Taxonomy & naming
Esomus danrica was described by Francis Hamilton in 1822, originally placed in the genus Cyprinus as was common practice for small cyprinids of the period. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Esomus danrica (Hamilton, 1822), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the subsequent transfer to Esomus. The WoRMS taxonomic record confirms this as the valid species, with no alternative genus combination flagged for the modern treatment.
The genus Esomus is defined chiefly by the elongated maxillary barbels — a distinctive character shared across the flying barbs — and sits within the family Cyprinidae. Esomus is one of the few cyprinid genera where the barbels extend well beyond the head, sometimes nearly reaching the base of the pectoral fin. Several species have been described within the genus, and the species boundaries of some regional populations have historically been debated, but E. danrica in the broad sense is the most widespread member of the genus and the species most commonly encountered in the aquarium trade under the name "flying barb."
Morphology
Esomus danrica is a slender, laterally compressed cyprinid with a notably streamlined, almost fusiform body and a strongly upturned, almost superior mouth — an adaptation for surface feeding. The most immediately distinctive feature is the pair of very long maxillary barbels, which extend posteriorly well beyond the head and can reach nearly to the pectoral fin base in adults, setting it apart at a glance from other small cyprinids of the region.
Coloration is silvery overall, with a dark horizontal mid-lateral stripe running from the snout through the eye to the base of the caudal fin, often accompanied by a narrower golden stripe above it. The fins are generally hyaline, lightly pigmented. FishBase records a maximum total length of 5 in, though most individuals in collections and the aquarium trade are considerably smaller, typically 2–3 in. The species is sexually dimorphic: females are noticeably deeper-bodied and more rounded in the ventral profile, particularly when gravid, while males are slimmer and more torpedo-shaped.
Habitat
Esomus danrica occupies shallow, slow-moving and standing waters across a broad swath of South Asia. Its typical habitats are rice paddies, irrigation ditches, weedy ponds, swamps and the sluggish margins of lowland streams — benthopelagic in profile but strongly surface-oriented in behaviour, spending most of its time in the upper water column and at the surface. FishBase describes it as occurring in ponds and weedy ditches and irrigation canals across Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Myanmar.
Water conditions across this range are variable but tend toward warm, slightly alkaline water: FishBase notes temperatures around 72 °F and above and a pH tending above 8.0 for much of its natural range, while Seriously Fish gives a broader practical range of 68–79 °F and pH 6.0–8.0, with hardness from 18–215 ppm, reflecting the diversity of lowland habitats it can tolerate. Experimental rearing data record optimal pH around 7.60–7.83. The species is not a hill-stream fish and should not be maintained in fast, cool, acidic water.
Feeding
In the wild, Esomus danrica is an omnivore with a preference for small terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates taken at or near the surface. Its upturned mouth and surface-oriented lifestyle suit it to capturing fallen insects, small crustaceans and aquatic insect larvae. FishBase records a trophic level of 2.4, consistent with a generalist invertebrate feeder. The long barbels may assist in locating prey near the surface.
In the aquarium, Seriously Fish notes it accepts dried foods readily but performs best when live and frozen foods are included: bloodworms, daphnia and brine shrimp maintain condition and colour and help keep the fish active and alert. As a fast, surface-active shoaler it competes readily for food, though its small gape limits it to appropriately sized items.
Mating
Esomus danrica is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Like other danionin cyprinids, it forms no pair bond and builds no nest. Spawning behaviour follows the typical pattern for the group: a ripe female is pursued energetically through vegetation by one or more males, the fish pressing close together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The act is brief and may be repeated multiple times in a session.
There is no courtship structure beyond the chase, and no territory is established. The non-adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs scatter among plants, roots or onto the substrate below. Adults show no recognition of their eggs and will consume them and any free-swimming larvae given the opportunity, so prompt separation after spawning is necessary in captivity.
Breeding
Breeding Esomus danrica in captivity follows the standard approach for small egg-scattering cyprinids. A shallow spawning tank furnished with fine-leaved plants or a layer of marbles to protect the eggs from the adults is typical. Well-conditioned fish — fed live and frozen foods for a week or two beforehand — are introduced, and a gentle rise in temperature and a partial water change can trigger spawning, often at first light.
Females may release several hundred eggs per session. The adults are removed after spawning concludes. Eggs hatch in approximately 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and the larvae become free-swimming a few days later, at which point they can be started on infusoria or commercial fry foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. The species is not difficult to breed once conditioned fish are available. No parental care of any kind is provided — adults must be removed promptly to protect eggs and larvae.
In the aquarium
Esomus danrica has been kept in aquaria for decades and is periodically available in the trade, though less commonly than some related cyprinids. Seriously Fish recommends a minimum footprint of 120 × 12 in, reflecting the species' active, fast-swimming nature and its need for open surface swimming space. A tight-fitting lid is essential: the flying barb earns its name by leaping, and gaps in the cover will cost fish. Plants around the margins are appreciated.
The species is best kept in groups of eight or more. It is a shoaling rather than a strict schooling species, and larger groups allow the social hierarchy that develops within the group to be distributed across enough individuals that no single fish is singled out. Companions should be similarly active and robust; slow or long-finned fishes may be stressed by its pace. Water should be warm (68–79 °F), broadly neutral to slightly alkaline (pH 6.0–8.0), and can range from soft to moderately hard. A wasting disease has been documented in the species in captivity, for which no treatment is currently known; prompt quarantine of new individuals and attention to water quality are advisable precautions.
Conservation
Esomus danrica is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, an assessment carried out in 2007. The assessment notes high resilience, with a minimum population doubling time of less than 15 months — a figure consistent with its wide distribution, tolerance of disturbed habitats and documented occurrence in rice paddies and agricultural drainage systems across a large part of South Asia.
The species' range spans Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar — one of the broadest distributions of any freshwater cyprinid in the region — and it is not considered to face significant range-wide threats. Localised pressures from agricultural intensification, water extraction, pesticide use and wetland drainage affect the lowland habitats it depends on across much of the Indo-Gangetic plain, but the species' adaptability and wide range provide a buffer that narrower-ranging endemics of the region do not enjoy.
