Taxonomy & naming
Devario chrysotaeniatus was described by Chu in 1981. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Devario chrysotaeniatus (Chu, 1981), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the species' transfer out of its original genus.
When described, the species was placed in the genus Danio, under which combination — Danio chrysotaeniatus — most of the earlier literature refers to it. The reclassification of the Asian danionin cyprinids by Fang (2003) transferred the larger, more elongate species previously held in Danio into a resurrected Devario, and chrysotaeniatus moved with them. Devario, the giant danios, accommodates the larger, more robust members of the danionin assemblage across South and Southeast Asia and southern China.
The species epithet chrysotaeniatus derives from the Greek chrysos (golden) and taenia (band or stripe), a direct reference to the yellow-gold lateral banding that is the fish's most prominent feature. In the aquarium trade it is sold under the common name gold-striped danio.
Morphology
Devario chrysotaeniatus is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed cyprinid reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 3 in. It carries two pairs of short barbels at the mouth — a feature shared with other Devario — and a complete lateral line running from behind the gill cover to the caudal peduncle. The dorsal fin has 8–9 branched rays and the anal fin 12–13 branched rays, fin-ray counts consistent with other members of the genus.
The defining feature is the lateral colour pattern: a dark, well-defined mid-lateral stripe runs the length of the flank, with a second, more weakly pigmented stripe positioned above it. The overall effect, combined with the species' yellow-gold background on the flanks, gives rise to both its scientific epithet and its common name. The back is typically darker and the belly paler. No detailed description of sexual dimorphism is available from the published record, but as in other Devario, gravid females are likely deeper-bellied than males.
Habitat
The gold-striped danio is native to the upper Mekong drainage in southwestern China (Yunnan Province, in the vicinity of Manzhuo and Jinghong), the Nam Youan River basin of northern Laos, and Chiang Mai province in northern Thailand. These localities sit at higher elevations in the Mekong watershed, where tributaries run fast, clear and cold over gravel and rock substrates.
The species inhabits hill streams and small rivers with variable seasonal flow driven by monsoon rainfall, and the high dissolved oxygen demand typical of fast-water cyprinids applies here. Water conditions recorded in the hobby literature for aquarium maintenance — 73–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, moderate hardness (18–143 ppm) — reflect the cool, near-neutral chemistry of upland Mekong tributaries, which contrasts sharply with the warm, acidic blackwater of the Sundaic lowlands inhabited by many other danionins.
Feeding
In its natural hill-stream habitat, Devario chrysotaeniatus is presumed to feed on aquatic insects and their larvae, small invertebrates, and whatever organic material is carried by current over gravel and rock — a diet typical of active, mid-water to surface-oriented danionin cyprinids in fast-flowing upland waters.
In aquarium conditions the species feeds readily on dried foods including flakes and small pellets, and benefits from regular supplements of live or frozen invertebrates such as bloodworms, Daphnia and brine shrimp. It is an active, vigorous feeder and, like other Devario, can outcompete slower or shyer tankmates at the surface if feeding is not managed carefully.
Mating
Devario chrysotaeniatus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Like virtually all danionin cyprinids, it forms no pair bond and constructs no nest. Spawning is triggered by environmental cues — warming water and rising levels in the wet season in its native Mekong tributaries — and is likely to occur in groups rather than true pairs in the wild.
Courtship consists of driving behaviour in which males pursue gravid females through the water column and vegetation. At the moment of spawning, eggs and milt are released simultaneously; the slightly adhesive eggs settle among plants, moss or substrate. Adults take no interest in their eggs after spawning and will consume them if given the opportunity.
Breeding
Breeding Devario chrysotaeniatus in captivity follows the standard protocol for egg-scattering danionins. A shallow, well-filtered spawning tank with a layer of fine-leaved plants (Java moss, hornwort) or a mesh bottom to protect eggs from being eaten is set up with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in the 73–79 °F range. A small group of well-conditioned fish — at least a couple of males per female — is introduced, and spawning typically follows at dawn.
The adults should be removed after spawning is complete. The adhesive eggs hatch in approximately two days at 77 °F, and the larvae become free-swimming after a further two to three days, at which point they accept infusoria and finely powdered food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Detailed published accounts of captive breeding specifically for this species are sparse, but the approach described here reflects standard danionin practice.
In the aquarium
The gold-striped danio is an active, schooling cyprinid that should be kept in groups of at least eight to ten individuals. Kept in smaller numbers it becomes nervous and may harass calmer tankmates; in an adequate group its vigour is directed internally within the school. Its speed and energy make it a poor companion for slow-moving, long-finned, or delicate species.
A tank of at least 31.5–35.5 in in length, well-filtered for good current and high dissolved oxygen, and fitted with a secure lid — this species is an accomplished jumper — suits it best. Water should be kept cool and clean: 73–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, moderate hardness. Weekly water changes of 30–50% are recommended to maintain the spotless, well-oxygenated conditions that reflect its hill-stream origin. It is not widely kept but makes a striking and active display fish where its striped flanks catch the light.
Conservation
Devario chrysotaeniatus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (2022.2). The DD designation reflects a genuine gap in knowledge rather than an absence of concern: the species is known from a limited number of localities in the upper Mekong basin across Yunnan, northern Laos, and Chiang Mai province, and no systematic population survey has been conducted.
The threats applicable to the species' range include deforestation in Mekong headwater catchments, agricultural and mining pollution of hill streams, and the longer-term effects of climate change on upland water temperatures and seasonal flow regimes. The upper Mekong has also experienced extensive hydropower development, which alters flow dynamics and sediment regimes in ways that can degrade the gravel-bed, clear-water habitats on which species like D. chrysotaeniatus depend. Targeted surveys of its known localities and adjacent drainages are needed before a more precise threat category can be assigned.
