Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora septentrionalis was described by Maurice Kottelat in 2000, with ITIS recording the authority as Kottelat, 2000 and the Catalog of Fishes treating the combination as valid. The species has not been reassigned to another genus: while significant portions of the old aggregate genus Rasbora have been carved out over the past three decades — Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides were each segregated for small Southeast Asian species, and Trigonostigma and Microrasbora removed for other groups — R. septentrionalis remains in Rasbora under the current Catalog of Fishes treatment.
The specific epithet septentrionalis is Latin for "northern," referring to the species' position as one of the most northerly representatives of its genus. Its closest relatives within Rasbora are not firmly established in the published literature, and its phylogenetic position within the genus awaits detailed molecular work.
Morphology
Rasbora septentrionalis is a typical small rasbora: a slim, laterally compressed cyprinid with a forked caudal fin, a small upturned or terminal mouth and the streamlined proportions common to the genus. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2 in SL, placing it in the mid-size range for the genus — larger than the dwarf boraras-group species but smaller than the big riverine rasboras such as R. rasbora.
Detailed coloration and fin-ray counts for this species are not extensively documented in the accessible literature, reflecting how little material has been examined outside the original description. As with most Rasbora, the body is likely pale silver to golden with any lateral stripe or spot markings serving as taxonomic characters; precise pattern data should be sought in Kottelat's original 2000 account.
Habitat
The species is recorded from the Mekong basin in Laos and in Yunnan province, southern China — FishBase lists it as benthopelagic and tropical, inhabiting freshwater systems in the upper portions of the Mekong drainage. This northern, upland distribution sets it apart ecologically from most of the genus: rather than the lowland peat swamps, blackwater forest streams and paddy-margin habitats favoured by Sundaland rasboras, R. septentrionalis occupies the montane streams and tributaries of a great continental river system.
Water conditions in the upper Mekong basin are generally clear and moderately fast-flowing, at cooler temperatures than lowland Southeast Asian rivers, with soft to moderately hard water depending on the local geology. No precise water-chemistry data have been published specifically for this species' collection localities, and the data remain sparse for hobbyists and researchers alike.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Rasbora septentrionalis a trophic level of 3.1 (± 0.4), consistent with an omnivorous to invertivore diet — a level typical of small cyprinids that take aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, insect larvae, small crustaceans and organic detritus from the water column and substrate.
No field dietary studies specific to this species have been published. By analogy with other small Rasbora from flowing montane streams, it likely targets drifting invertebrates and fallen insects, supplemented by algal films and fine organic matter. In the aquarium, small live or frozen invertebrates — daphnia, bloodworm, brine shrimp — alongside a good quality micro-pellet or fine flake would cover its nutritional needs.
Mating
Like virtually all danionin and rasborin cyprinids, Rasbora septentrionalis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific field or aquarium observations of mating behaviour have been published for this species, but the biology of its genus is consistent: a ripe male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over substrate, pressing alongside her as eggs and milt are released simultaneously into the water column.
There is no pair bond and no nest. The adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs settle among fine-leaved plants, moss or gravel, where they receive no further attention from either parent. Spawning in montane stream species is likely triggered by seasonal cues — rising temperature and water levels associated with the monsoon cycle — though specific reproductive phenology for R. septentrionalis is undocumented.
Breeding
No aquarium breeding records for Rasbora septentrionalis are documented in the accessible literature, reflecting its virtual absence from the ornamental fish trade. Based on the standard biology of the genus, breeding in captivity would follow the typical egg-scatterer pattern: a separate spawning vessel with fine-leaved plants or a mesh over the bottom to protect eggs from being eaten, a small temperature increase and fresh-water addition to stimulate spawning, and removal of adults after eggs are laid.
A female rasbora of this size would likely produce a few dozen to a few hundred eggs per spawning event. Eggs would be expected to hatch within two to three days at appropriate temperatures, with free-swimming fry emerging a few days later to take infusoria and subsequently newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. All of this is inferred from congeners; direct data for this species are absent from the literature.
In the aquarium
Rasbora septentrionalis is essentially absent from the ornamental fish trade and has not been established as an aquarium subject. Its remote origin in the upper Mekong montane zone means that wild-caught specimens are rarely if ever exported, and captive-bred stocks do not exist commercially. For the specialist interested in Mekong cyprinids, it would be an unusual and scientifically interesting subject.
If kept, an aquarium replicating its native habitat — clean, well-oxygenated, moderately flowing water at the cooler end of the tropical range, with a neutral to slightly acidic pH and moderate hardness — would be appropriate. Like all rasboras it is a shoaling species and would need to be kept in a group. The scarcity of husbandry data means any keeper would effectively be working in uncharted territory and contributing new knowledge to the hobby.
Conservation
Rasbora septentrionalis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated on 22 January 2011 (IUCN 2022.2). The Data Deficient rating reflects the limited information available on the species' population size, distribution extent, and ecological requirements rather than a known absence of threats — a species assessed as DD may face significant pressures that cannot yet be quantified.
The upper Mekong basin, including parts of Laos and Yunnan where the species is recorded, is subject to ongoing pressures from hydropower development, sedimentation from upland agriculture and deforestation, and water extraction. Large dam projects on the mainstream Mekong and its tributaries alter flow regimes and sediment loads with consequences for montane stream fish communities. The species' restricted known range and its occurrence in a river basin undergoing rapid infrastructure change make it a candidate for future reassessment once better distributional and population data are available.
