Taxonomy & naming
Laubuka fasciata was formally described by E. G. Silas in 1958, originally under the combination Chela fasciata. The genus Chela has historically been used as a catch-all for a number of small, laterally compressed, surface-oriented cyprinids from South and Southeast Asia, but molecular and morphological work has progressively split it. The current valid name, Laubuka fasciata (Silas, 1958) — with the authority in parentheses marking the transfer from the original genus — is confirmed by the GBIF taxonomic record and is followed here in line with the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names.
Older literature may list this species as Chela fasciata or under the alternate spelling Laubuca fasciata; both refer to the same fish. The genus Laubuka spans a cluster of similar compressed, high-bodied, surface-orientated species centred on the Indian subcontinent and extending into mainland Southeast Asia. Within the broader danionin assemblage, Laubuka and its relatives occupy an ecological niche analogous to the hatchetfishes of South America — slim, upturned-mouthed fishes perpetually stationed at the water surface.
Morphology
Laubuka fasciata is a small, strongly laterally compressed cyprinid with a markedly upturned mouth well suited for surface feeding. The body profile is deep relative to length, with a convex dorsal outline and a nearly straight or slightly concave ventral profile forward of the pelvic fins — features characteristic of the genus. Seriously Fish records a maximum of 1.5–2 in SL (standard length), while FishBase gives up to 2.5 in total length; in practice most specimens in the wild and in aquaria reach around 1.5–2 in.
The flanks carry a horizontal banding or stripe pattern that is diagnostic of the species and gives it the specific epithet fasciata (banded). Coloration is silvery with an iridescent lateral band running from behind the gill cover to the caudal peduncle; the back is olive to pale brownish and the belly silvery white. Fins are largely hyaline (clear). Sexual dimorphism is mild — females tend to be deeper bodied and more noticeably rounded when gravid; males are slightly slimmer.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Western Ghats of Kerala, southwestern India. Seriously Fish lists its native river drainages as the Bharathapuzha, Chalakudy, Muvattupuzha, Periyar, Ponnani, Meenachil, Achenkovil, Chaliyar and Manimala rivers, with the type locality given as the Annamalai River, Chittur Taluk, Malabar, Kerala. These are rivers of the southwestern escarpment — streams that drain a wet, heavily forested mountain belt before crossing the coastal plain into the Arabian Sea.
Within these systems Laubuka fasciata inhabits both hill-stream reaches and the slower, vegetated marginal zones of lowland rivers. FishBase characterises it as a benthopelagic species of hill streams and slow-moving marginal zones. Water parameters recorded by Seriously Fish place it in a temperature range of 68–79 °F, pH 6.5–7.5 and hardness 36–179 ppm — soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water consistent with the granitic and lateritic geology of the Western Ghats catchments. It is a surface-oriented species, typically found close to the water's surface in shallow, vegetated or debris-strewn margins.
Feeding
Laubuka fasciata is primarily a surface feeder. Seriously Fish notes that it feeds on terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates — insects that have fallen or hatched at the water's surface, small crustaceans and similar items. The upturned mouth and permanently surface-oriented posture are classic adaptations for this mode of feeding, allowing the fish to snap insects from the surface film or intercept emerging aquatic larvae as they break through.
In the aquarium it adapts readily to floating dried foods — good quality micro-pellets and flakes taken at the surface — but benefits from regular supplements of live or frozen items such as daphnia, small bloodworm, micro-crickets and wingless fruit flies (Drosophila), which closely replicate the terrestrial insect component of its wild diet. Its feeding station is strictly surface and upper water column; it rarely competes with mid-water or bottom-dwelling tankmates for food.
Mating
Laubuka fasciata is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the reproductive strategy universal among danionin cyprinids. There is no nest, no pair bond and no parental involvement beyond the act of spawning itself. In condition, males pursue gravid females actively through vegetation and surface-fringing structure; the pair press briefly together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.
The adhesive eggs are scattered among fine-leaved plants, surface roots, submerged moss or over gravelly substrate, where they settle out of sight. The adults give no further attention to eggs or larvae and will consume any eggs they encounter. Spawning readiness in the wild is likely tied to temperature, rainfall seasonality and the flooding of marginal habitat that characterises the monsoon-driven rivers of the Western Ghats.
Breeding
In the aquarium, breeding follows the standard danionin protocol. A separate shallow spawning vessel with fine-leaved plants, a mesh bottom or a thin layer of smooth pebbles prevents the adults from eating the scattered eggs. A well-conditioned group — fed generously on live and frozen invertebrates — is introduced in the evening; spawning typically takes place in the early morning hours.
Eggs are adhesive and small; the adults should be removed promptly after spawning. At 75–79 °F the eggs hatch in approximately two days. The tiny larvae become free-swimming after a further two to three days and accept infusoria or commercial fry foods initially, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow. There is no parental care at any stage. The species has been bred in captivity but is not widely available in the hobby outside India, and captive-bred stock is rarely encountered in the international trade.
In the aquarium
Laubuka fasciata is an elegant but somewhat specialised aquarium fish suited to experienced keepers or those with a particular interest in Indian endemic species. It is a shoaling species and should be kept in groups of at least eight to ten individuals — in smaller numbers it becomes timid and is prone to stress-related losses. The tank should be long and well-planted, with open surface swimming space; the species lives near the top and should not be kept with boisterous or aggressive species that will drive it away from its preferred zone.
Water conditions should reflect its native Western Ghats streams: soft to moderately hard (36–179 ppm hardness), slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5–7.5) and cool by tropical standards — 68–79 °F — with good oxygenation and gentle, preferably surface-disturbing, flow. A tight-fitting lid is essential; like most surface-feeding danionins it is a confident jumper. The diet should include floating foods supplemented frequently with small live and frozen invertebrates. Peaceful tankmates of similar size and water preference are appropriate; Laubuka fasciata is not suited to general community tanks with very different species or conditions.
Conservation
Laubuka fasciata is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment most recently updated in the 2022 release. Its entire known range lies within Kerala, spread across roughly nine river drainages of the Western Ghats — a range that, while spanning multiple watersheds, is fragmented and collectively under significant anthropogenic pressure. The Western Ghats are a global biodiversity hotspot and one of the most deforested regions of India; the rivers Laubuka fasciata depends upon have experienced extensive catchment deforestation, conversion to agriculture (particularly rubber and paddy), sand mining, damming for irrigation and hydropower, and pollution from agricultural runoff and domestic waste.
The species is not known to be targeted heavily by the aquarium trade, which is a relatively minor pressure compared to habitat loss. Its restriction to a single state and its dependence on the relatively clean, vegetated margins of Western Ghats rivers mean that continued degradation of catchment forest cover poses a direct threat to its survival. Protection of riparian vegetation and reduction of siltation and chemical runoff in the river systems of Kerala are the most meaningful conservation interventions for this and many of the other endemic freshwater fishes of the region.
