Rasbora ornata is a small, recently described cyprinid endemic to the hill streams of Manipur in north-eastern India, known from just two river systems — the Chatrickong and Lokchao Rivers, both tributaries of the Yu River draining into the Chindwin–Irrawaddy system of Myanmar. Described by Vishwanath and Laisram in 2005, it remains one of the least-studied members of the large and still-unsettled genus Rasbora. Its restricted range, combined with habitat destruction and collection pressure from the aquarium trade, has led the IUCN to assess it as Vulnerable.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora ornata was described by W. Vishwanath and Laisram in 2005 from specimens collected in Manipur, north-eastern India. The species epithet ornata is Latin for 'adorned' or 'ornate,' presumably referencing the fish's markings. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid combination Rasbora ornata Vishwanath & Laisram, 2005.

The genus Rasbora has been substantially revised over the past two decades. Kottelat and Witte (1999) erected Trigonostigma, Boraras and other genera that were carved out of a formerly broader Rasbora concept. Species now assigned to Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides were similarly removed. R. ornata remains within Rasbora sensu Catalog of Fishes and has not been moved to any of these segregate genera, though taxonomic work on the north-eastern Indian and Indochinese Rasbora fauna continues and its exact phylogenetic placement is not fully resolved.

Morphology

Rasbora ornata is a small, slender cyprinid typical of the genus — a streamlined, laterally compressed fish with a small upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding. The species epithet 'ornata' signals a distinctive colour pattern, though detailed published morphometric data for this recently described species remain sparse in the accessible literature.

As with most small Rasbora species, females are likely to be deeper-bodied and more rounded in the abdomen when gravid, while males remain noticeably slimmer and may show more vivid colouration during courtship. Precise standard-length maxima are not reliably documented in accessible sources; the species is a small rasbora consistent with the guild of hill-stream Rasbora from the region.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Chatrickong River and the Lokchao River in Manipur, India — both tributaries of the Yu River, which drains south into the Chindwin and ultimately the Irrawaddy system in Myanmar. This situates R. ornata in the hill-stream zone of the eastern Himalayan foothills, a region of clean, moderately fast-flowing, well-oxygenated waters running through forest.

Hill-stream Rasbora of this region typically inhabit clear, relatively soft, slightly acidic to neutral water with substrates of gravel, cobble and sand, often with overhanging riparian vegetation that provides food and shade. Water temperatures in Manipur's hill drainages follow a seasonal cycle, cooling in the dry winter months and warming during the monsoon season when flows rise and breeding is likely triggered. Given the extremely limited known range — two rivers in a single Indian state — the habitat window for this species is narrow, making local degradation highly consequential.

Feeding

Rasbora ornata is an omnivore in the manner typical of small Asian cyprinids. In its natural stream environment it feeds on zooplankton, small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates including insect larvae and fallen insects, and plant material or organic detritus. Its small mouth dictates a diet of fine-particled items taken from the water column and the surface.

In aquarium conditions the species accepts good-quality micro-pellets and small flake foods as a dietary base, with regular supplements of live or frozen small invertebrates — newly hatched brine shrimp, Daphnia, micro-worms and finely chopped bloodworm — which maintain condition and support spawning readiness. Frequent small feedings suit its feeding style better than large, infrequent meals.

Mating

Like all members of the genus Rasbora, R. ornata is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction and no parental care of any kind. Spawning is likely triggered by rising water temperatures and increased rainfall mimicking the monsoon onset, conditions that signal the availability of flooded vegetated shallows suitable for egg deposition.

Courtship follows the typical small-rasbora pattern: a ripe male closely pursues a gravid female through fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate, the pair pressing together momentarily as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs settle among plant leaves, roots or fine gravel. Neither parent takes any further interest in the spawn and both will eat eggs if they remain accessible.

Breeding

Breeding R. ornata in captivity has not been widely documented in the hobbyist literature, but the reproductive biology follows that of the broader Rasbora genus: an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, moss clumps or a gravel substrate, with no parental care whatsoever. Standard practice for small Asian egg-scatterers applies — a conditioning period on live and frozen foods, a shallow spawning tank with soft fine-leaved planting or Java moss, and soft, slightly acidic water kept at the warmer end of the species' range.

Following spawning, adults must be removed promptly to prevent predation on eggs. The eggs hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures, and the free-swimming larvae initially require infusoria or commercially prepared first-foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is typically steady in clean, well-maintained water. Given the species' Vulnerable conservation status, captive propagation from responsibly sourced stock is preferable to reliance on wild-caught specimens.

In the aquarium

Rasbora ornata is an uncommon species in the hobby — it appears occasionally in specialist trade, primarily sourced from Manipur and traded through north-east Indian export channels. Its rarity means it is rarely encountered outside dedicated enthusiast circles. When kept, it should be housed as a shoal of at least six to eight individuals; small rasboras kept in pairs or trios become stressed and fail to display natural behaviour.

A planted aquarium of 23.5 in or more suits the species well, with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5–7.5), gentle filtration that maintains good oxygenation without strong turbulence, and a temperature range of approximately 72–79 °F reflecting its hill-stream origins. Dark substrate and background planting reduce stress and bring out colouration. Given its Vulnerable status and narrow wild range, aquarists sourcing this species should verify the provenance of their stock and favour captive-bred individuals where available.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Rasbora ornata as Vulnerable (VU) in January 2010, reflecting its extremely limited distribution — confirmed from only two river systems within a single Indian state — and the threats bearing on its habitat. The primary pressures are habitat destruction through deforestation and agricultural encroachment in the Manipur hill-stream catchments, degradation of water quality from siltation and pollution, and collection pressure from the aquarium trade.

Manipuris biodiversity hotspot status means the region supports many endemic freshwater species that share R. ornata's vulnerability to catchment-level change. The absence of well-documented captive populations, combined with a tiny wild range and ongoing habitat pressure, means that this species warrants continued monitoring and should be subject to collection controls. Responsible hobbyist demand for captive-bred stock, where it can be established, reduces pressure on the wild population.
