Esomus thermoicos is a slender, surface-oriented cyprinid of southern India and Sri Lanka — one of several "flying barbs" whose enlarged pectoral fins allow brief gliding leaps above the waterline when startled. A fish of ponds, muddy pools, slow streams and monsoon-flooded margins rather than swift currents, it occupies much the same warm, still-water niche that its congener Esomus danrica holds farther north, and it shares that species' adaptability to degraded, turbid habitats. Reaching around 3–5 in in total length, it is larger than most of the hobbyist danios but retains the characteristic Esomus build: a tapered, almost pike-like snout, long maxillary barbels, and an abruptly forked tail set on a muscular, compressed body built for fast surface bursts.

Taxonomy & naming

Esomus thermoicos was described by Valenciennes in 1842, originally placed in the broad wastebasket genus of its era before being established in Esomus — a small genus of South and Southeast Asian cyprinids collectively known as flying barbs. The genus is distinguished from danios and rasboras by the pair of unusually long maxillary barbels (often reaching the pectoral-fin base or beyond) and the enlarged, wing-like pectoral fins that give the group its common name.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid names in the group. Esomus sits within the family Cyprinidae and is broadly allied with the danionin fishes — danios, rasboras and their relatives — and shares with them the surface-schooling, egg-scattering life history. The species epithet thermoicos is from the Greek thermos (warm) and oikos (house, home), referring to the warm, still waters the species favours.

Morphology

Esomus thermoicos is a moderately large flying barb, reaching a recorded maximum of about 5 in total length (FishBase), with a typical adult size around 3 in. The body is slender and laterally compressed, with a sharply pointed snout and a subterminal to slightly superior mouth angled toward the surface. The defining Esomus traits are immediately apparent: two pairs of barbels, of which the maxillary pair are conspicuously long, projecting well behind the head, and broad, rounded pectoral fins that — when spread in a leap — create the brief glide that gives flying barbs their name.

Coloration is relatively subdued: a silvery olive-green back shading to pale silver on the flanks and white on the belly, often with a faint lateral stripe catching the light. The fins are clear to faintly yellowish. Males tend to be slimmer than females; ripe females become noticeably deeper-bellied as they fill with eggs.

Habitat

The species is native to southern India and Sri Lanka, where it inhabits ponds, slow-moving streams, ditches and muddy seasonal pools. FishBase records it as more common in muddy pools than in flowing water — a preference shared across the genus for still and slow waters with soft substrates and some marginal vegetation rather than clear, fast-running streams. Occurrence data in GBIF confirm distribution across the South Asian range without records outside the region.

Water conditions in these habitats are warm and the chemistry is typically soft to moderately hard and close to neutral, reflecting the laterite and mixed-geology drainages of peninsular India and the lowland plains and wet zone of Sri Lanka. Like most Esomus, this species is predominantly a surface and upper-water-column fish, where its slightly upturned mouth and forward-pointing eyes are well-adapted to intercepting prey at the air-water interface.

Feeding

Esomus thermoicos is an opportunistic omnivore with a predatory bias toward small invertebrates. In the wild it feeds chiefly at and just below the surface, taking aquatic and terrestrial insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, worms and other invertebrates that fall onto or swim near the water's surface. Algae and organic detritus supplement the diet when prey is scarce.

The upturned mouth and highly mobile jaw are suited to snatching items from the surface film; the fish also pursues prey actively through the upper water column. In the aquarium, congeneric flying barbs accept dried flakes and small pellets readily, with live or frozen daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp providing the enrichment needed to maintain condition and natural colour.

Mating

Like all members of the danionin alliance, Esomus thermoicos is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no pair bond and no parental involvement after spawning. Breeding activity is strongly correlated with rising temperatures and water levels — the onset of the monsoon season triggers spawning in the wild as fish move into newly flooded, vegetated shallows.

Courtship follows the typical cyprinid pattern: one or more males pursue a gravid female actively through vegetation and open water, driving her and pressing close until eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The adhesive eggs fall among plants or settle on the substrate, and the adults take no further interest in them — indeed they will consume eggs given the opportunity.

Breeding

Breeding has not been widely reported in the aquarium for this species specifically, though congeneric flying barbs such as Esomus danrica are known to spawn under aquarium conditions when well conditioned. By analogy with the genus, a separate, shallow spawning tank with fine-leaved plants, a clump of java moss or a mesh bottom is the standard approach: it allows the adhesive eggs to fall out of reach of the parents before they can be eaten.

A group of well-fed adults is introduced to the spawning tank with a slight temperature rise to simulate monsoon conditions; spawning typically occurs early in the morning. After spawning the adults should be removed. Eggs hatch within two to three days, and the fry become free-swimming a few days later, at which point they accept infusoria, green water and subsequently newly hatched brine shrimp. Growth is steady at warm temperatures.

In the aquarium

Esomus thermoicos is not common in the hobby and is rarely encountered outside specialist collections, but it is an interesting and capable aquarium fish for those who find it. Its larger size — up to 4.5–5 in — requires a longer, well-covered tank: flying barbs are accomplished leapers and will exploit any gap in the lid. A tight-fitting cover is non-negotiable.

The species does best in groups of six or more, in a spacious tank (at least 39.5 in) with plenty of open surface swimming space, gentle filtration, some floating or tall marginal plants, and warm water in the range of approximately 68–79 °F with a pH of 6–8 and soft to moderately hard water, based on the habitat and the chemistry recorded for congeneric species. It is a fast, active surface fish and is best combined with robust, similarly sized companions rather than slow or timid species. Feeding is straightforward: it accepts quality dried foods readily and is kept in best condition with regular live or frozen invertebrate supplements.

Conservation

Esomus thermoicos is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 11 August 2019), reflecting a distribution broad enough across southern India and Sri Lanka that no range-wide population collapse has been detected. However, the assessment notes that habitat loss is a recognised threat — the ponds, irrigation channels, seasonal pools and slow-stream margins that the species favours are among the most heavily impacted freshwater habitats in peninsular India and Sri Lanka, under pressure from agriculture, drainage, water extraction, pollution and urban expansion.

As with many South Asian lowland cyprinids, its LC status reflects a large baseline range rather than confirmed population stability, and continued monitoring of the species across its range is warranted as wetland degradation accelerates in both countries.
