Taxonomy & naming
Devario regina was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1934, based on material from Nakon Sritamarat — the modern Nakhon Si Thammarat — in peninsular southern Thailand. Fowler originally placed it in the genus Danio, and the old combination Danio regina Fowler, 1934 still appears in older literature and some databases. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authoritative registry for valid fish names, records the current valid combination as Devario regina (Fowler, 1934), with the parenthetical authority marking its transfer out of Danio.
The genus Devario encompasses the larger, more elongate danios of South and Southeast Asia, sometimes informally grouped as the 'giant danios' to distinguish them from the smaller Danio species such as zebrafish and celestial pearls. Devario was for a time treated as a subgenus of Danio, but modern usage — including that of the Catalog of Fishes — maintains Devario as a distinct genus. The species belongs to a broader assemblage of rheophilic Devario populating the mainland Southeast Asian hill-stream fauna, a group that has been incompletely revised and whose inter-species relationships remain an area of active research. The name Devario suvatti is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Devario regina is a moderately large, laterally compressed danio, recorded to a maximum total length of 4.5 in, though most specimens in collections and the aquarium trade are somewhat smaller. The body is elongate and torpedo-shaped, well suited to life in fast water, with a slightly upturned mouth indicating a surface-to-midwater feeding orientation and a pair of short barbels flanking the upper lip.
Coloration is characteristic of the genus: a background of silver to pale gold on the flanks, overlaid with a series of blue-green horizontal stripes or bands running from behind the operculum to the caudal fin base. The fins are largely hyaline with faint pigmentation. Sexual dimorphism is modest in this species; females are noticeably deeper-bodied than males, especially when gravid, while males tend toward a slimmer profile with somewhat more intense flank coloration during breeding condition. The overall impression is of a bright, athletic, torpedo-built fish with the clean lines shared across the larger Devario.
Habitat
The queen danio is a fish of clear, fast-running, well-oxygenated waters. Its range spans peninsular Thailand, Myanmar, northwestern Malaya and the Mekong basin, with the type locality in hilly southern Thailand. Within these regions it inhabits submontane and hill-stream environments: shallow reaches over gravel and rock substrate, where current is appreciable and the water is cool relative to lowland rivers and clear enough to support abundant benthic and aerial invertebrate prey.
Field observations and FishBase data confirm a preference for rapid-running mountain streams with sandy to gravelly bottoms and marginal riparian vegetation. Water chemistry reflects the underlying geology of these upland drainages: soft to moderately hard (hardness 36–268 ppm), near-neutral to slightly acidic pH (5.5–7.5), and temperatures in the range 68–79 °F — cooler than lowland Southeast Asian waters but warmer than the montane streams of the Western Ghats. The combination of current, oxygen saturation, and structural complexity of rock and gravel provides both the rheophilic lifestyle this species demands and the invertebrate food base on which it depends.
Feeding
In the wild Devario regina is an insectivorous predator of the water surface and midwater column. Its upturned mouth and agile, fast-swimming build are adaptations for intercepting drifting invertebrates in current — aquatic insect larvae, pupae, and adult insects that fall to the surface are the principal prey, supplemented by small crustaceans and other invertebrates associated with the gravel and rock habitats it frequents.
In the aquarium the species transfers readily to prepared and frozen foods. High-quality flake and small pellets form a suitable staple, while frozen or live bloodworm, Daphnia and Artemia are valuable supplements that maintain condition, coloration and the heightened activity associated with hunting. Like most active danios it feeds eagerly and quickly, and in mixed-species tanks it is important to ensure that slower or more reclusive tankmates receive adequate food.
Mating
Devario regina is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, consistent with the reproductive strategy characteristic of virtually all danios and their close allies. There is no pair bond, no nest construction and no parental involvement beyond the act of spawning itself. Courtship is active and energetic: a conditioned male pursues a gravid female vigorously through the water column and among vegetation, driving her until the pair aligns briefly and releases eggs and milt simultaneously.
Spawning is typically triggered by environmental cues — slight warming, the introduction of fresh water, or an increase in photoperiod — that mimic the onset of the monsoon or the seasonal rise in hill-stream temperatures that precedes natural breeding in mainland Southeast Asia. A ripe female may release eggs in multiple brief bursts during a single spawning session, with several males competing to fertilise each batch.
Breeding
In the aquarium Devario regina can be bred using the standard methods developed for the genus. A separate spawning tank of moderate size fitted with fine-leaved plants, spawning mops or a mesh grid over the base is effective: the adhesive eggs, once scattered over plants and substrate, need to fall or sink out of easy reach of the adults, which will consume them readily. Pairs or small groups of well-conditioned fish are introduced, and spawning generally follows within a day or two of the female being visibly gravid.
The eggs hatch in approximately 24–36 hours at typical tropical temperatures, producing small, initially inactive larvae that absorb their yolk sac over the following day or two before becoming free-swimming. First foods of infusoria or commercial fry preparations are appropriate at this stage, transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp as the fry grow. Adults should be removed promptly after spawning. Brood sizes are moderate to large for a fish of this size; regular feeding with live or frozen prey items keeps the parent fish in breeding condition throughout the warm season.
In the aquarium
The queen danio is an active, sociable fish that does best in a spacious aquarium with substantial open swimming volume and a reasonable current — a powerhead or spray-bar return directed along the tank length suits its rheophilic nature. A tank of 35.5 in or more in length is appropriate for a school of six or more, which is the minimum for this shoaling species to behave naturally and display its best social dynamics. Aquascaping with some fine-leaved planting and river-gravel substrate complements the species' hill-stream origins without obstructing the open midwater it uses most.
Water parameters should reflect its hill-stream background: temperatures of 68–79 °F, pH 5.5–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. It is a robust fish within these bounds and does not require extreme soft water, but it is less suited to warm, hard, alkaline conditions than some more adaptable cyprinids. Compatible tankmates are active, similarly sized species that can hold their own in moderate current; slow or delicate fishes may be stressed by the queen danio's pace and energy. It poses no threat to most fish but should not be housed with very small or fragile species.
Conservation
Devario regina is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment), reflecting a relatively wide distribution across mainland Southeast Asia and no evidence of a significant population-level decline. Its range spans several countries and multiple drainage systems within the Indochina region, and it is associated with hill-stream habitats that, while subject to regional pressures, are not uniformly degraded across its range.
Nonetheless, the clear, fast hill streams of peninsular Thailand, Myanmar and the Malay Peninsula face increasing pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, sedimentation, and water abstraction. Species with a rheophilic, clean-water dependency are generally more sensitive to these changes than generalists of slow lowland waters. Ongoing monitoring of Southeast Asian freshwater fish communities is important to detect any range contractions in species like Devario regina before they become conservation concerns.
