Taxonomy & naming
Devario quangbinhensis was originally described as Chela quangbinhensis by Nguyen, Le & Nguyen in 1999, collected from streams at Phong Nha in Quảng Bình Province, Vietnam. The original placement in Chela was subsequently revised: the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — the authority for valid names) records the current valid combination as Devario quangbinhensis (Nguyen, Le & Nguyen, 1999), the parenthetical authority marking the transfer from Chela. GBIF likewise lists the valid name as Devario quangbinhensis with Chela quangbinhensis as the basionym.
Devario is a large genus of medium-to-large danionid cyprinids distributed across South and Southeast Asia, the 'giant danios' group. The genus has grown substantially through revision as species formerly scattered across Chela, Danio and related genera were reassigned on molecular and morphological grounds. The species epithet quangbinhensis is a Latin toponym referring to Quảng Bình Province, the type locality.
Morphology
Adult males of Devario quangbinhensis reach approximately 3.5 in standard length (SL), a size consistent with the larger members of the genus Devario and placing it firmly among the giant danios. As with other Devario, the body is elongate and laterally compressed with a pointed snout and a mouth suited to a near-surface or mid-water feeding strategy.
Detailed morphological descriptions beyond size are not widely available in accessible literature, which reflects the species' extremely limited study since its description in 1999. Published data come primarily from the type series; no detailed colour description or comprehensive meristic data have been reported in English-language secondary sources.
Habitat
Devario quangbinhensis is known from limestone mountain streams within Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park (type locality: Phong Nha, Kebang, approximately 17°20'N, 106°09'E), a UNESCO World Heritage site celebrated for its karst cave systems and high biodiversity. The streams here flow over and through limestone formations, producing water chemistry that ranges from soft to moderately hard and from near-neutral to mildly alkaline.
Hydrochemical data from the Phong Nha karst system, reported by Springer et al. (2022), document pH ranging from 6.15 to 8.48, conductance from 65 to 421 μS/cm, and water temperatures from approximately 64–83 °F. Calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate are the dominant ions, a signature of carbonate-rock dissolution typical of limestone drainages. The streams are clear, relatively well-oxygenated, and subject to seasonal variation in flow.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study of Devario quangbinhensis has been published. As a member of the genus Devario, it is expected to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking invertebrates from the water column and surface — insects, small crustaceans, and aquatic larvae — with plant material and detritus contributing a smaller proportion of the diet. The elongate body and subterminal-to-terminal mouth are consistent with a mid-water feeding strategy typical of the group.
In any captive setting this species would almost certainly accept a broad diet of live, frozen, and prepared foods without difficulty, as is standard for Devario. That said, it has not established itself in the ornamental fish trade, so aquarium feeding observations are essentially absent from the record.
Mating
No direct observations of courtship in Devario quangbinhensis have been published. As a danionid, it is expected to follow the characteristic danio mating pattern: egg-scattering with no parental care. Spawning is triggered by seasonal cues — likely rising water temperature and increased flow associated with the monsoonal wet season in north-central Vietnam — with ripe males pursuing gravid females through the water column or among submerged vegetation.
There is no pair bond, no territory, and no nest of any kind. Adults scatter eggs and abandon them immediately. As with other Devario, adults would readily consume their own eggs if given the opportunity.
Breeding
Devario quangbinhensis reproduces by egg-scattering over plants, substrate, or gravel, with no parental care beyond the act of spawning. Eggs are adhesive or weakly adhesive and are left to develop and hatch without attendance. This is the universal breeding strategy of the danionid cyprinids and can be assumed for this species with high confidence.
No captive breeding accounts are on record, and the species is not commercially bred. Water parameters within the documented range for the Phong Nha karst system — soft to moderately hard, near-neutral, and at temperatures in the 64–79 °F range — would represent a reasonable starting point for any future breeding attempt, replicating the clear, well-oxygenated limestone stream conditions of the type locality.
In the aquarium
Devario quangbinhensis is effectively unknown in the ornamental fish trade and is not available through standard retail channels. It has never been established in the hobby, and no husbandry experience has been accumulated or published. Given its limestone stream origin, the fish would presumably require clear, well-oxygenated water in the soft-to-moderately-hard range, near-neutral pH, and temperatures in the upper teens to mid-twenties Celsius — conditions broadly similar to other cool hill-stream Devario.
Like all Devario, it would be expected to thrive in a long, well-filtered aquarium with open swimming space, moderate current, and a shoal of its own kind. At a maximum size of around 3.5 in SL it is a medium-sized danionid — larger than the common giant danio (Devario aequipinnatus) to some extent — and would require aquarium space accordingly. In the absence of any trade presence, this information is necessarily theoretical.
Conservation
Devario quangbinhensis is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List. The DD listing reflects the absence of population survey data and abundance estimates rather than a confirmed absence of threat; its status as a single-locality endemic concentrated within one protected-area drainage is itself a flag for potential vulnerability.
The species' entire known range falls within Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, which provides a degree of habitat protection. However, karst stream ecosystems are sensitive to changes in groundwater chemistry, deforestation in the catchment, and hydrological disruption. The broader north-central Vietnamese highland region faces ongoing pressure from infrastructure development, agricultural expansion, and tourism growth. Until dedicated surveys establish the species' population size, range boundaries, and response to these pressures, its conservation status cannot be formally assessed beyond Data Deficient.
