Devario leptos is a slender, stripe-patterned danionin confined to the clear, forested hill streams of two river systems in northern Laos — the Nam Tha and Nam Beng watersheds of the upper Mekong basin. Described by Fang and Kottelat in 1999, it is a small species rarely exceeding 2 in, distinguished from its congeners by a notably shallow body depth and three clean horizontal stripes along the flank. Outside a handful of specialist collections it remains little-known in the aquarium hobby, yet its restricted range and dependence on intact montane forest make it a species worth attention as Indochina's upland watersheds come under increasing pressure.

Taxonomy & naming

Devario leptos was described by Fang and Kottelat in 1999. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Devario leptos (Fang & Kottelat, 1999), the parenthetical authority indicating a transfer from the original genus at description — the species was placed in Devario from the outset of its formal description.

The genus Devario encompasses the giant danios sensu lato, a group of elongate, fast-moving schooling cyprinids distributed across South and Southeast Asia. Devario was separated from the broader Danio assemblage and has been subject to ongoing revision; several lineages formerly placed in Danio or described under informal vernacular groupings have been redistributed among Devario, Microdevario and allied genera. Devario leptos is a small member of the genus, its epithet — from the Greek leptos, meaning 'slender' or 'fine' — reflecting the notably shallow body depth (25.8–27.7% of standard length) that sets it apart from chunkier congeners.

No synonyms or prior combinations are recorded in the literature consulted.

Morphology

Devario leptos is a slim, laterally compressed cyprinid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. The body is unusually slender for the genus: depth runs to only 25.8–27.7% of standard length, giving the fish a needle-like silhouette compared with the deeper-bodied members of Devario. The mouth is slightly upturned, consistent with a fish that feeds at mid-water and near the surface.

Three horizontal stripes run along each flank, a pattern shared with several Devario species but rendered crisply against a pale ground in leptos. The dorsal fin carries 7 branched rays; the anal fin has 11 branched rays. The species lacks an infraorbital process, a character that aids separation from some similar danionins. Meristic and proportional data are documented from the original description and corroborated by FishBase records.

Sexual dimorphism has not been described in detail in the available literature, but as in most danionins females are expected to be deeper-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

Devario leptos is endemic to two watersheds in northern Laos: the Nam Tha (Louang Namtha Province) and the Nam Beng (Oudomxai Province), both tributaries of the upper Mekong. It occupies shallow flowing hill streams — recorded at depths of 2–27.5 in — with slow to moderate current over substrates of sand, pebble, rock and mud. Water clarity is described as very clear, consistent with streams draining intact montane forest where siltation is minimal.

As a benthopelagic species it moves between the lower water column and the substrate, exploiting both zones for food. The surrounding forest provides overhead shading, leaf litter and a steady supply of allochthonous invertebrate prey. Temperature and chemistry data specific to the capture sites are not published in the sources available, but the hill-stream elevation and climate of northern Laos suggest cool-to-warm conditions and near-neutral, soft-to-moderately-hard water typical of Mekong upland tributaries.

Devario leptos has not been recorded outside these two watersheds; all confirmed records originate from northern Laos.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Devario leptos a trophic level of 3.0, placing it at the lower end of secondary consumers — a micropredator and zooplanktivore feeding on small invertebrates, aquatic insect larvae and zooplankton. This is consistent with the feeding ecology of Devario generally, whose upturned mouths and fast, scanning movements in the water column suit a diet of mobile small prey taken at mid-water or near the surface.

In the absence of gut-content studies specific to this species, diet can be inferred from habitat and morphology: clear hill streams with forest cover supply abundant terrestrial insects falling onto the surface, aquatic insect larvae among the substrate and riffle zones, and drifting zooplankton in the current. In an aquarium setting, live and frozen invertebrates — daphnia, brine shrimp, small chironomid larvae — together with high-quality small flakes would represent an appropriate diet.

Mating

Devario leptos, like all members of the genus, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no bubble structure and no pair bond beyond the act of spawning. Courtship in Devario follows the pattern typical of danionins: an active male pursues a gravid female through the water column and among vegetation or structural cover, pressing close until eggs and milt are released together in brief bursts of activity.

Because the eggs are adhesive to weakly adhesive and fall to the substrate or lodge among plants, adults — including the spawning pair — will eat them opportunistically if not separated. Breeding in this species in captivity has not been documented in the hobbyist literature available; the reproductive biology described here is extrapolated from closely related Devario and consistent with the family-level pattern.

Breeding

No captive breeding account for Devario leptos is recorded in the sources consulted, and the species is rare enough in the hobby that documented aquarium reproduction remains unpublished. Based on the biology of Devario and the broader danionin group, the approach that suits related species would apply: a separate shallow tank with fine-leaved plants or a mesh bottom to protect scattered eggs from predation by the parents, conditioning on live and frozen foods, and a small temperature increase or fresh-water change to trigger spawning.

Eggs are adhesive to weakly adhesive and scattered over plants or substrate; parental care is absent, and the adults should be removed after spawning to protect the clutch. The trophic level and FishBase resilience data — minimum population doubling time under 15 months — indicate a species capable of rapid reproduction under suitable conditions. Fry would be expected to follow the typical danionin pattern: hatching within two to three days, becoming free-swimming a few days later, and accepting infusoria and then newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Devario leptos is very rarely available in the aquarium trade and is known primarily from ichthyological collections rather than hobby imports. For the small number of keepers who have obtained it, its husbandry requirements follow those of other montane Devario: a longer tank with good filtration and gentle to moderate current, clear, well-oxygenated water, and a temperature in the range appropriate for northern Laotian hill streams. Dense planting along the sides and back, with open swimming space centrally, suits the active schooling behaviour of the species.

As with all danionins it should be kept in groups — a minimum of six individuals — to express natural shoaling behaviour and reduce individual stress. Its small size (under 2 in SL) makes it compatible with other peaceful, similarly sized fish in a community setting. Diet should include live and frozen invertebrates supplemented with quality dry foods. The species' rarity means that any captive stock is of potential conservation and scientific value, and responsible record-keeping of breeding successes would be genuinely useful.

Conservation

Devario leptos is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2022.2 assessment). The listing reflects the absence of evidence of significant decline at the time of assessment, but the species' narrow endemic range — restricted to two watersheds in northern Laos — gives it an inherently limited buffer against habitat change.

The Nam Tha and Nam Beng basins lie within the Greater Mekong Subregion, where upland forest loss, agricultural expansion, infrastructure development and hydropower projects have accelerated over the past two decades. Devario leptos is a clear-water, forest-stream specialist: siltation from deforestation or road construction, and the thermal and chemical changes that follow canopy removal, can degrade the shallow hill-stream microhabitats it depends on. The upper Mekong system also faces cumulative pressure from dam construction that alters downstream flow regimes. The species' high resilience index (minimum population doubling under 15 months) provides some capacity to recover from localised disturbance, but that resilience cannot compensate for wholesale watershed degradation. Continued monitoring of its range and the condition of its forest-stream habitat is warranted.
