Taxonomy & naming
Laubuka caeruleostigmata was described by Hugh M. Smith in 1931 from the Menam Chao Phraya River below Nakhon Sawan in central Thailand. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the valid authority as Smith, 1931, and places the species in the genus Laubuka — a genus of surface-oriented, elongate danionins distributed from India through mainland Southeast Asia.
The genus name Laubuka was long treated as a synonym of the broad "leaping barb" assemblage once bundled under Chela and related names, but molecular and morphological revisions have progressively clarified the group's limits. GBIF records an alternate spelling variant Laubuca caeruleostigmata (with a 'c'), reflecting earlier usage in some sources; the Catalog of Fishes spelling with 'k' is followed here. The species is no close relative of the true Danio, though both belong to subfamily Danioninae; Laubuka's elongate form and extreme surface-feeding specialisation align it instead with the chela-like gliding minnows.
Morphology
Laubuka caeruleostigmata reaches 2–3 in standard length, making it a medium-sized member of its genus. The body is fusiform and strongly laterally compressed, with a markedly upturned mouth that positions the fish for surface feeding. The epithet caeruleostigmata — from Latin caeruleus (blue/azure) and stigmata (marks or spots) — refers to the blue-tinted spots or markings that distinguish this species from its congeners.
The overall build is streamlined and built for speed at the surface, with a deeply forked caudal fin that allows rapid, directional bursts. The flanks are silvery, with the iridescent blue markings concentrated in the lateral region. Like other Laubuka, the species is adapted to intercept insects at the air–water interface: the upturned mouth, compressed body and high position in the water column all serve this ecological role.
Habitat
This species occupies the main channels and larger tributaries of major river systems in mainland Southeast Asia. Its confirmed range spans the Mekong River system across Laos, Thailand and Cambodia, as well as the Chao Phraya and Mae Klong watersheds of central and western Thailand. The type locality is the Menam Chao Phraya below Nakhon Sawan — a large, lowland river reach.
Laubuka caeruleostigmata is a surface schooler, forming shoals near the water surface in flowing river and stream conditions over rocky substrate. It also uses flooded forests during high-water periods. Water chemistry across its range is moderately variable: Seriously Fish records conditions of pH 6.0–8.0 and hardness 36–215 ppm, with temperatures of 68–79 °F — a broad envelope reflecting its large-river, seasonally fluctuating environment. It is not a soft-water peat-swamp specialist but a fish of open, well-oxygenated flowing water.
Feeding
Laubuka caeruleostigmata is a surface insectivore, targeting exogenous (land-derived) insects that fall or land on the water surface, as well as aquatic invertebrates within the surface film. FishBase characterises its diet as terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates taken at the surface — a feeding mode reflected directly in the upturned mouth and the species' habit of schooling at or very close to the surface layer of large rivers.
In the aquarium it accepts a range of foods but performs best when live and frozen invertebrates form the core of the diet. Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp) and bloodworms are all taken readily. Dried foods are accepted as a supplement. Feeding at the surface or in the upper water column suits this fish's instincts, and surface-floating or slowly sinking foods are preferable to bottom-delivered items.
Mating
Like all danionin cyprinids, Laubuka caeruleostigmata is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no pair bond and no parental investment beyond the act of fertilisation. Spawning is likely triggered by seasonal cues — rising water levels and temperatures associated with the monsoon flooding of the Mekong and Chao Phraya systems — when fish move into shallower, vegetated or flooded-forest margins.
Courtship follows the typical danionin pattern: a driving male pursues a gravid female through the water column, pressing alongside her at the moment of spawning. Eggs and milt are released simultaneously over plants, substrate or among roots; no further attention is given to the spawn. Adults will consume eggs given access to them.
Breeding
In captivity Laubuka caeruleostigmata can be bred using the standard egg-scatterer method. A separate, well-planted breeding tank with fine-leaved vegetation or a mesh bottom layer prevents the adults from consuming the eggs after spawning. Conditioned adults — fed well on live and frozen invertebrates — are introduced, and spawning typically occurs in the morning with the first light.
Adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs are scattered over plants and substrate; adults are removed promptly after spawning. Eggs hatch in two to three days at temperatures in the 72–77 °F range, and the larvae become free-swimming within a few days, at which point they take infusoria followed by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. No parental care is given at any stage.
In the aquarium
Laubuka caeruleostigmata is seldom seen in the trade today — once a regular offering in the ornamental fish market, it has largely disappeared as wild populations have declined. When available it demands a spacious aquarium: as a large-river surface schooler it needs horizontal swimming room and ideally a gentle to moderate current simulating flowing-water conditions. A tank of 47 in or more in length is recommended.
It should be kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals; solitary fish or pairs become stressed and prone to erratic behaviour. The upper third of the tank is its preferred zone, so tankmates should be mid-water or bottom-dwelling species that will not compete for the surface. Water temperature of 68–79 °F, a pH of 6.0–8.0 and moderate hardness suit it well. Surface feeding with live or frozen invertebrates brings out the species' natural behaviour. Its rarity in the trade, combined with its Endangered status, means any captive specimens should be valued and managed carefully.
Conservation
Laubuka caeruleostigmata is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting genuine and ongoing population decline across its Southeast Asian range. The primary threats are habitat degradation and dam construction in the Mekong and Chao Phraya watersheds — the same rivers that have faced intensive hydropower development in recent decades. Dam impoundments alter flow regimes, block migratory corridors and transform the rocky, fast-flowing large-river habitat this species depends on.
The species was formerly common enough to appear routinely in the ornamental trade, but it is now seldom encountered commercially — a shift that itself signals a significant reduction in wild abundance. Conservation of this species is inseparable from the broader challenge of protecting large lowland rivers in mainland Southeast Asia from further fragmentation and degradation.
