Esomus longimanus, the Mekong flying barb, is a slender, surface-skimming cyprinid of the Mekong basin and adjacent coastal drainages of mainland Southeast Asia. First described from Cambodia by Lunel in 1881 as Nuria longimana, it belongs to the genus Esomus — the flying barbs — a small group named for the extraordinarily long paired barbels that project like streamers from the upper jaw. In the wild it haunts shallow, densely vegetated ditches, canals and ponds, darting in shoals near the surface to intercept insects. Though modestly sized at up to 3 in standard length, it is a capable jumper and a lively presence that finds its way into the regional aquarium trade under its Mekong common name.

Taxonomy & naming

Esomus longimanus was originally described by Lunel in 1881 as Nuria longimana, based on material from Cambodia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Esomus longimanus (Lunel, 1881), with parenthetical authority marking the transfer out of Nuria into the flying-barb genus Esomus. A junior synonym, Esomus goddardi Fowler 1937, was described from mainland Southeast Asia and is now subsumed under this species.

The genus Esomus belongs to the family Cyprinidae and is placed within the subfamily Danioninae, making the flying barbs close relatives of the danios and rasboras proper. The group is defined in large part by the elongated maxillary barbels — dramatically longer than in related genera — that extend well past the head and in some species reach the pectoral fin. The valid species count in Esomus is modest (roughly ten recognised species), distributed from India and Sri Lanka through Myanmar, Thailand, Indochina and the Malay Peninsula.

Morphology

Esomus longimanus is a small, elongate and laterally compressed cyprinid, recorded to a maximum of 3 in standard length (SL) by FishBase, with most individuals in trade and field collections falling in the 2.5–3 in SL range noted by Seriously Fish. The body is streamlined, the dorsal profile almost straight and the ventral profile gently curved, well suited to rapid surface movement.

The most diagnostic feature of all Esomus species is the pair of very long maxillary barbels that originate at the corners of the mouth and extend back along the flanks, setting the genus apart from superficially similar danionins. Coloration is typically silvery or pale olive on the flanks, often with a faint lateral stripe or sheen, and a paler belly. The upturned mouth betrays a surface-dwelling lifestyle. Sexual dimorphism is not well documented for this species; females are presumed to be deeper-bodied when gravid, as in related flying barbs.

Habitat

The species occupies shallow, slow-moving and standing freshwaters across its range in the Mekong basin — Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam — and adjacent coastal drainages of southeastern Thailand, with the Tonlé Sap (Cambodia's great floodplain lake) an important part of its range. The type locality is Cambodia. FishBase also records occurrences on the Malay Peninsula.

Preferred habitats are the sluggish, heavily vegetated margins of ditches, canals, ponds and other stagnant or near-stagnant waters, often with dense submerged and emergent plant growth — classic lowland rice-paddy country. Water conditions span a relatively wide range: temperature 68–82 °F, pH 6.0–8.0, and hardness 18–215 ppm, reflecting both the soft, slightly acidic waters of forested catchments and more nutrient-rich, neutral paddy-field systems. It is a surface and near-surface dweller, staying in the upper water column where insects fall and water-surface prey is available.

Feeding

In the wild, Esomus longimanus feeds primarily on terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates taken at or near the surface. FishBase records zooplankton and insects as the main prey items — a combination typical of surface-dwelling danionins that exploit fallen and emergent insects as a primary food source.

In the aquarium the species adapts well to standard small-fish diets. Seriously Fish recommends live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp) and bloodworm as the basis of its diet, with these invertebrate-based items reflecting its natural prey preference. Dry foods of appropriate small size are accepted but should not be the sole offering; a varied diet keeps the fish in best condition and colour.

Mating

Esomus longimanus, as a member of the Danioninae, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific spawning observations have been published for this species, but its close relationship to other Esomus and danionin fishes indicates spawning behaviour typical of the group: a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, side-by-side contact among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate.

There is no pair bond, no nest construction and no territorial behaviour around a spawning site. The spawning act complete, both sexes swim off independently and pay no further attention to the eggs. The long barbels of Esomus may play a sensory role in finding mates or food in the dense vegetated habitats these fish favour, though their precise function has not been experimentally studied.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Esomus longimanus has not been formally documented in the published literature, and Seriously Fish notes breeding as unreported. Based on the biology of closely related Esomus and danionin species, the reproductive mode is taken to be egg-scattering with adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs deposited over fine-leaved plants, moss or gravel substrate, with no parental care thereafter — adults will consume eggs if they encounter them.

Hobbyists wishing to attempt breeding would follow the standard danionin protocol: a separate, well-planted shallow tank, conditioning on live and frozen foods, and removal of adults after spawning is observed. Eggs of similarly sized danionins typically hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming a few days later and accepting infusoria and micro-foods initially. The species is reportedly available in the aquarium trade and in regional fisheries, suggesting it tolerates captive conditions well, but a confirmed breeding account has yet to appear in the hobby literature.

In the aquarium

The Mekong flying barb is an active, surface-oriented shoaling fish that does best in groups of six or more. Its lively, fast-swimming character and surface preference make it well suited to longer tanks with a generous water surface and some current; planted sections around the edges provide cover and reduce skittishness. It is important to fit the aquarium with a secure, tight-fitting lid: Esomus species are capable jumpers and will exit an uncovered tank.

Water conditions should reflect the species' natural range — temperature 68–82 °F, pH 6.0–8.0, and soft to moderately hard water are all appropriate, giving the keeper considerable flexibility. Compatible tankmates are peaceable fishes of similar size that share the mid-to-lower water column, leaving the surface zone to the flying barbs; avoid slow-moving or long-finned companions that the fish's speed and inquisitive character might unsettle. Diet of live and frozen invertebrates alongside quality dry foods maintains best health. Commercial availability is irregular outside Southeast Asia.

Conservation

Esomus longimanus is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 29 April 2010. The Data Deficient designation reflects insufficient information to make a reliable assessment of extinction risk, not necessarily that the species is rare — its range across the Mekong basin includes large, hydrologically complex systems — but the absence of robust population data prevents a confident conclusion about its status.

The Mekong basin faces substantial anthropogenic pressure: hydropower dam construction fragments river connectivity and alters flood-pulse dynamics critical to lowland fish communities, while agricultural intensification, pesticide use in rice paddies, and wetland drainage reduce the shallow, vegetated habitats the species depends on. FishBase notes that Esomus longimanus has commercial importance in both regional fisheries and the aquarium trade. Ongoing collection pressure combined with habitat loss in the absence of population monitoring underscores the conservation relevance of the DD listing, and a reassessment with current survey data would be valuable.
