Taxonomy & naming
Devario neilgherriensis was described by Francis Day in 1867 on the basis of specimens collected from the streams of the Neilgherry (Nilgiri) Hills, including Ootacamund Lake and the Pykara, Avalanche and Kaity streams. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) records the valid combination as Devario neilgherriensis (Day, 1867), with the parenthetical authority signalling the original placement in a different genus.
The genus Devario encompasses the larger of the two main danio assemblages — the 'giant danios' of South and Southeast Asia — and sits within the family Danionidae. The species belongs unambiguously here: it is a relatively large-bodied, laterally striped danio of fast upland streams, matching the Devario body plan closely. A 2024 study in the Journal of Ichthyology, using DNA barcoding and morphological analysis, confirmed the taxonomic validity of D. neilgherriensis and helped untangle historical confusion surrounding its identity among similar Nilgiri hill-stream cyprinids.
The species epithet neilgherriensis is a Latinised toponym referring to the Neilgherry (Nilgiri) Hills — the entire known range of the species. The common name 'Nilgiri danio' mirrors this geography.
Morphology
Devario neilgherriensis is a moderately large, elongate danio, reaching up to 4 in in total length — at the larger end for the genus, consistent with the 'giant danio' grouping. The body is laterally compressed and streamlined, well adapted for life in fast current. The mouth is terminal to slightly upturned, and the species carries the paired barbels typical of Devario.
The colour pattern follows the classic Devario template: a series of horizontal stripes or bands running along the flank, typically blue or silver, over a pale to silvery body with an olive-gold dorsal surface. Precise colour details in live fish are sparse in the published literature, and captive observations are limited given the species' near-absence from the hobby.
Sexual dimorphism is moderate and consistent with related species: females grow deeper-bellied and broader than males, particularly when gravid, and are generally less vividly coloured. Males are slimmer and somewhat more intensely patterned, especially during the breeding season.
Habitat
The Nilgiri danio is a strict specialist of cold, fast, highly oxygenated upland streams. Its entire known distribution falls within tributaries of the Bhavani river system — specifically the Pykara, Avalanche and Kaity streams — in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu at elevations typically above 1,2625 ft. These are cool montane watercourses with rocky and gravel substrates, high dissolved oxygen, and clear water flowing through shola forest and grassland.
SeriouslyFish records a preferred temperature range of 61–75 °F, with an optimum around 77 °F — figures that reflect the cool altitudinal conditions of these streams rather than the warmer lowland waters typical of many tropical danios. pH falls in the soft to near-neutral range (6.0–7.5), and the water is lightly mineralised. The species is benthopelagic, spending time in the water column and near the substrate in the current.
This narrow ecological envelope — cool, clear, fast, high-elevation — leaves D. neilgherriensis with almost no buffer against changes in water temperature, flow regime or catchment integrity. It is tied to a handful of small streams on a single hill range.
Feeding
Devario neilgherriensis is an opportunistic micropredator in the wild, feeding on the invertebrate drift common to fast hill streams: aquatic and terrestrial insects, insect larvae, and small crustaceans. The active, fast-moving lifestyle of a current-adapted Devario suits a fish that intercepts prey carried by the current as much as actively hunts it.
In the rare captive settings where the species has been maintained, it accepts small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, bloodworm and Artemia nauplii — without difficulty, as recorded by SeriouslyFish. Given the fast, cold-stream origins of the species, a varied diet emphasising live or frozen invertebrate-based foods is likely to maintain best condition.
Mating
Like all danios, Devario neilgherriensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specialised pair bond forms; spawning is a brief, chase-driven event in which a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in a series of short presses. The eggs receive no further attention from either parent.
In the wild, spawning likely corresponds to warmer spells or the onset of the monsoon rains, when rising water temperatures and increased flow stimulate breeding activity. The cool baseline temperature of Nilgiri hill streams means any seasonal warming cue would be subtle by comparison with lowland congeners.
Breeding
Devario neilgherriensis is virtually absent from the aquarium trade and there are no widely documented captive breeding accounts in the hobby literature. By analogy with related Devario species, the breeding mode is egg-scattering: adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs are deposited over fine-leaved plants, moss, roots or gravel, and no parental care is provided. Adults will readily consume their own eggs if given the opportunity, so removal of the adults immediately after spawning is standard practice when breeding related species.
The cool preferred temperature range (61–75 °F) would need to be respected in any captive breeding attempt. Conditioning the fish on live and frozen foods, providing fine-leaved planting or spawning mops, and maintaining pristine, well-oxygenated water are all prerequisites for success with montane hill-stream danios of this type. Hatchlings would be expected to follow the typical danio pattern — hatching in two to three days and becoming free-swimming a few days later.
In the aquarium
The Nilgiri danio is, in practice, virtually unobtainable in the aquarium trade, and SeriouslyFish explicitly notes its near-absence from the hobby. Its Endangered status and narrow endemic range make wild collection ethically and logistically problematic; no established captive-bred supply exists.
For any keeper who does obtain the species, the demands of a cool montane hill-stream fish must be taken seriously. A long, well-filtered aquarium with strong current and very high dissolved oxygen is essential — a standard tropical community tank will not suffice. Temperature should be maintained in the 61–75 °F range, with pH kept around 6.0–7.5 and water changed regularly to maintain pristine quality. As a shoaling species it should be kept in groups of six or more. Feeding on small live and frozen foods replicates the invertebrate diet of its native streams. The species represents a significant aquarist responsibility given its conservation status.
Conservation
Devario neilgherriensis is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 12 September 2010). The assessment reflects the species' extremely restricted range — confined to the Pykara, Avalanche and Kaity streams in the Nilgiri Hills — and the suite of threats bearing on that landscape. The Nilgiri Hills are one of the most heavily pressured montane regions in peninsular India: plantation agriculture (tea, eucalyptus, wattle) has replaced large areas of native shola forest that once moderated the hydrology of small streams; water extraction for irrigation and domestic supply has reduced flows; and stream siltation from eroding soils degrades the rocky substrate the species depends on.
The narrowness of the species' range means that any significant degradation of even one of the three known streams could eliminate a substantial portion of the global population. A taxonomic study published in the Journal of Ichthyology in 2024 reconfirmed the species' validity and distinct status, underscoring the importance of protecting it as a recognisable conservation unit.
No targeted recovery plan is known to be in place. Given the species' near-absence from captivity, in-situ habitat protection in the Nilgiri watershed — already partly covered by the Mukurthi National Park catchment — is the primary conservation lever available.
