Devario pullatus is a recently described danionid minnow from the Nam Ngiep watershed of central Laos, a tributary system of the Mekong drainage. Named by Kottelat in 2020 alongside the closely related D. subviridis, it is distinguished by a bold dark brown stripe running from the gill opening to the base of the caudal fin — a pattern the epithet pullatus captures in Latin, meaning 'clothed in dark or soiled garments, in mourning.' Little studied in the hobby and not yet evaluated by the IUCN, it remains one of the many Mekong-system danios that science is still getting to know.

Taxonomy & naming

Devario pullatus was formally described by Maurice Kottelat in 2020 in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters, published by Friedrich Pfeil Verlag. The original paper treated two new species simultaneously — D. pullatus and D. subviridis — both from the Nam Ngiep watershed in Laos, part of the broader Mekong drainage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for valid names and records the combination as Devario pullatus Kottelat, 2020.

The genus Devario is a diverse group of larger danionid minnows distributed across South and Southeast Asia, sharing the family Danionidae and the subfamily Danioninae with the true danios (genus Danio). Devario species tend to be larger and more laterally compressed than Danio, and several are familiar in the hobby as 'giant danios.' D. pullatus belongs squarely in this genus based on its morphology and geographic position in mainland Southeast Asia.

No synonyms or prior combinations exist for this species, which has only been known to science since 2020. It has not yet received an established common name in the English-language hobby literature.

Morphology

The defining external feature of Devario pullatus is a prominent dark brown longitudinal stripe running from the gill cover along the flank to the base of the caudal fin — the character from which its Latin name derives. This stripe sets it apart from the closely related D. subviridis, which was described in the same paper and differs in coloration.

Males exhibit epidermal tubercles on the pectoral fins, a feature widespread among danionid males and associated with courtship and competitive interactions. As in most Devario, the body is elongate and laterally compressed, with the upturned mouth typical of surface- and mid-water-oriented danionids.

Detailed meristic data (fin-ray and scale counts) are available in Kottelat's 2020 original description. Maximum size in the wild has not been widely reported for this species, but based on its placement within the genus Devario, it is expected to fall within the typical range for mid-sized danionids.

Habitat

Devario pullatus is known from the Nam Ngiep watershed, a river system that drains into the Nam Ngum, itself a major left-bank tributary of the middle Mekong in central Laos. The Nam Ngiep flows through montane and hilly terrain before reaching the Laotian lowlands, and related Devario species throughout mainland Southeast Asia occupy clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams and rivers in forested hill and plateau country.

Based on the ecology of closely related Devario species from similar Mekong-system habitats, D. pullatus almost certainly inhabits clear, oxygen-rich, moderate-to-fast-flowing streams over rocky or gravelly substrate — the kind of biotope that supports well-oxygenated conditions year-round. Water parameters appropriate for the genus in this region are typically pH 6.0–8.0 and temperatures in the range 70–79 °F, reflecting the cooler, well-circulated stream environments of the Laotian interior.

Specific field data on water chemistry and microhabitat use at the type locality have not been widely published, and the species remains poorly known ecologically.

Feeding

No species-specific dietary studies have been published for Devario pullatus. As with other members of the genus, it is presumed to be a generalist omnivore and opportunistic invertebrate feeder, taking small aquatic and terrestrial insects, crustaceans and other invertebrates from the surface and water column, supplemented with plant material and detritus.

In the aquarium, Devario species accept a wide range of foods including quality dry flakes and pellets, live and frozen invertebrates such as daphnia, mosquito larvae and bloodworm, and blanched plant matter. Varied feeding maintains condition and supports the bold patterning that characterises the genus.

Mating

Devario pullatus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner of all danionid minnows. No specific spawning studies exist for this species, but the reproductive strategy of the genus is well established: a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over substrate, and the pair releases eggs and milt together in brief, rapid bursts. There is no pair bond, no nest construction, and no parental care of any kind — adults will consume eggs given the opportunity.

Male D. pullatus, like males of most Devario, develop epidermal tubercles on the pectoral fins during the breeding season, likely serving a role in tactile stimulation and competition during courtship. Spawning in the wild is tied to seasonal cues — temperature, rainfall and water level — that correspond to the monsoon cycle of mainland Southeast Asia.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Devario pullatus has not been formally documented, and the species is not established in the hobby. Based on the well-known breeding behaviour of related Devario species, the approach used for giant danios generally would apply: a separate, well-planted breeding vessel or one fitted with a mesh or marble layer to protect eggs from immediate predation, a well-conditioned group of adults, and a modest water change with a slight temperature rise to trigger spawning at dawn.

Eggs are adhesive to slightly adhesive and are scattered over fine-leaved plants, moss or the substrate, after which adults should be removed to prevent egg predation. Hatching typically occurs within two to three days at appropriate temperatures, and free-swimming fry will accept infusoria and then newly hatched brine shrimp. These are the broad parameters derived from genus-level knowledge; species-specific breeding details remain unrecorded.

In the aquarium

Devario pullatus is not currently available in the hobby trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside of specialist collections or the occasional import of Laotian stream fish. As a newly described species from a remote Mekong-system watershed, it remains a fish of scientific interest rather than an aquarium staple.

Should it become available, the care requirements can be inferred from closely allied species such as D. devario and D. aequipinnatus: a spacious, longer aquarium with a good current and high dissolved oxygen, a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (6.5–8.0), temperatures in the 70–79 °F range, and the company of conspecifics or other robust stream fish. Like all Devario it is an active, fast-swimming shoaler that performs best in groups. Water quality must be high — Mekong-system hill-stream fishes are intolerant of organic pollution, poor aeration, or stagnant conditions.

Conservation

Devario pullatus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of 2026. The species was only described in 2020, and many recently described, narrow-range Mekong-basin fishes remain unevaluated for years after their formal description.

The Nam Ngiep watershed, where D. pullatus was collected, has been subject to significant hydrological alteration. The Nam Ngiep 1 hydropower dam, completed in the mid-2010s, created a large reservoir in the main stem of the Nam Ngiep and altered flow regimes, sediment dynamics and connectivity across the system. Stream-dependent fishes with restricted ranges in tributary watersheds are among the taxa most vulnerable to such infrastructure. Deforestation and agricultural expansion in the Laotian interior also pose ongoing threats to the clear, well-oxygenated stream conditions this species requires.

Given its apparently restricted known range, the pace of watershed development in central Laos, and the general vulnerability of single-locality danionids to habitat modification, D. pullatus merits attention in any future regional freshwater fish assessments. Its conservation status currently remains Not Evaluated (NE).
