Rasbora cephalotaenia, the porthole rasbora, is one of the larger members of its genus — a streamlined, laterally compressed cyprinid reaching 5 in that inhabits the blackwater streams and peat-swamp rivers of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo and southern Thailand. Bleeker described it in 1852 from material collected on Belitung Island (then Billiton), and the species has since been found throughout Sundaland's lowland forest drainage, wherever the water runs tea-dark with tannins and the substrate is thick with fallen leaves. It is an infrequently seen aquarium fish that rewards dedicated keepers willing to match its soft, acidic water chemistry.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora cephalotaenia was formally described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1852 from specimens collected on Belitung Island (Billiton), Indonesia, making it one of the older-established members of its diverse genus. The type specimen — lectotype BMNH 1866.5.2.151, measuring 2.5 in standard length — is held in the Natural History Museum, London. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats it as a valid species within Rasbora, and no synonyms or junior names are widely recognised.

The genus Rasbora itself has been substantially revised over the past two decades. Kottelat and Witte (1999) and subsequent authors carved out several segregate genera — Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Rasboroides and others — from the old, sprawling Rasbora concept. Rasbora cephalotaenia remains within the core Rasbora lineage rather than any of these segregates. The epithet cephalotaenia is Greek and Latin: kephalê (head) + taenia (band or stripe), likely referring to a lateral stripe that begins conspicuously near the head.

The species is sometimes called the porthole rasbora in the English-language trade, referring to the small dark blotch or series of spots along the lateral line rather than to any true porthole marking.

Morphology

An adult R. cephalotaenia is a large, torpedo-shaped rasbora reaching 5 in total length — considerably bigger than the familiar harlequin or scissortail rasboras and more comparable in bulk to Rasbora trilineata or R. borapetensis. The body is moderately compressed and the profile streamlined, with a bluntly pointed snout, a terminal to slightly subterminal mouth and well-developed barbels. Coloration is olive-silver on the back, shading to silver-white on the belly, with a dark lateral stripe or series of pigmented spots running along the midline from roughly the operculum to the caudal peduncle — the feature Bleeker's epithet records.

Fins are generally hyaline (transparent to faintly yellowish), and the caudal fin is distinctly forked. Sexual dimorphism is modest: ripe females are deeper-bodied and visibly more rounded in the abdominal region, while males remain slimmer. There are no dramatic colour differences between the sexes, and juveniles show the lateral marking more crisply than adults in some light conditions.

Habitat

Rasbora cephalotaenia is a blackwater specialist of lowland Sundaland. Its natural environment is large streams and rivers draining peat-swamp forest, where the water is deeply stained with tannins and humic acids leached from accumulating layers of partially decomposed plant material. The substrate is typically fine sand or silt overlain with a deep layer of fallen leaves and submerged woody debris; light penetration can be poor and water visibility low.

Chemically, this is some of the most extreme freshwater in the world: pH in intact peat-swamp systems often falls between 3 and 5, conductivity can be near-zero, dissolved oxygen is moderate, and temperatures tend to run warm — 72–82 °F in the wild, with 72–77 °F being the core comfortable range. The species has also been collected in rivers of southern Thailand (a tributary of the Kolok River in Narathiwat Province, 2006), extending the range onto the mainland just north of the peninsula. It was formerly found in Singapore but is considered extirpated there owing to habitat loss.

Feeding

In the wild, R. cephalotaenia is an invertebrate feeder, taking insects — both aerial forms that fall onto the water surface and aquatic larvae — as well as worms, small crustaceans and zooplankton. As a mid-to-upper water column fish in turbid blackwater, it likely relies substantially on motion and lateral-line detection alongside vision to locate prey.

In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of foods without difficulty. Frozen and live bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp are eagerly taken and bring the fish into their best condition; high-quality flake and granule foods are accepted as a staple. Given its adult size — approaching 5 in — smaller prey items and flake foods should be supplemented with larger bloodworm and comparable fare to match its appetite. A varied diet maintains robust health and reduces aggression towards smaller tankmates.

Mating

Rasbora cephalotaenia is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner typical of the genus. No parental bond is formed, and the species does not build nests, guard territories or care for eggs or fry in any way. In the wild, spawning is likely triggered by seasonal flooding, warmer temperatures and the flush of oxygenated water that accompanies the tropical rainy season, conditions that can be approximated in the aquarium by gradual temperature increases and soft water changes.

Courtship consists of the male closely pursuing and driving a gravid female through vegetation or over a weedy or leaf-strewn substrate. The pair come together briefly, releasing eggs and milt simultaneously, and then separate without any guarding behaviour. Adults will consume their own eggs whenever they encounter them, so the eggs must be removed from the parents promptly to achieve any survival.

Breeding

Captive breeding of R. cephalotaenia has been accomplished but is not routine, partly because the species is infrequently available and partly because its size demands a larger, properly conditioned setup than the small rasboras most hobbyists work with. A separate spawning tank of at least 15–20 US gal is advisable, with water that replicates the peat-swamp chemistry: very soft (near-zero hardness), pH 5.0–6.5, temperature 75–79 °F, and gentle filtration through a sponge or peat to maintain the soft, acidic character.

The tank should contain clumps of fine-leaved plants or Java moss over a dark substrate; a mesh or grid placed just above the bottom allows scattered eggs to fall out of the adults' reach. Once eggs are scattered, the parent fish should be removed. Eggs are adhesive and hatch within approximately 18–48 hours; larvae become free-swimming within a day or two of hatching. First foods are infusoria or commercial micro-foods, graduating quickly to baby brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) and finely crushed dry foods as the fry grow.

In the aquarium

Rasbora cephalotaenia is an uncommon but rewarding aquarium fish best suited to the experienced keeper who can meet its water-chemistry requirements. A blackwater biotope approach works best: a larger tank (at least 39.5 in / 40 in long to match adult size), tannin-stained with dried Indian almond (Terminalia catappa) leaves or alder cones, soft peat-filtered water, dim or blocked lighting, and a sandy or leaf-litter substrate. It should be kept in groups — at minimum six individuals — to express natural schooling behaviour and reduce shyness; isolated individuals are skittish and feed poorly.

Compatible tankmates include other large-bodied Sundaland cyprinids and peaceful species that tolerate the same acidic, soft water: larger Rasbora species, Puntigrus or Desmopuntius barbs, or medium loricariids that can handle the low pH. Small, delicate fish may be outcompeted for food given the porthole rasbora's size. This is not a species for hard, alkaline community tanks; soft, acidic water is essential for long-term health and full colour expression.

Conservation

Rasbora cephalotaenia is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 14 January 2019), reflecting its currently broad distribution across Sundaland and the Malay Peninsula and the absence of evidence of a rapid population decline over the relevant three-generation window. However, the peat-swamp and lowland forest habitats on which it depends are among the most threatened ecosystems in Southeast Asia: large-scale drainage for oil palm and pulpwood plantations has destroyed millions of hectares of peat-swamp forest in Sumatra and Borneo, while water abstraction, peat fires and agricultural runoff further degrade the remaining blackwater systems.

The species is extirpated from Singapore, a warning of what unmanaged development can do to lowland fish communities. Its continued LC status depends on the retention of intact peat-swamp catchments and legally protected lowland forest areas across the Malay Peninsula and the Greater Sunda Islands. It is not a heavily traded aquarium species, so collection pressure is minor compared with habitat loss as the primary driver.
