Taxonomy & naming
Devario subviridis was described by Maurice Kottelat in 2020 in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters, together with D. pullatus, as two new minnow species from Laos. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records the valid combination as Devario subviridis Kottelat, 2020.
The genus Devario (family Danionidae, formerly treated as a subfamily of Cyprinidae) encompasses the giant danios and their relatives — larger-bodied, schooling danionins distributed across South and Southeast Asia from the Indian subcontinent through Indochina. The genus was long understudied; as molecular and morphological work has accumulated, numerous new species have been elevated or described, particularly from Myanmar, Laos and Thailand. D. subviridis is one such newly recognised species, and no aquarium trade name has yet been established for it.
The species epithet subviridis is Latin for 'somewhat greenish' or 'faintly green', and refers to the live colouration of the fish — a naming convention Kottelat applied to capture the subtle metallic-green tones visible in freshly caught specimens.
Morphology
Devario subviridis has not yet been described in detail in the popular or aquarium literature; morphological data here derives from the original description. Like other Devario, it is presumed to be a moderately elongate, laterally compressed cyprinid with the characteristic large eyes, slightly upturned mouth and two pairs of barbels typical of the genus.
The species epithet directly references its colouration: live specimens display a greenish or faintly iridescent green tone along the flanks, likely arising from thin-film structural coloration over a silvery base, as seen in related Devario species. Precise measurements (standard length, fin ray counts, lateral line scale counts) are recorded in the original description but have not yet been widely synthesised in secondary sources.
Sexual dimorphism has not been specifically noted for D. subviridis; across the genus, females tend to be deeper-bodied and carry more visible abdominal mass when gravid, while males are slimmer and more active during courtship — a pattern likely shared here.
Habitat
Devario subviridis is native to Laos, where it inhabits the freshwater streams and rivers of the Mekong basin drainage. The species occupies the kind of clear, fast-moving hill streams and tributaries typical of Devario across mainland Southeast Asia — well-oxygenated, relatively shallow water with rocky or gravel substrates, some riparian vegetation and strong seasonal variation in flow linked to the monsoon cycle.
Water chemistry data for D. subviridis specifically has not been published in accessible secondary sources, but conditions inferred from comparable Devario habitats in the Mekong system suggest near-neutral to slightly alkaline water (pH approximately 6.6–8.2), moderate to warm temperatures (75–95 °F in the warmest months, cooler in the dry season), and good dissolved oxygen levels consistent with flowing, unimpeded streams. The Mekong watershed's seasonal flood pulse strongly influences conditions in tributary streams throughout the year.
Feeding
No specific dietary study has been conducted on Devario subviridis. Like other Devario, it is almost certainly an opportunistic omnivore and micropredator in the wild, feeding on aquatic and terrestrial insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, filamentous algae and organic detritus taken from the water column and surface film.
In an aquarium setting, Devario species accept a wide range of prepared and live foods without difficulty. A varied diet of good-quality flake or small pellets, supplemented with frozen or live items such as daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp, suits this type of active, generalist feeder well and supports colour and condition.
Mating
Devario subviridis, like all members of the genus and family, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no pair bonding beyond the spawning act itself, and no parental care of any kind. In the wild, spawning is tied to the seasonal monsoon cycle, when rising water temperatures, increased flow and the flooding of shallow vegetated margins trigger breeding activity.
Courtship follows the danionin pattern: an active male pursues a gravid female through open water and vegetation, driving close alongside her. When the pair align, eggs and milt are released simultaneously; the eggs scatter into the substrate or among plant material, and both fish immediately move on. Adults will eat their own eggs if given the opportunity.
Breeding
Breeding Devario subviridis in captivity has not been specifically documented in the hobbyist literature, but the genus is generally straightforward to spawn using the methods established for related giant danios. A separate, shallow spawning tank fitted with a layer of fine-leaved plants, spawning mops or a substrate of marbles or mesh — allowing scattered eggs to fall out of the parents' reach — is the standard approach.
Conditioning adults on varied live and frozen foods, followed by a partial water change with slightly warmer water to mimic the onset of the monsoon, typically induces spawning at dawn. The adhesive eggs are scattered over plants and the substrate; adults must be removed immediately after spawning to prevent predation on the eggs. Eggs hatch in roughly 24–48 hours depending on temperature, and larvae become free-swimming a few days later, accepting infusoria and then newly hatched brine shrimp as first foods. Growth is rapid, as in other Devario.
In the aquarium
Devario subviridis is not yet established in the aquarium hobby as a trade species, and captive husbandry notes are necessarily extrapolated from closely related Devario. As a hill-stream danionin it requires clean, highly oxygenated water with a moderate current — poor water quality or low oxygen will quickly compromise its health. A tight-fitting lid is essential; Devario are powerful jumpers.
A group of at least six individuals is recommended to allow natural shoaling behaviour and reduce stress-related chasing of individual fish. A longer aquarium with open swimming space suits the genus's active, fast-moving character. Water parameters should reflect the Mekong hill-stream template: near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH, moderate hardness, and temperatures in the range of 75–82 °F. The diet is undemanding — good flake food supplemented with live and frozen invertebrates keeps these fish in excellent condition.
Conservation
Devario subviridis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species described in 2020, it is Not Evaluated. This is common for recently described Laotian endemics: the pace of taxonomic description in the Mekong region currently outstrips the capacity of conservation assessments to keep up.
The broader Mekong basin faces substantial and escalating pressure from hydroelectric dam construction — particularly on the mainstream Mekong and its tributaries — which fragments fish populations, alters seasonal flood pulses and degrades the hill-stream habitats on which species like D. subviridis depend. Agricultural expansion, deforestation and associated sedimentation further reduce water clarity and oxygen levels in tributary streams. Until a formal IUCN assessment is completed, the conservation status of D. subviridis remains unknown, and its range size and population trends have not been quantified.
