Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora calliura was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1894. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid combination and confirms the species under genus Rasbora, family Cyprinidae. GBIF and ITIS both record the species as valid, with authority Boulenger, 1894.
The species belongs to the R. sumatrana species group, a complex of several closely related, partially sympatric rasboras distributed across the lowland freshwaters of the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo. Related members of this group include R. sumatrana itself, which reaches up to about 5 in total length and spans the Mekong, Chao Phraya and Mae Khlong drainages as well as the Malay Peninsula and the western Sundaic islands. The taxonomy of this group has not been subject to a recent comprehensive revision, so the boundary between calliura and its closest congeners warrants caution.
The genus Rasbora is a large, historically heterogeneous assemblage of Asian cyprinids. Several former Rasbora species were reassigned in the late 1990s and 2000s to genera such as Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Boraras and Rasboroides as molecular and morphological studies clarified relationships within the family. Rasbora calliura, however, remains placed in Rasbora under current usage.
Morphology
Rasbora calliura is a slender, laterally compressed cyprinid of modest size. As a member of the R. sumatrana group it shares the typical rasbora body plan: an elongate fusiform build, a slightly upturned to terminal mouth, and fine scales covering the flanks. Precise published size data are sparse for this species in particular, but related members of the sumatrana group reach approximately 2.5–5 in total length; R. calliura is likely at the smaller end of that range.
The species epithet calliura — from Greek kallos (beauty) and oura (tail) — draws attention to the caudal fin, suggesting a distinctively marked or pigmented tail region that distinguishes it from close congeners. Exact colouration details for live specimens are not well documented in accessible hobbyist or ichthyological literature, and most published images remain sparse.
Habitat
Rasbora calliura is native to the freshwaters of the Malay Peninsula and is listed in the Malaysia Biodiversity Information System (MyBIS), indicating its occurrence in Malaysian territory on the peninsula and possibly in Sarawak or Sabah on Borneo. The broader R. sumatrana species group is characteristic of lowland and foothill drainages across this region — clear or lightly tannin-stained rivers, forest streams and the margins of peat swamp forest.
Lowland freshwaters of the Malay Peninsula and Sundaic islands are predominantly soft and mildly acidic, especially where peat-swamp or forest-floor drainage provides tannins and organic acids. Temperatures in shaded forest streams typically range from the low to mid twenties Celsius year-round. Related sumatrana-group species tolerate a range from around 73–77 °F in similar habitat types, and this is the best available guide in the absence of species-specific field measurements for R. calliura.
Feeding
Rasbora calliura, like the wider genus, is an opportunistic omnivore that forages in the water column and at the surface. Typical rasbora diets in Southeast Asian stream habitats include small invertebrates — aquatic and terrestrial insects, larvae, microcrustaceans — supplemented with algal filaments, plant fragments and fine organic detritus.
In the aquarium, members of the R. sumatrana group accept a broad range of foods. High-quality small flakes, micro pellets, and live or frozen items such as daphnia, micro-worms and brine shrimp nauplii maintain condition and natural foraging behaviour. Feeding in small quantities two to three times daily suits the modest gut capacity of small stream cyprinids.
Mating
Rasbora calliura is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner of all Rasbora. No parental bond forms beyond the act of spawning, and no nest, territory or egg-guarding behaviour has been documented in this or closely related species. Courtship involves a male closely pursuing a gravid female through submerged vegetation or near fine substrate, the pair pressing briefly together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.
Spawning is most likely triggered by seasonal cues — rising temperature, shifting rainfall and water chemistry — mirroring the monsoon-driven hydrology of the Malay Peninsula and Sundaic lowlands. In the aquarium, gradual temperature elevation combined with the addition of soft, slightly acidic water can prompt conditioning and spawning behaviour in receptive fish.
Breeding
Like all Rasbora, R. calliura scatters adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, moss, roots or the substrate, after which the adults give no parental care and will eat eggs if they encounter them. A separate, well-planted spawning vessel with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss and a mesh or marbles to drop eggs beyond the parents' reach is the standard approach for hobbyist breeding of rasboras in this group.
Coupling conditioned pairs or a small group, a modest rise in temperature, and the addition of fresh, soft water typically stimulate spawning. Eggs hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures; larvae become free-swimming a few days later and accept infusoria or commercial micro-fry foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. The adults should be removed after spawning to protect the eggs. Detailed breeding reports specific to R. calliura are sparse in the accessible literature.
In the aquarium
Rasbora calliura is not a common aquarium fish and is rarely encountered outside Southeast Asia. As a member of the R. sumatrana species group it can be expected to behave much like its relatives: an active, social, mid-water shoaler best kept in groups of six or more, suited to a well-planted community aquarium with soft, mildly acidic to neutral water and moderate temperature in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius.
Companions should be peaceful and of comparable size. Southeast Asian community fish — other small rasboras, danionins, small loaches or small gouramis — make natural and appropriate tankmates. The species is unlikely to be demanding in terms of diet, and standard small-fish foods should be accepted readily. Because published aquarium accounts are sparse, keepers should treat the husbandry notes for the broader sumatrana group as the best available guide.
Conservation
Rasbora calliura has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is currently Not Evaluated (NE). The cache note suggesting a Near Threatened status in a search snippet could not be verified against a primary IUCN assessment page, and no assessment URL exists for this species; the NE designation is the only defensible position without that primary source.
The Malay Peninsula and Sundaic lowlands face serious and ongoing freshwater habitat loss through peat-swamp drainage and conversion to oil palm and other agriculture, deforestation of riparian strips, water abstraction and pollution from agricultural runoff. Many freshwater fishes endemic or near-endemic to the Thai-Malay Peninsula and Borneo are declining even where formal IUCN assessments have not yet caught up with the situation on the ground. A formal threat assessment for R. calliura would require field survey work and updated collection records.
