Rasbora paviana is a slender, silver-sided cyprinid of the Mekong and Chao Phraya river systems — one of the larger members of the genus, capable of reaching 4.5 in standard length in adults though aquarium specimens more commonly top out around 3.5 in. Native to mainland Southeast Asia across Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, it is an active, schooling fish of clear forest streams and slower lowland reaches, at home in both swift and languid waters. In the aquarium trade it is known as the sidestripe rasbora, a reference to the clean dark lateral stripe that runs from behind the gill cover to the caudal peduncle. It remains relatively uncommon in hobby circles compared with its smaller congeners, but is prized by keepers of larger community tanks for its elegant proportions and sociable disposition.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora paviana was described by Tirant in 1885, with the type locality given as a stream in Thu-dâu-môt, in what was then Cochinchine française — present-day southern Vietnam. The original description appeared in Excursions et Reconnaissances: Cochinchine française, volume 10, and the lectotype (MNHL 4200-0256) is housed in the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the valid combination as Rasbora paviana Tirant, 1885.

The genus Rasbora is a large and historically catch-all assemblage of Asian cyprinids that has been substantially reorganised over recent decades. Kottelat and Witte (1999) and subsequent workers carved out several satellite genera — Boraras, Trigonostigma, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and others — from what had been a sprawling Rasbora. Rasbora paviana, however, has remained in the core genus through these revisions and is not currently considered a candidate for reclassification. No subspecies are recognised. The common name 'sidestripe rasbora' alludes to the prominent dark lateral band, which distinguishes it from many of the smaller, more plainly coloured members of the genus.

Morphology

Rasbora paviana is one of the larger rasboras in the genus: FishBase records a maximum of 4.5 in SL for unsexed adults, though aquarium sources such as Seriously Fish typically cite around 3.5 in SL as a practical size for captive specimens. The body is elongate and moderately compressed, with the streamlined, torpedo-like profile typical of mid-water schooling cyprinids. The mouth is terminal and relatively small.

The colour pattern is clean and understated. The flanks are silvery to pale gold, overlaid by a distinct dark lateral stripe running from just behind the operculum along the midline to the caudal peduncle, where it often terminates in a small dusky blotch at the base of the caudal fin. The dorsal surface is olive to brownish, the ventral surface pale. Fins are largely hyaline. Sexual dimorphism is moderate: females are noticeably deeper-bodied than males and carry a more rounded abdomen when gravid, while males are the slimmer, more streamlined sex.

Habitat

Rasbora paviana is native to the major river systems of mainland Southeast Asia, with a confirmed range spanning the Mekong, Chao Phraya and Meklong basins across Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. The type locality — a stream in Thu-dâu-môt, southern Vietnam — places the original collection in the lower Mekong drainage, and GBIF occurrence data confirms the species across this broad continental range.

The species occupies a range of freshwater habitats from swift, clear forest streams to slower-moving lowland channels with accumulated leaf litter. Unlike the strongly acidic Sundaland peat-swamp specialists within Rasbora, this mainland species is not confined to blackwater environments. Seriously Fish notes it tolerates both swift and more sluggish waters, suggesting a degree of habitat flexibility consistent with its broad geographic range. It is a schooling, midwater fish in the wild, associating with others of its kind in the open water column above sandy or leafy substrates.

Feeding

Rasbora paviana is an opportunistic invertivore in the wild. Small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates form the bulk of the natural diet — insects and their larvae, small crustaceans and similar zooplankton taken from the water column and surface. This reflects the foraging style of most mid-sized rasboras, which exploit the drift of invertebrate prey through clear stream channels.

In captivity the species accepts a wide range of standard aquarium foods. Seriously Fish notes that small live and frozen items such as Daphnia and Artemia maintain condition and colour best, and these should form a regular part of the diet alongside quality dried flakes or micro-pellets. Given its size relative to many common rasboras, it can handle slightly larger food items than smaller congeners. Multiple small feedings per day suit its active, constantly moving nature.

Mating

Like all Rasbora species, R. paviana is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no bubble-nest, no mouthbrooding, and no parental investment beyond the act of spawning itself. Courtship involves a persistent male pursuing a gravid female through open water or vegetation, the pair drawing close as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.

Spawning is likely tied in the wild to seasonal cues — warmer temperatures, rising water levels and increased flow associated with the monsoon — conditions that can be approximated in the aquarium to condition fish and trigger reproduction. After eggs are laid, the adults pay them no further attention and will consume any they encounter.

Breeding

Rasbora paviana is an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, moss or gravel substrate, with no parental care from either parent. Seriously Fish describes a shallow spawning setup with a mesh base to allow eggs to fall out of the adults' reach as an effective captive approach, mirroring the method used for many cyprinid egg-scatterers.

Conditioned fish spawn readily when well-fed on live and frozen foods. Incubation takes approximately 18 to 48 hours at tropical temperatures, after which the larvae become free-swimming within a few days. The adults should be removed after spawning to prevent predation on the eggs. First foods for the fry are infusorians and finely powdered foods, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow. Water parameters during breeding should sit toward the softer, slightly acidic end of the species' range to maximise fertilisation rates.

In the aquarium

Rasbora paviana is an active, schooling mid-water fish that needs to be kept in groups — a minimum of six individuals, and preferably more, to allow the natural shoaling behaviour that keeps the fish settled and confident. Larger groups produce more impressive displays and reduce the individual stress of open-water living. Given its potential size of up to 3.5–4.5 in, it is better suited to a spacious aquarium of at least 35.5–47 in than to smaller community tanks.

Water conditions should reflect its mainland Southeast Asian origins: Seriously Fish recommends 72–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water (2–12°H). Unlike Sundaland peat-swamp rasboras, the species does not demand extreme acidity or blackwater conditions, and tolerates a broader range than more delicate congeners. Decor can include open swimming areas interspersed with planting, driftwood and leaf litter. Tankmates should be similarly sized and active; very small fishes may be outcompeted for food or, in the case of the smallest species, risk predation from a large adult.

Conservation

Rasbora paviana is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted by Lumbantobing and Vidthayanon (2020). The species holds a broad native range across four countries — Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam — within some of the largest river systems in mainland Southeast Asia, and there is no evidence of range-wide population decline sufficient to warrant a threatened category.

Nonetheless, the broader Mekong basin faces significant and escalating pressure from dam construction, habitat alteration, agricultural runoff and increasing extraction of water resources. The long-term sustainability of lowland fish communities across the lower Mekong is a recognised concern among regional conservation bodies, even for species currently assessed as LC. Captive breeding in the hobby, while not yet a significant conservation tool for this species, maintains accessible populations outside the wild.
