Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora kalochroma was originally described by Pieter Bleeker in 1851 under the name Leuciscus kalochroma, from material collected at Bandjarmasin (present-day Banjarmasin) in southern Borneo. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the original publication as Natuurkundig Tijdschrift voor Nederlandsch Indië 1(3): 272, with the type locality fixed in Borneo. A lectotype (RMNH 4983) was designated by Alfred in 1963. The combination Rasbora kalochroma was established when the species was transferred into the genus Rasbora, where it has remained.
The species belongs to the core Old World Rasbora lineage, a large and taxonomically complex assemblage of cyprinids distributed across South and Southeast Asia. Multiple genera — Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides — have been carved out of a formerly expansive Rasbora over the past three decades, but R. kalochroma itself has not been reclassified and the current Catalog of Fishes retains it in Rasbora. The epithet kalochroma comes from the Greek kalos (beautiful) and chroma (colour), a fitting name for a species with a notably rich colour pattern.
Morphology
The clown rasbora is one of the larger Rasbora species, reaching a maximum standard length of 4 in. The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed, with a rounded snout and a relatively large eye. Ground coloration is warm golden-copper along the flanks, shading to a paler belly. Two large, intense dark blotches — one behind the gill cover in the mid-body region and a second further back near the caudal peduncle — give the fish its common name and make it instantly recognisable among the peat-swamp rasboras.
The fins are largely hyaline (clear) with a faint yellowish tinge. In good condition and under appropriate blackwater parameters, the iridescent quality of the flanks deepens considerably, and the blotches take on a rich blue-black intensity. Sexual dimorphism is subtle: females tend to be deeper-bodied and more rounded in the abdomen when gravid, while males remain slimmer. There are no markedly distinct colour differences between the sexes.
Habitat
Rasbora kalochroma is a specialist of the peat swamp forest biome of Sundaland, found across Peninsular Malaysia (Selangor, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor), Borneo (from Kuching in Sarawak to the Kapuas River basin and South Kalimantan), and Sumatra (Gunung Sahilan in Riau, and the offshore islands of Bangka and Belitung). This is a highly distinctive habitat: water stained almost the colour of strong tea by dissolved humic and tannic acids leaching from waterlogged peat soils, extremely soft and acidic, warm and slow-moving, heavily shaded by dense overhanging vegetation.
Typical blackwater stream conditions in these peat swamps involve pH values well below 5.0 in the most acidic sites — though R. kalochroma is encountered across a somewhat wider pH band up to 7.5 in peat canals and transitional blackwater reaches. Water temperature across the equatorial lowlands where it lives runs from around 73–82 °F. The substrate is typically soft leaf litter and silt; the water column is amber, tannin-rich and low in dissolved minerals. This is one of the most chemically extreme freshwater environments on Earth.
Feeding
In the wild, Rasbora kalochroma is an omnivore and opportunistic feeder in the peat swamp water column, taking small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, zooplankton and surface-fallen arthropods — along with algae and organic matter available in the tannin-rich environment. The relatively large size of the species means it can handle slightly larger prey items than the miniature peat-swamp rasboras such as Boraras.
In the aquarium it readily accepts live and frozen foods, including bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp, which support the best colour and condition. Quality dried flakes or small pellets are taken when the fish is acclimatised, but a varied diet with regular live or frozen components produces noticeably superior health and colour depth. Like many blackwater fish it tends to be unhurried in feeding; ensuring food reaches mid-water and is not monopolised by faster tankmates is worth attention.
Mating
Rasbora kalochroma is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Courtship follows the typical pattern for the genus: a driving male pursues a ripe female actively through the vegetation, pressing alongside her as the pair releases eggs and milt among plants, roots or over substrate. There is no pair bond, no nest construction and no territory defended around a spawning site.
Spawning is triggered by warm, soft, slightly acidic water and is often stimulated in captivity by a gradual water change with very soft, warm water mimicking the influx of rain into the peat swamp environment. The scattered eggs are adhesive and fall into the leaf litter and plant thicket below, where the adults take no further interest in them — and will readily consume them if given the opportunity.
Breeding
Breeding the clown rasbora in captivity requires replicating its blackwater peat-swamp chemistry — soft, acidic water is not merely preferable but essentially required for consistent success. A separate breeding tank with very soft water (under 5°dH), pH in the range of 5.0–6.5, a temperature around 79–81 °F and a dark, tannin-stained environment (dried leaves, peat filtration or blackwater extract) provides the right conditions. Fine-leaved plants, Java moss or a layer of dried leaves on the bottom serve as egg-deposition sites.
After spawning, the adults should be removed promptly, as they will eat eggs. The scattered adhesive eggs hatch in a couple of days at tropical temperatures. The small fry initially require infusoria or equivalent micro-foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Growth is moderate by cyprinid standards. This species is infrequently bred in captivity compared with the smaller peat-swamp rasboras, but it is achievable with attention to water chemistry.
In the aquarium
Rasbora kalochroma is a peaceful, active schooling fish that demands appropriate water chemistry above all else. A group of at least eight to ten individuals is strongly recommended — fewer than this produces visible social stress and dull behaviour, whereas a proper shoal exhibits the lively, cohesive group dynamics and full colour intensity the species is capable of. The tank should be spacious enough for comfortable movement given the fish's 4 in size.
Water chemistry is non-negotiable for long-term health: soft (2–10°dH), acidic (pH 5.0–7.5 in captivity, though the lower end of this range is preferred) and warm (73–82 °F). Blackwater tannin staining from dried Indian almond leaves, alder cones or peat filtration replicates the fish's natural environment and noticeably intensifies its copper-gold flanks and the depth of its dark blotches. Heavy planting, subdued lighting and a dark substrate complete the setup. The clown rasbora is not aggressive and suits a peaceful community of other Sundaland blackwater species, but its larger size means it can easily outcompete or intimidate the miniature Boraras and Trigonostigma species; tankmates of comparable size and temperament are preferable.
Conservation
Rasbora kalochroma is listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2019–2020 by Ahmad, A.B.), reflecting its relatively wide distribution across Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo and Sumatra. Despite this assessment, the species is intimately tied to a habitat — tropical peat swamp forest — that is among the most severely threatened ecosystems in Southeast Asia. Peat swamp drainage for oil palm and pulpwood plantation agriculture, combined with large-scale peat fires, has eliminated vast tracts of this biome across Sundaland within recent decades.
The persistence of the clown rasbora across its range depends on the survival of functional peat swamp and blackwater catchments. The LC status does not mean the species faces no pressure; rather, it indicates that its population remains sufficiently widespread that species-level extinction is not currently imminent. Localised extirpations from degraded catchments are probable but poorly documented. Wild-caught specimens do appear in the specialist trade, though demand is lower than for the miniature peat-swamp species, which reduces direct collection pressure on this particular fish.
