Taxonomy & naming
Laubuka indawgyiana was described by Khin and Chen in 2025 in Zootaxa (volume 5618, issue 2), as part of a broader review of Myanmar's Laubuka species that also yielded the simultaneously described L. myitthaensis. The species epithet indawgyiana is a Latinised toponym referring to Indawgyi Lake — Indawgyi + the Latin suffix -ana, meaning 'of' or 'belonging to' — and squarely anchors the fish to its type locality.
The genus Laubuka, currently placed in the family Danionidae, spans South and Southeast Asia from India and Bangladesh through Myanmar, Thailand and Indochina into southern China. Laubuka was long treated as a subgenus or synonym of Chela, and some older literature refers to members of this lineage under that name; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Laubuka as a valid genus. Molecular analysis of the COI barcode gene showed a genetic distance of 0.043 between L. indawgyiana and its nearest congeners, a value consistent with distinct species in this group.
No common English name has been established for this species. Given its recent description in 2025, it is absent from most databases and popular references.
Morphology
Laubuka indawgyiana is characterised by a distinctly convex dorsal profile and an equally convex ventral profile — a body shape that sets it apart from related species in the genus, which tend toward a flatter ventral outline. The predorsal scale count of 16–18 is a reliable meristic character separating it from congeners with lower counts.
The body lacks strong horizontal stripes or vertical bars; the most notable marking is a small humeral spot just behind the upper edge of the gill cover, a feature shared with several other Laubuka. The overall coloration in life is not described in detail in the available literature, but the genus characteristically shows a silvery or pale lateral field with iridescent highlights. No specific maximum size data for L. indawgyiana has been published; Laubuka species in general are small schooling danionids, typically reaching 1.5–3 in total length.
Habitat
The type locality is Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State, northern Myanmar — the largest lake in Myanmar at approximately 12,000 hectares, with a maximum depth of about 22 metres. The lake lies on a highland plateau and supports a diverse fish community of at least 93 recorded species, including several endemics and recently described forms.
Water chemistry measurements from Indawgyi Lake place the pH broadly between 6.8 and 7.2 under normal conditions, with seasonal variation from around 6.1 in the rainy season to above 9 in the hot season when algal blooms consume dissolved CO₂; total hardness ranges from 60 to 130 mg/l CaCO₃, making this moderately soft to slightly hard water. The lake bottom is principally clayey, with abundant submerged macrophytes, flooded marginal vegetation and submerged woody structure providing shelter and feeding opportunities for smaller fish. Phytoplankton, cyanobacteria and macroalgae form the base of the food web, and the lake's considerable size supports both open-water and littoral-zone communities.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Laubuka indawgyiana has been published. By inference from the broader genus and from the lake's ecology, the species is likely an omnivorous micropredator, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans and zooplankton — from the water column and surface, supplemented by algal material and detritus.
Indawgyi Lake supports dense phytoplankton and cyanobacterial growth that fuels a productive invertebrate community, providing ample food resources for small schooling fish. The upturned or terminal mouth typical of Laubuka is adapted for surface and mid-water feeding rather than benthic foraging.
Mating
No field observations of courtship or spawning behaviour in Laubuka indawgyiana have been documented. Based on the biology of the family Danionidae and the genus Laubuka, the species is almost certainly an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. A driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or open water, and the pair release eggs and milt together in a brief burst of activity; there is no pair bond and no nest construction.
Spawning in northern Myanmar's highland lakes is likely tied to seasonal cues — rising water temperature in spring and early summer, and possibly the onset of the monsoon rains — though the precise timing for this species has not been reported.
Breeding
Laubuka indawgyiana scatters adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, submerged macrophytes or other substrate in the lake shallows; eggs receive no parental care, and adults will consume their own eggs if given the opportunity. This is the universal reproductive strategy in Danionidae, and no departure from it is known for any Laubuka.
The species has not been established in the aquarium hobby, and no captive-breeding records exist as of the date of description. If kept, hobbyists should expect the same approach used for related danionid egg-scatterers: a separate breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or a mesh bottom to protect eggs, removal of adults after spawning, and raising of larvae on infusoria or commercial fry foods followed by newly hatched brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Laubuka indawgyiana is not currently available in the aquarium trade, and no captive-keeping experience has been reported. As a highland lake species from Indawgyi — a water body with moderate hardness, near-neutral pH and presumably cool-to-warm temperatures reflecting its northern Myanmar latitude — it would likely require water parameters closer to those of temperate-to-tropical Asia than the soft, warm blackwater favoured by lowland Sundaland species.
Should the species enter the hobby, the general approach for Laubuka and related danionids applies: a spacious tank with open swimming water in the upper column, gentle to moderate current, fine-leaved vegetation, and a shoal of at least six to ten individuals to sustain schooling behaviour. Given its known range restriction to a single lake and its recent description, specimens are extremely unlikely to appear in the trade in the near future.
Conservation
Laubuka indawgyiana has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; it was described in 2025 and no formal evaluation has been completed. Its apparent restriction to Indawgyi Lake — a single large water body — gives it a naturally limited range, making it potentially vulnerable to any deterioration in lake water quality or ecology.
Indawgyi Lake is a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, affording it some formal protection. However, the broader context of Kachin State — ongoing conflict, artisanal gold mining in lake catchments, and encroachment of agriculture — creates pressures that are difficult to manage. The lake's diverse endemic and recently described fish fauna highlights the importance of sustained monitoring and conservation effort at the site. Until a formal IUCN assessment is conducted, the precautionary principle suggests treating this lake-endemic as a species of potential concern.
