Esomus ahli, the Burmese flying barb, is a slender, surface-oriented cyprinid described by Hora and Mukerji in 1928 and endemic to Myanmar. A member of the genus Esomus — the flying barbs, so named for their exceptionally long, whip-like pectoral barbels and their habit of leaping clear of the water — it haunts the still and slow-moving waters of pools, ditches and seasonally inundated lowlands, spending most of its life at or near the surface. Data on this species remain sparse: it is rarely traded in the aquarium hobby and field studies are limited, but its affinity for disturbed, warm lowland waters across a restricted Myanmar range is well established.

Taxonomy & naming

Esomus ahli was described by Sunder Lal Hora and D. D. Mukerji in 1928. The species epithet ahli honours the German ichthyologist Ernst Ahl (1898–1945), a common practice in early-twentieth-century fish taxonomy. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Esomus ahli Hora & Mukerji, 1928.

The genus Esomus belongs to the family Cyprinidae (now broadly Danionidae in some classifications) and is placed within the danionin assemblage — the broader clade that includes Danio, Devario and their relatives. Esomus is distinguished from those genera chiefly by the elongated maxillary barbels that reach past the pectoral-fin base, a feature shared across the eight or so recognised species of the genus. The group ranges from Sri Lanka and India across mainland Southeast Asia to the Malay Peninsula.

No subspecies or synonyms are widely recognised for E. ahli. The species is closely allied to other mainland-Asian flying barbs such as E. metallicus and E. danricus, and can be confused with them; authoritative identification rests on meristic counts and the precise origin and length of the barbels.

Morphology

Esomus ahli is a small, slender, fusiform cyprinid reaching a maximum recorded length of around 2.5 in standard length (SL). The body is laterally compressed but decidedly elongate, tapering to a slender caudal peduncle. The mouth is small and strongly upturned — a classic surface-feeding adaptation — and bears the genus's hallmark pair of very long maxillary barbels that extend well past the pectoral fins. A shorter pair of rostral barbels is also present.

Colouration in life is subdued but attractive: the dorsal surface is olive-bronze, the flanks silvery with a faint bluish or greenish iridescence, and a thin, often indistinct lateral stripe of darker pigment may be visible in fresh specimens. The fins are mostly hyaline (clear). Sexual dimorphism is typical for the group: females become noticeably deeper-bellied when gravid, while males remain slimmer. Data on live colouration in wild E. ahli specifically are sparse; much of what is known is inferred from closely related congeners.

Habitat

Esomus ahli is endemic to Myanmar, where it occupies pools, ditches and other still or slow-moving freshwater habitats in the lowlands. Like other flying barbs it is strongly associated with the uppermost water column, often found just beneath the surface in calm, warm, shallow waters — exactly the kind of environment created by seasonal rains, flooded paddy fields and roadside ditches.

Temperature preferences for the species are inferred from related congeners (E. metallicus and E. danricus) and from the broadly tropical lowland conditions of its Myanmar range: roughly 75–82 °F is typical for flying barbs in similar habitats. The species is a benthopelagic-to-surface fish that tolerates still or near-still water and moderate turbidity, conditions that characterise the seasonally variable lowland freshwaters of mainland Southeast Asia.

Feeding

Esomus ahli is an opportunistic omnivore that feeds primarily at the water surface. The upturned mouth and surface-oriented posture are adapted for picking up small items at the air-water interface — terrestrial and aquatic insects, small invertebrates and their larvae, zooplankton and organic detritus. Flying barbs generally also consume algae and plant fragments when animal prey is scarce.

In the aquarium, related Esomus species take standard small foods readily: fine flake, micro-pellets, live and frozen daphnia, small bloodworm and brine shrimp. E. ahli, when kept, can be expected to behave similarly. Feeding at the surface is the norm; the fish are quick and competitive at mealtimes and may outpace slower mid-water or bottom-feeding companions.

Mating

Esomus ahli is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built and no parental care is given at any stage. Courtship follows the pattern seen across the danionin cyprinids: a gravid female is pursued by one or more males through vegetation or open water near the surface, with eggs and milt released in brief side-by-side presses among plants or over the substrate.

Data specific to E. ahli are absent from the literature, but the behaviour is consistent across the genus. Spawning is likely triggered by rising temperatures and water level — conditions that mimic the onset of the seasonal rains — and may occur repeatedly throughout a warm season when fish are well conditioned.

Breeding

As with other flying barbs, E. ahli scatters adhesive eggs over fine-leaved aquatic plants, moss, or the bottom substrate, after which the adults give no further attention to the eggs or larvae and will consume them if given access. The eggs are small and adhesive or weakly adhesive, falling into vegetation or settling on the substrate out of reach of the current.

In aquarium practice, a separate shallow breeding tank with a layer of fine Java moss or a mesh above the base, gentle warmth (around 79–82 °F), and soft, slightly acidic to neutral water would be the starting point. Adults should be removed after spawning. Hatching times and larval development are not documented in published literature for this species; hobbyist experience with the congener E. metallicus suggests hatching within two to three days at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming larvae taking infusoria and then newly hatched brine shrimp as first foods.

In the aquarium

Esomus ahli is rarely encountered in the trade and is essentially unknown to most hobbyists outside specialist circles interested in Southeast Asian cyprinids. When kept, it requires a setup that respects its surface-oriented lifestyle: a longer tank with a tight-fitting lid (flying barbs are accomplished jumpers, and the common name refers to this trait), calm or gently filtered water, floating or tall plants near the surface, and warm, soft to moderately hard water around 75–82 °F with a neutral to slightly acidic pH.

It should be kept in groups of at least six to eight — a shoaling species, it is bolder and less stressed in numbers. Tankmates should be peaceful and similarly sized; the fish's speed and surface focus mean it coexists well with mid- and bottom-level species. It is not demanding once settled but the scarcity of captive-bred stock means acquisition requires contacting specialist importers or obtaining fish from other hobbyists.

Conservation

Esomus ahli is listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2010. The assessment notes the species as widely distributed within Myanmar and identifies no specific threats or evidence of population decline at the time of evaluation.

Nonetheless, the lowland pool-and-ditch habitats favoured by flying barbs across mainland Southeast Asia face sustained pressure from agricultural intensification, pesticide runoff from paddy cultivation, drainage and water extraction, and infrastructure development. E. ahli's restriction to Myanmar and its dependence on small, shallow lowland water bodies mean that localised habitat loss could affect populations even without affecting a species-wide IUCN category. The absence of updated population data means that the current LC assessment may not fully reflect on-the-ground changes since 2010.
