Laubuka lankensis is a small, surface-dwelling cyprinid endemic to Sri Lanka, confined to the lowland dry-zone rivers and the Mahaweli River floodplain of the island's interior. It belongs to the genus Laubuka — a group of slender, surface-oriented danionins distributed across South and Southeast Asia — and was described from the Kalu Ganga, where it occupies fast-flowing, boulder-strewn reaches over gravel and pebble beds. Assessed as Near Threatened by the IUCN in 2022, it faces the pressures typical of Sri Lanka's endemic freshwater fauna: a narrow native range, degraded lowland habitat and an agriculture-driven landscape that leaves little intact river corridor.

Taxonomy & naming

Laubuka lankensis was described by P. E. P. Deraniyagala in 1960, with the type locality recorded as the Kalu Ganga in Sri Lanka. The species epithet lankensis is a straightforward Latinisation meaning 'of Lanka' — referring to Sri Lanka — and makes clear the author's intent to mark it as an island endemic from the outset.

The genus Laubuka was long treated as a synonym or subgenus of the widespread Asian danionin genus Chela, from which it was separated on the basis of morphological and molecular differences. Laubuka species share a characteristic superficial body plan with Chela — strongly compressed, with a pronounced keel and a nearly straight dorsal profile — but the genera are now treated as distinct, with Laubuka holding the South and Southeast Asian representatives that differ in fin-ray counts and body proportions. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid names; we follow its current placement of this species in Laubuka.

Within Sri Lanka's freshwater ichthyofauna, L. lankensis is one of several Laubuka species known from the island, and its restricted dry-zone distribution separates it ecologically from any wet-zone congeners.

Morphology

Laubuka lankensis reaches a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 2.5 in (SL), making it a mid-sized member of the genus. Like other Laubuka, its body is markedly compressed laterally, with a ventral keel and an oblique, nearly upturned mouth well-adapted for surface feeding. The dorsal fin count is 10–11 rays and the anal fin 19–23 rays — the long anal fin base characteristic of the genus; vertebral count is recorded at 35.

Precise colour notes for L. lankensis in life are sparse in the literature, but congeners in the genus typically display a silvery to greenish-silver body with a lateral stripe or iridescent midline band and a faintly yellow or clear finnage. The strongly keeled ventral profile and forward-set pectoral fins give the genus a distinctive look among Sri Lankan danionins, and the high anal ray count alone is useful for distinguishing Laubuka from sympatric danio relatives.

Habitat

The species is recorded from rivers and streams of the Sri Lankan lowland dry zone, including the Mahaweli River floodplain — the island's longest river system, draining the central highlands northward and eastward before discharging near Trincomalee. The type locality, the Kalu Ganga, indicates an association with fast-flowing, rocky reaches characterised by gravel and pebble substrates, boulders and strong current — a rather different niche from the still or slow-flowing ditches and backwaters favoured by some lowland Sri Lankan species.

No published water-chemistry data specific to L. lankensis have been captured. Related Laubuka species across South and Southeast Asia inhabit soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral freshwaters in the tropical lowland belt. Given the dry-zone context and the river-channel habitat implied by the type locality, waters are likely warm throughout the year, turbid to moderately clear depending on season, and subject to strong monsoonal fluctuation in flow and depth.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies for L. lankensis are absent from the available literature. Genus-level inference from related Laubuka and the broader Chela-complex points to a surface-oriented micropredator feeding on terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates: small insects fallen to the water surface, aquatic insect larvae, cladocerans, and other zooplankton within the upper water column. The upturned mouth and compressed, keel-bottomed body are classic adaptations for skimming the surface film.

In an aquarium context, captive Laubuka accept most small live and frozen foods — daphnia, artemia nauplii, bloodworm, and crushed flake — readily, and surface-feeding behaviour is pronounced. Variety in the diet maintains condition and natural behaviour for this active, shoaling genus.

Mating

No spawning observations specific to Laubuka lankensis appear in the published record. The genus belongs to the danionin cyprinids, which are uniformly egg-scattering, non-guarding spawners: there is no nest, no pair bond, no territorial defence, and no parental care of eggs or fry. Spawning in related species is triggered by warming water and rising river levels during the seasonal monsoon, when fish move into shallower, vegetated or gravel-bedded areas.

Courtship follows the danionin pattern: a driving male closely pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, pressing alongside her as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The scattered eggs are adhesive to slightly adhesive and lodge among gravel or plant material, out of the immediate current. Neither parent attends the eggs after spawning, and adults will readily consume any eggs they encounter.

Breeding

Laubuka lankensis has not been bred in the hobby to any documented extent, and no aquarium breeding protocol is available in the accessible literature. By analogy with other Laubuka and closely related danionin genera, the species would be expected to scatter small, adhesive eggs over a fine-gravel or plant-covered substrate, with hatching in two to three days at tropical temperatures and free-swimming fry following within a further day or two.

A standard egg-scatterer approach — a separate shallow breeding tank with a fine-mesh or marbled bottom to drop eggs below the adults' reach, a conditioned pair or small group, and a slight rise in temperature — would be the logical starting point. Fry would require infusoria or similar micro-foods initially, transitioning to newly hatched artemia nauplii. Given the species' restricted range and Near Threatened status, any successful captive propagation would be of conservation value.

In the aquarium

Laubuka lankensis is essentially unavailable in the ornamental fish trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside specialist collections or conservation-oriented aquarists. Its care requirements can be inferred from the genus and its type-locality habitat: a well-oxygenated tank with moderate to strong surface movement, a longer footprint to allow open-water swimming, and a fine gravel or sand substrate. As a dry-zone Sri Lankan river fish, it would be kept at tropical temperatures, roughly 75–82 °F, with a broadly neutral pH and soft to moderate hardness.

Like all Laubuka, it is a shoaling species that should be kept in groups of at least six to ensure confident behaviour; singly or in pairs these surface-active fish become shy and stressed. Surface cover in the form of floating plants or overhanging vegetation would help replicate the shaded margins of its native river habitat. Tankmates should be similarly sized, non-aggressive species; its surface orientation means it poses little competition to midwater or bottom-dwelling companions.

Conservation

Laubuka lankensis is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent evaluation completed in 2022. As a species endemic to the Sri Lankan lowland dry zone with a restricted distribution centred on the Mahaweli River floodplain and its associated drainages, it is inherently vulnerable to localised habitat change.

The primary pressures on Sri Lanka's lowland freshwater fauna are well-documented: agricultural expansion and intensification (particularly rice paddy and sugarcane cultivation in the dry zone), extraction of river water for irrigation, sedimentation from deforestation in upper catchments, and direct habitat modification of river channels and floodplains. The fast-flowing, boulder-strewn habitat implied by the Kalu Ganga type locality is particularly sensitive to changes in flow regime and substrate quality. The species does not appear to be a target of the ornamental trade, but any narrowing of its already restricted range would elevate its threat category. Effective conservation of this species is tied to the broader fate of Sri Lanka's lowland dry-zone river systems.
