Devario yuensis is a slender, schooling cyprinid native to a narrow stretch of hill-stream country straddling the India–Myanmar border — the headwaters of the Lokchao River in Manipur and their drainage into the Chindwin basin. Known from no more than three localities, it is one of the least-studied members of the giant-danio group, and its restricted range in a region under mounting pressure from pollution, damming and logging has earned it a Vulnerable listing on the IUCN Red List. In its clear, fast-flowing native streams it shares the water column with other small cyprinids, chasing insects and small crustaceans in the bright current; in the aquarium it remains essentially unknown to the hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Devario yuensis was described by Arunkumar and Tombi Singh in 1998 from material collected in the Yu River system of Manipur, north-eastern India — a drainage that straddles the border with Myanmar. The species epithet yuensis references that river system. The original description placed the fish in the genus Danio (the old, broad sense of that name), and the combination Danio yuensis still appears in some older literature and databases; the current valid genus, following the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), is Devario. GBIF records this reclassification explicitly, and FishBase likewise carries the species under Devario yuensis.

The genus Devario — the giant danios — is a group of robust, active cyprinids centred on South and Southeast Asia. It was long lumped into a broad Danio by some authors and is consistently separated in modern treatments. Within Devario, yuensis belongs to a cluster of north-eastern Indian species with affinities to forms across the Myanmar border, though the intra-generic phylogeny remains incompletely resolved. No subspecies or colour variants have been described.

Morphology

Devario yuensis is a mid-sized member of the giant-danio group, reaching a maximum recorded total length of 3.5 in (TL) according to FishBase. It has the elongate, laterally compressed body typical of Devario — a forked tail, a subterminal mouth suited to mid-water and surface feeding, and the generally torpedo-shaped build of an active current-oriented schooling fish. The chromosome complement is 2n = 50, placing it in line with other Devario species.

Detailed colour description is not well-documented in the accessible literature for this species. No fixed ornamental strains or long-finned variants exist, as the fish has not entered mainstream aquaculture. Females of giant danios are characteristically deeper-bodied than males when gravid, a pattern expected in yuensis, though dimorphism data specific to this species are sparse.

Habitat

The species inhabits the headwaters and tributaries of the Lokchao River in Manipur, India, and related drainages flowing into the Chindwin basin in Myanmar. These are clear, fast-flowing hill streams and rivers typical of the upper Brahmaputra–Chindwin hill country — well-oxygenated, often cool to warm depending on season and altitude, and subject to monsoonal flooding that shifts flow volume and temperature markedly through the year.

FishBase records a natural pH range of 7.9–8.2 and notes the fish as tropical and pelagic in habit — occupying the open water column of its streams rather than bottom-hugging substrate. Temperature data from FishBase suggest natural conditions of around 81–95 °F in the warmer season, reflecting the lowland-to-foothill nature of the Manipur drainage, with cooler values in montane reaches. The habitat is described as benthic-to-pelagic, and the species was found at only three known localities, underlining how geographically restricted its range is.

Feeding

FishBase characterises Devario yuensis as feeding on small insects and copepods — a diet consistent with the opportunistic micropredator strategy shared by virtually all Devario species. In swift hill-stream habitats, small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates falling onto the surface, drifting in the current, or rising as emerging adults are the primary food sources. The subterminal to slightly upturned mouth suits active mid-water and surface feeding.

In captivity, giant danios of the Devario group readily accept live and frozen invertebrates such as daphnia, mosquito larvae, bloodworm and brine shrimp, as well as quality flakes and small pellets. There is no specific aquarium feeding information for yuensis itself, but its dietary needs may be assumed to match those of its close relatives in the genus.

Mating

Like all Devario and the broader danio group, Devario yuensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no pair bond, no nest construction, and no parental care of any kind. Spawning in the wild is tied to the rainy season — FishBase notes breeding in the monsoon period — when rising water levels, increased flow and a flush of invertebrate prey bring fish into condition.

Courtship follows the pattern typical of the group: one or more males pursue a gravid female through open water or among vegetation, pressing close alongside her before eggs and milt are released simultaneously in brief bursts. The adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs scatter onto plants, moss, gravel or substrate, where the adults pay them no further attention and will readily consume them if encountered.

Breeding

Devario yuensis has not been bred in the hobby to any documented degree, and no captive-breeding protocols have been published for the species. Based on the biology of the genus and the FishBase note that yuensis breeds during the rainy season, breeding cues in an aquarium setting would likely include a gradual temperature rise, increased water changes with slightly cooler fresh water to simulate seasonal inflow, and the availability of fine-leaved plants or mesh over the substrate to protect scattered eggs from the adults.

Females of this size class may release several hundred eggs per spawning session. The non-guarding nature of the species means eggs and subsequent larvae need to be separated from adults promptly. Larvae would be expected to hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures and become free-swimming a few days later, requiring infusoria-grade foods initially before progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp. These details are inferred from Devario biology in general; direct records for yuensis are absent from the literature reviewed.

In the aquarium

Devario yuensis is not an established aquarium fish. It is absent from the mainstream hobby trade and has not been commercially bred or widely kept. Its restricted wild range, threatened status and obscurity mean that specimens reaching hobbyists would almost certainly be wild-caught, which raises both legal and conservation considerations given its Vulnerable listing.

Should it become available, a set-up reflecting its hill-stream origins — a longer tank with strong filtration providing good flow and high oxygenation, a neutral-to-slightly-alkaline pH (consistent with the recorded natural pH of 7.9–8.2), moderately warm temperatures, and plenty of open swimming space — would be appropriate. As a schooling Devario reaching nearly 3.5 in, it would need a spacious tank and robust tankmates. Its diet of small invertebrates and prepared foods would be straightforward to meet in captivity.

Conservation

Devario yuensis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated January 23, 2010, under criteria B1ab(iii) — meaning the species qualifies on the basis of a limited extent of occurrence and ongoing decline in the quality of its habitat. The assessment records only three known localities, all within the Lokchao River system on the Manipur–Myanmar border and connected drainages into the Chindwin basin.

The primary threats listed are pollution, damming of river systems, and logging across this sensitive hill-stream catchment. North-eastern India and the adjacent Myanmar hills have seen significant deforestation, agricultural encroachment and infrastructure development in recent decades, all of which degrade the clear, fast-flowing stream habitat on which yuensis depends. Given its tiny known range and the ongoing pressures on the region's freshwater systems, the species remains a genuine conservation concern. No captive population or ex-situ insurance colony is known to exist.
