediate extinction risk, but the trajectory of its forest-stream habitat is not encouraging.
