Taxonomy & naming
Pethia stoliczkana was described by the British ichthyologist Francis Day in 1871 under the original combination Barbus stoliczkanus, and was subsequently moved through several generic placements including Puntius stoliczkanus — the name under which it appears in most twentieth-century aquarium literature — and a brief period as a subspecies of Puntius ticto. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Pethia stoliczkana (Day, 1871), with junior synonyms including Puntius stoliczkanus (Day, 1871), Puntius ticto stoliczkanus, Barbus ticto stoliczkae, Pethia stoliczkanus, and Puntius stoliczkae.
The genus Pethia was resurrected and redefined by Pethiyagoda et al. in their 2012 revision of South Asian barbs, pulling a cluster of small species out of the unwieldy, polyphyletic Puntius. The genus name is a Sinhala vernacular term used in Sri Lanka for small cyprinid fishes. The species epithet stoliczkana commemorates the Czech-born naturalist Ferdinand Stoliczka, who worked widely across British India and central Asia in the nineteenth century.
A 2020 study published in the Journal of Applied Ichthyology recorded the first verified occurrence of P. stoliczkana from the River Kopili in the Brahmaputra drainage, Assam, India — significantly expanding the species' documented range westward beyond its Mekong-basin type locality.
Morphology
Pethia stoliczkana is a compact, moderately deep-bodied barb reaching a maximum of approximately 2 in in standard length. Like other members of the genus, it has the short-snouted, laterally compressed form typical of small Asian barbs, with a single pair of maxillary barbels.
Males are noticeably slimmer and more intensely coloured than females, carrying brighter pigmentation on the flanks and fins; females become visibly deeper-bodied when gravid with eggs. The exact patterning — ground colour, spot placement, and fin coloration — follows the general Pethia template of a silvery to golden body with dark markings, though specific details for this species should be confirmed against voucher material.
Habitat
In its native range across Myanmar, Thailand and Laos, P. stoliczkana inhabits flowing streams and small tributaries of the upper Mekong system, typically in shaded headwaters with good water movement and high oxygen levels. The substrate is sand or gravel, often overlain with leaf litter and driftwood, with marginal and submergent vegetation providing cover. These are predominantly clear-water environments, near-neutral in pH and of moderate hardness.
Parameters recorded for the species in captivity — around 72 °F, pH approximately 6.75, and hardness near 143 mg/L — align with the cool, well-oxygenated, near-neutral conditions of upland mainland Asian streams. The recent record from the River Kopili in the Brahmaputra drainage of Assam, northeastern India, indicates the species also occupies comparable habitat in a geographically distinct drainage system.
Feeding
Pethia stoliczkana is an omnivore, taking a broad diet in the wild that includes algae, organic detritus, small aquatic insects, worms and zooplankton gleaned from the substrate, the water column and submerged surfaces. This dietary breadth is typical of the genus and of small barbs generally, which are opportunistic grazers well suited to the varied food resources of headwater stream environments.
In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of foods. Small live and frozen items — bloodworm, Daphnia, Artemia — are particularly relished and help maintain condition, but good-quality flake or micro-pellet foods form a practical daily staple. A varied diet supports good coloration and reproductive readiness in conditioned fish.
Mating
Like all barbs, P. stoliczkana is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond, nest, or territory is maintained beyond the brief act of spawning. When a male is ready and a female is visibly gravid, the male pursues her actively through fine-leaved plants or over the substrate, driving her until the two press briefly together and release eggs and milt simultaneously.
The adhesive eggs scatter among plant leaves, over gravel or into the leaf litter, where — without any intervention — the adults may turn and consume them. Colour and activity in males peak during courtship. There is no guarding of eggs or fry at any stage.
Breeding
Pethia stoliczkana is an egg-scatterer that can be spawned in captivity using standard barb methods. A separate shallow tank with slightly soft, near-neutral water, a fine-leaved plant mass or spawning mop, and a mesh bottom layer to protect eggs from the adults is the usual setup. A well-conditioned pair — or a small group with more males than females — is introduced in the evening; spawning typically occurs in the morning.
The adhesive eggs fall through the mesh or lodge among plant leaves, out of reach of the adults, which should be removed after spawning is complete. Eggs hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures, and the larvae become free-swimming a few days after that, at which point small live foods such as infusoria followed by freshly hatched brine shrimp are appropriate first foods. Adults eat both eggs and fry given the opportunity, so separation is essential for viable yields.
In the aquarium
Pethia stoliczkana is an active, shoaling barb best kept in groups of six or more, where the natural social hierarchy within the school moderates inter-individual interactions. A well-planted aquarium with open swimming lanes, some driftwood, and a sandy or fine-gravel substrate mimics the shaded stream habitats of its native range.
Water conditions should reflect those of the cool, well-oxygenated upland streams from which the species comes: temperatures around 72 °F, a near-neutral pH (approximately 6.5–7.0), and moderate hardness. Good filtration and regular water changes are more important than hitting precise parameters. The species is an undemanding feeder and suitable tankmates are other active, peaceful fishes of similar size. Its modest maximum length of around 2 in makes it well suited to medium-sized community aquaria.
Conservation
Pethia stoliczkana is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, last evaluated in March 2010. The species has a reasonably broad distribution across the upper Mekong drainage — encompassing Myanmar, Thailand and Laos — and the recent confirmation of its presence in the Brahmaputra system of Assam, India suggests the range may be wider than previously documented.
No species-specific population declines have been recorded, though the freshwater ecosystems of mainland Southeast Asia and northeastern India face diffuse pressures from agricultural runoff, sedimentation, and water extraction affecting upland stream quality. The Mekong basin in particular is subject to ongoing hydropower development that alters flow regimes in tributary systems. The species' apparent tolerance for a range of upland stream conditions may confer some resilience, but ongoing range-wide monitoring remains important.
