Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora sumatrana was described by the Dutch colonial physician-naturalist Pieter Bleeker in 1852, based on specimens collected from Solok in western Sumatra, Indonesia. The type series is deposited as lectotype RMNH 7038, with paralectotypes at the BMNH and RMNH. The original description appeared in Bleeker's 'Diagnostische beschrijvingen' (Diagnostic descriptions of new or little-known fish species of Sumatra), one of his prolific series of Malay Archipelago ichthyological papers. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Rasbora sumatrana (Bleeker, 1852), with the parenthetical authority indicating that Bleeker did not place the fish originally in Rasbora under that exact combination.
The genus Rasbora has been extensively revised since the mid-twentieth century. Kottelat and others carved out several satellite genera — Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Rasboroides and others — from what was once a very broadly defined Rasbora. Rasbora sumatrana, however, is retained in the core genus in current usage. Its exact affinities within Rasbora are not well resolved in the published literature available to this account.
Morphology
Rasbora sumatrana is a relatively large rasbora, with FishBase recording a maximum total length of 5 in (males or unsexed), with standard length around 4.5 in — substantially bigger than the familiar harlequin or scissortail rasboras. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, typical of the genus, with a small, somewhat terminal to slightly upturned mouth suited to picking prey from the water column and surface film.
Color in life is not exhaustively described in the available literature for this species. Like many Rasbora species it presumably carries a lateral stripe or series of dark markings against a silvery to golden-olive body, though the precise pattern is not captured in detail by the sources consulted. Sexual dimorphism details are sparse; gravid females can be expected to show a fuller abdomen than males, as is typical across the genus.
Habitat
FishBase describes Rasbora sumatrana as inhabiting streams and creeks with moderate to swift, relatively cold and well-oxygenated water, ranging from hill streams to lowland environments. This suggests a species at home in the kind of clear, fast-flowing upland tributaries that cut through forested terrain across its range, as well as transitional lowland reaches.
The species is distributed across the Mekong, Chao Phraya and Mae Khlong basins in southeastern Thailand and southwestern Cambodia, south through the Malay Peninsula, into Sumatra and western Borneo. This broad range spans both wetter Sundaland environments and the more continental river systems of mainland Indochina. Water chemistry preferences are not precisely documented for this species; the broad rasbora genus encompasses species tolerating everything from soft blackwater to harder, neutral streams, and sumatrana's hill-stream to lowland spread suggests adaptability rather than a narrow niche.
Feeding
Rasbora sumatrana is a micropredator in the wild, feeding on the small invertebrates available in its stream and creek habitats — aquatic insect larvae, terrestrial insects falling to the surface, small crustaceans and zooplankton. This is the typical diet across the genus, suited to a fish that is active in the mid-water and surface layers.
In the aquarium, specimens of this size accept a varied diet with little difficulty. Sinking and floating pellets, good-quality flake foods, and regular supplements of live or frozen items — daphnia, bloodworm, artemia — will maintain condition and colour. At up to 5 in, this is a fish that can take suitably sized live and frozen prey and will benefit from meaty items more so than its smaller rasbora relatives.
Mating
Rasbora sumatrana is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the reproductive mode universal to Rasbora and the wider danionine/cyprinid lineage. No nest is built, no pair bond is formed beyond the spawning act, and neither parent remains with the eggs or fry after spawning is complete.
Courtship follows the pattern typical of the genus: males in breeding condition chase gravid females through vegetation or along the substrate, pressing alongside them as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The fertilised eggs fall away among plants, roots or gravel and receive no further attention. In densely planted or naturally complex habitats, some eggs may escape notice of the parents; in bare environments adults will consume them readily.
Breeding
Specific breeding accounts for Rasbora sumatrana in the aquarium literature are sparse, but the species can be expected to follow the standard rasbora protocol. A dedicated spawning tank with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a well-conditioned group of adults, gives eggs the best chance of survival. Separating adults from the spawning vessel immediately after spawning prevents predation on the eggs.
FishBase records a generation time of approximately 2.8 years and high resilience, with minimum population doubling time under 15 months — figures that suggest a reasonably fast-growing species once past the larval stage. Eggs hatch in two to three days at tropical temperatures; fry are initially small and require appropriately sized first foods such as infusoria or commercial fry foods, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow.
In the aquarium
At up to 5 in total length, Rasbora sumatrana is a species that needs a spacious aquarium — a tank of at least 39.5–47 in for a small group is a reasonable minimum. Like all rasboras it is a shoaling fish that must be kept in numbers; solitary specimens or pairs become stressed and retiring. A group of six or more allows natural social behaviour and the sweeping, coordinated movement that makes large rasboras compelling to watch.
The species' hill-stream to lowland range suggests tolerance of moderate water movement and well-oxygenated conditions. Temperature in the range of approximately 75–81 °F and a broadly neutral to slightly acidic pH (around 6.8–7.8) should suit it, though precise species-level data remain limited. It is an active, mid-water fish that will do best with robust, active companions of comparable size rather than small nano-fish that it might disturb or outcompete at feeding time.
Conservation
Rasbora sumatrana is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment). The Data Deficient listing does not imply that the species is secure — it reflects that insufficient information exists to determine its conservation status. Given its broad range across mainland Southeast Asia and Sundaland, it may well be locally common in intact forest streams, but habitat pressures across its entire range are substantial.
Deforestation, agricultural expansion, sedimentation of forest streams, and water extraction continue to degrade stream habitats throughout the Mekong basin, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo. Western Borneo and large parts of Sumatra have seen dramatic habitat loss over recent decades. Until systematic population surveys are conducted across the species' range, its true status remains uncertain. The Data Deficient listing should be read as a flag for further research, not reassurance.
