Devario salmonatus is a small, poorly known danionid endemic to the Xe Nam Noy drainage on the Bolaven Plateau of southern Laos — a single river system draining into the Mekong. Described originally as Danio salmonata and later transferred to Devario, it reaches about 2 in standard length and is presumed to inhabit the clear, fast-running hill streams typical of its genus. So little has been documented about this species in the wild or the aquarium that the IUCN classes it as Data Deficient, its restricted single-basin range making any future assessment especially sensitive to habitat change on the plateau.

Taxonomy & naming

Devario salmonatus was described by Kottelat in 2000, originally as Danio salmonata, from material collected at Huay Makchan-Gnai in the Xe Nam Noy basin south of Ban Taut, Champasak Province, Laos (approximately 15°04'N, 106°32'E). The parenthetical authority in its current name — (Kottelat, 2000) — reflects the subsequent transfer from Danio to Devario. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid names; the valid combination is Devario salmonatus.

Devario is a genus of larger danionids distributed across South and Southeast Asia, characterised by a more robust build and greater adult size than the true danios of genus Danio. The genus has been revised repeatedly as molecular and morphological studies have clarified relationships within the family Danionidae, and several species formerly placed in Danio have been moved into Devario. No common name has been established for this species in the aquarium hobby or scientific literature.

Morphology

Devario salmonatus reaches a maximum recorded length of 2 in standard length (SL) — small for the genus, which includes species exceeding 4 in. Beyond size, detailed morphological data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature; the original description by Kottelat provides the primary diagnostic characters.

Based on congeners, genus Devario members are generally elongate and laterally compressed with a slightly upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding, prominent eyes, and a slender caudal peduncle. Pattern details distinguishing D. salmonatus from sympatric or allopatric congeners are given in the original description but are not reproduced in the secondary sources available for this account. Data are too sparse to describe colour pattern or fin details here with confidence.

Habitat

The type locality — Huay Makchan-Gnai in the Xe Nam Noy basin — sits on the Bolaven Plateau, a basalt highland in Champasak Province, southern Laos, draining into the Mekong river system. Congeners in genus Devario typically occupy clear, fast-flowing hill streams and rivers with moderate gradient, preferring well-oxygenated reaches with mixed substrates. Water chemistry parameters for D. salmonatus have not been formally measured; by analogy with related Mekong-system Devario species and the Bolaven Plateau environment, conditions are likely near-neutral in pH (roughly 6.5–7.5), moderate in hardness, and cooler than lowland tropical rivers. The species is considered a single-basin endemic with an extremely limited known range.

Feeding

No specific dietary data have been published for Devario salmonatus. Across the genus, Devario species are opportunistic omnivores and micropredators, taking small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, fallen insects — along with algal material and organic detritus. The upturned mouth typical of danionids favours surface and sub-surface feeding.

In an aquarium context, specimens can be expected to accept a broad range of foods matching the genus pattern: quality dried flakes or small pellets, supplemented with live or frozen daphnia, bloodworm and small brine shrimp to maintain condition. Because specific wild-diet studies have not been conducted for this species, care notes remain inferred from genus-level data.

Mating

Devario salmonatus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, consistent with all known Devario and the broader danionid family. There is no nest construction, no pair bond, and no parental care of any kind. Courtship follows the danionid pattern: a ripe male closely pursues a gravid female through aquatic vegetation or over substrate, and the pair release eggs and milt together in brief, close contact.

Spawning in wild congeners is often linked to seasonal conditions — rising water temperatures, increased flow or rainfall — that signal appropriate conditions for the eggs and larvae. For D. salmonatus specifically, no wild spawning observations have been recorded in the literature available for this account.

Breeding

No captive breeding accounts for Devario salmonatus are available in the hobby or scientific literature; the species is essentially absent from the aquarium trade. By genus analogy, breeding would follow standard danionid egg-scattering protocol: the female scatters adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, moss, or gravel substrate, which the adults do not guard and will readily consume if given access.

A dedicated spawning setup for related Devario would typically use a shallow, well-planted tank with a fine mesh or plant cover to protect eggs from the parents; the adults are removed after spawning. Eggs in congeners hatch in roughly two to three days at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming larvae emerging a few days later. Until the species becomes available in captivity and breeding trials are conducted, all husbandry notes for D. salmonatus remain extrapolated from close relatives.

Devario salmonatus is not established in the aquarium hobby and is unlikely to be encountered outside specialist collections or research contexts. Its extremely restricted range and single-basin endemism mean it has almost certainly never entered commercial trade.

Were specimens to become available, care requirements by genus analogy would centre on clean, well-oxygenated, moderately flowing water with a near-neutral pH and cool-to-moderate temperatures reflecting the upland Bolaven Plateau origin. A spacious tank with ample horizontal swimming room, planted sides and open central space, and robust filtration producing moderate current would suit the genus. Social housing in groups is strongly preferred across all danionids. Data are too sparse to give precise temperature or hardness targets; the genus Devario reference range (roughly 68–79 °F, pH 6.5–7.5) provides a reasonable starting point.

Conservation

Devario salmonatus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (2022.2 assessment), reflecting the near-complete absence of population, ecology and trend data for this single-basin endemic. Its known range is confined to the Xe Nam Noy drainage on the Bolaven Plateau — an extremely small geographic footprint that makes any localised habitat change potentially catastrophic for the species.

The Bolaven Plateau faces ongoing pressure from agricultural expansion (coffee and rubber plantations), hydropower development on the Mekong and its tributaries, and broader land-use change in southern Laos. A species with such a narrow range and no known captive population has no buffer against these pressures. Reclassification to a threatened category may be warranted once systematic survey work establishes the true extent of occurrence and the condition of its stream habitat.
