Taxonomy & naming
Laubuka hema was formally described by Sudasinghe, Pethiyagoda and Meegaskumbura in 2020 as part of a molecular phylogenetic revision of the Sri Lankan Laubuka. The study resolved L. hema and L. lankensis as a well-supported clade occupying the dry-zone drainage systems of the island, distinct from the wet-zone representatives of the genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid names; Laubuka hema Sudasinghe, Pethiyagoda & Meegaskumbura, 2020 is the accepted combination.
Laubuka is a genus of slender, laterally compressed, surface-oriented danionines distributed across South and Southeast Asia. The genus has been rearranged several times: some species that appear in older literature as Chela or Laubuca are now placed in Laubuka following Kottelat's generic revisions. L. hema is a cryptic species — externally it closely resembles L. lankensis and was presumably lumped with it before molecular tools resolved the two lineages. Its relictual, narrow-range status in the dry zone suggests a lineage that has been isolated from wet-zone relatives for a geologically significant period.
Morphology
Laubuka hema reaches a maximum standard length of approximately 2 in, making it a small to moderately sized member of its genus. Like other Laubuka it is strongly laterally compressed, with a deep-bodied but streamlined profile, a markedly upturned mouth suited to surface feeding, and the large eyes typical of surface-orientated danionines. The species is named for a gold colouration — 'hema' derives from Sanskrit for gold — suggesting a warm, metallic sheen along the flanks, consistent with the reflective lateral stripe patterning seen across the genus.
Formal meristic and morphometric data from the original description distinguish it from L. lankensis, though as a cryptic species the differences are subtle to the naked eye. As with most Laubuka, the fins are relatively small and the body is built for fast, open-water schooling near the surface. Specific details of the lateral-line count, scale rows and coloration pattern remain most precisely documented in the primary description.
Habitat
Laubuka hema is endemic to the headwater reaches of the Gal Oya basin in eastern Sri Lanka, a perhumid stream system draining the island's eastern dry zone. The species occupies the upper, faster-flowing portions of these streams — clear, relatively shallow watercourses running over rock and leaf litter through seasonally dry forest, rather than the lowland sluggish reaches associated with some other Sri Lankan danionines.
No specific water-chemistry data (pH, hardness, temperature range) have been retrieved for this species from available sources, and the Gal Oya basin has not been the subject of the detailed hydrochemical surveys available for some other Sri Lankan river systems. By analogy with other Sri Lankan stream fishes and the character of the basin, the water is likely soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to near-neutral, and subject to strong seasonal fluctuation in level and flow tied to the north-east monsoon. Data remain sparse for this recently described endemic.
Feeding
No published dietary data specific to Laubuka hema are available. By its morphology — strongly upturned mouth, large eyes, surface-orientated body plan — it is clearly adapted to feeding at or near the water surface, in the manner typical of the genus Laubuka and of danionines generally. The diet in the wild almost certainly consists of small invertebrates: terrestrial insects and aquatic insect larvae that fall to or emerge from the surface, supplemented with small aquatic crustaceans and organic material.
In an aquarium setting it would be expected to accept a range of small live and frozen foods (daphnia, bloodworm, brine shrimp) as well as good-quality micro-pellets and flake. Given its surface orientation, food presented at or just below the surface film is likely taken most readily.
Mating
Laubuka hema has not been studied reproductively in the wild or captivity, and no specific spawning observations are on record. As a danionine cyprinid it is a typical egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Spawning in the wild is almost certainly triggered by seasonal cues — rising water levels and warming temperatures associated with the north-east monsoon, which floods the headwater streams of the Gal Oya basin.
Courtship follows the pattern common to danionines: a ripe male drives a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, pressing close as both fish release eggs and milt simultaneously. There is no pair bond and no nest; the event is brief and repeated across several fish in a loose group. The adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs settle among plant material, roots and leaf litter on the streambed.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Laubuka hema have been documented in the available literature or hobby sources, reflecting how recently the species was described and how rarely it reaches the aquarium trade. Based on the biology of close congeners and of danionines generally, breeding in captivity would proceed as an egg-scatter: the adults produce adhesive eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants, moss or a fine substrate, and give no parental care whatsoever. Adults will consume eggs if not separated.
A soft, slightly acidic, well-oxygenated aquarium with abundant fine vegetation and a small temperature rise to simulate monsoon conditions would represent a reasonable starting point. Eggs and fry would be vulnerable to predation by the parents, requiring separation after spawning. Hatching and larval development would follow the rapid trajectory typical of small danionines, with fry becoming free-swimming within a few days and accepting micro-foods shortly after.
In the aquarium
Laubuka hema is essentially unknown in the ornamental trade. As a narrow endemic from a remote headwater basin in eastern Sri Lanka, it is rarely if ever collected for export, and no established husbandry literature exists for the species. Any specimens that did appear would represent a genuine rarity warranting careful, species-only or family-level maintenance.
Based on its ecology, it would require clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate to brisk flow, a spacious tank with open surface swimming room and some vegetation, and a diet of small invertebrate foods. It is a shoaling species and would need to be kept in groups. Water conditions modelled on soft, slightly acidic Sri Lankan hill streams seem most appropriate. Pending actual captive experience, husbandry must remain tentative.
Conservation
Laubuka hema has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; described only in 2020, it falls into the large category of recently named Sri Lankan endemics for which no formal evaluation has yet been completed. Its conservation situation is nonetheless a matter of concern. The species is known only from the headwaters of the Gal Oya basin in eastern Sri Lanka — a restricted, single-basin range that makes it inherently vulnerable to any local disturbance.
The pressures on Sri Lankan inland waters are well-documented: agricultural water extraction, pesticide runoff, siltation from land clearing, and small-scale damming all affect headwater stream communities. The dry-zone river systems of eastern Sri Lanka have received less conservation attention than the wet-zone rivers of the southwest, where many threatened endemics are concentrated. Until a formal IUCN assessment is completed, L. hema should be regarded as potentially threatened on the basis of its tiny known range and the habitat pressures operating in its basin.
