Taxonomy & naming
Esomus altus was described by Edward Blyth in 1860, originally from material collected in Burma (present-day Myanmar). The genus Esomus was established to accommodate a group of slender cyprinids sharing the hallmark of greatly elongated pectoral fins, placing them apart from the broader danio assemblage. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Esomus altus (Blyth, 1860), with the parenthetical authority indicating the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Esomus.
Within the family Cyprinidae, Esomus belongs to the danionin lineage alongside Danio and Devario, and modern molecular work has confirmed that the flying barbs form a coherent clade within this group. The genus ranges widely from India and Sri Lanka through mainland Southeast Asia, and several species have been confused or synonymised historically, so older literature should be read with the current Catalog of Fishes to hand.
Morphology
Esomus altus is a slender, fusiform cyprinid reaching up to 5 in total length — notably larger than most flying barb congeners and considerably bigger than the small danios that share its waters. The body is laterally compressed and tapered, with a distinctly upturned, sub-superior mouth adapted for surface feeding. The epithet altus (Latin for 'high' or 'deep') likely refers to the relative body depth compared with allied species.
The defining feature of the genus is the elongated pectoral fins, whose rays extend well beyond those of typical danios, enabling the brief aerial glides that give flying barbs their common name. Coloration in life is generally silvery with an olive-gold dorsal surface, and a lateral stripe or sheen that catches the light; as with many Esomus species the flanks may show a faint iridescent band running from behind the operculum toward the caudal peduncle. Sexual dimorphism is modest, with ripe females appearing fuller in the body.
Habitat
Esomus altus is endemic to Myanmar (formerly Burma) and is recorded as benthopelagic — occupying the water column rather than a strictly bottom-dwelling or exclusively surface-skimming position — though like all Esomus it is strongly associated with the upper water layers. Its habitat consists of warm, slow-moving and still lowland waters: ponds, irrigation ditches, rice paddies, seasonal pools and the gently flowing or backwater sections of lowland river systems.
FishBase records a temperature range of 72–81 °F for this species, consistent with the warm tropical lowlands of central and coastal Myanmar. Waters in its range are typically soft to moderately hard and near neutral in pH, often with lush emergent and floating vegetation at the margins. The species is adapted to the strongly seasonal climate of the region, where water levels and temperatures fluctuate with the monsoon cycle.
Feeding
Esomus altus is an omnivore and surface-oriented micropredator in the manner typical of Esomus. The upturned mouth and forward position in the water column suit a fish that takes insects, small invertebrates and organic matter from at or just below the water's surface, supplemented by small aquatic crustaceans, insect larvae and plant-derived material.
In the aquarium, Esomus altus accepts a wide range of foods readily: quality flake and small floating pellets form a practical staple, and the fish's surface-feeding habit means it is best served by foods that remain at or near the surface for a period before sinking. Live and frozen foods such as daphnia, mosquito larvae and brine shrimp are relished and help maintain colour and breeding condition. Its active, competitive feeding style means it should be housed with similarly fast tankmates to ensure all individuals receive adequate nutrition.
Mating
Esomus altus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, as is typical of the danionin clade to which it belongs. There is no pair bond, no nest construction and no parental care. Spawning in the wild is linked to the monsoon season — rising water temperatures, increasing water levels and the sudden availability of flooded, shallow, vegetated habitat trigger reproductive activity, with peak breeding activity recorded for related Esomus species between June and September.
Courtship follows the classic danio pattern: a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or near the surface, the two pressing close together briefly as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. Multiple spawning events may occur across a season as conditions remain favourable, and a single female may spawn repeatedly. The adhesive eggs settle among plants or substrate where the adults, indifferent to their own spawn, will readily consume them.
Breeding
Like other flying barbs, Esomus altus scatters adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, moss or gravel substrate and gives no parental care whatsoever; adults will eat their own eggs given the opportunity. In aquarium practice, a separate spawning tank with dense fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, or a layer of marbles across the bottom to protect the eggs, is the standard approach. A conditioned pair or group introduced to slightly warmer, freshly added water will often spawn within a day.
A clutch may comprise several hundred eggs, which are small, adhesive and transparent. The adults should be removed after spawning. At tropical temperatures the eggs hatch in approximately two to three days, drawing on yolk reserves before becoming free-swimming. First foods are infusoria and very fine powdered fry food, progressing to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. Growth is reasonably rapid and the species matures within several months under good conditions. Information on captive breeding of Esomus altus specifically is limited; husbandry guidance for the genus is largely extrapolated from the more frequently kept E. danricus.
In the aquarium
Esomus altus is an active, fast-moving shoaling fish that requires space to display natural behaviour. A tank of at least 35.5–39.5 in in length is advisable for a group, with open water in the upper and mid zones and some plantings at the sides and back. A tight-fitting lid is essential: Esomus are accomplished jumpers and will clear a gap in the cover with ease, particularly when startled. The characteristic extended pectoral fins are used for short gliding leaps above the water's surface, and losses to uncovered tanks are common.
Water conditions should reflect the warm lowland Myanmar origin of the species: 72–81 °F, soft to moderately hard, with a broadly neutral pH. The fish does not demand specific chemistry but does best in clean, well-filtered water with some surface movement. It is a peaceful community species suited to comparably sized tankmates that appreciate the same conditions and will not outcompete it at feeding time. A shoal of at least six, and ideally more, keeps the fish settled and allows natural social behaviour to be observed.
Conservation
Esomus altus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, a status confirmed across recent assessment cycles. The species is endemic to Myanmar and, while not commercially exploited as a food fish, it is exposed to the general suite of pressures affecting lowland freshwater fish in mainland Southeast Asia: wetland drainage, conversion of rice paddy systems, irrigation modification, agricultural runoff and increasing urbanisation in the country's lowland river basins.
Myanmar's freshwater systems are among the least studied in the region, and baseline distributional data for many endemic species remain incomplete. The current LC status reflects the absence of evidence of significant decline rather than a thoroughly documented stable population. Ongoing land-use change in Myanmar's lowland watersheds, combined with limited monitoring capacity, warrants continued attention to Esomus altus and other narrowly endemic cyprinids of the region.
