Taxonomy & naming
Anguilla interioris was described by Gilbert Percy Whitley in 1938, with the type locality given as the Lorang River, Sumatra, Indonesia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises it as a valid species within the genus Anguilla, family Anguillidae, order Anguilliformes — the true eels. No junior synonyms are recorded. The species epithet interioris is Latin for 'interior' or 'inland', likely reflecting the inland-river type locality.
Anguilla interioris belongs to the large Indo-Pacific radiation of the genus, which includes several morphologically similar tropical species such as A. marmorata (the giant mottled eel, distributed across the Indo-Pacific), A. bengalensis (Indian mottled eel), and A. bicolor (Indonesian shortfinned eel). Whitley distinguished A. interioris from A. marmorata in 1938 on the basis of meristic and morphological characters; the two taxa are superficially similar, and published records of the species remain sparse. Cryptic diversity is a genuine concern within tropical Anguilla: DNA barcoding studies of the group have shown that morphologically similar species are difficult to separate without genetic evidence, and the limits of A. interioris relative to other Sumatran Anguilla have not been exhaustively tested with molecular data.
The Anguilliformes are the true eels — a large and diverse order of teleost fishes that includes some 800 species, among them morays, snake eels, garden eels and conger eels. Anguillidae is unique within the order in combining a freshwater growth phase with a marine spawning migration. Spiny eels (Mastacembelidae) and swamp eels (Synbranchidae) are not related to Anguilliformes; their eel-like form is convergent, not shared ancestry.
Morphology
As a member of Anguilla, A. interioris has the characteristic body plan of the family: a long, muscular, cylindrical trunk tapering toward the tail, with the dorsal, caudal and anal fins confluent into a single continuous fringe around the posterior body. The snout is rounded, the mouth moderate and terminal with fine teeth, and the gill openings are reduced to small lateral slits. The skin is smooth and carries minute embedded scales that are often invisible to the naked eye; a heavy mucus coat is characteristic of the family.
Published size data for A. interioris specifically are scarce. Based on its placement among the tropical Indo-Pacific Anguilla and the few records available, it is estimated to reach approximately 15.5–23.5 in total length, putting it toward the smaller end of the genus; the giant mottled eel A. marmorata reaches well over a metre, but many tropical Anguilla are more modest in size. As in most of the genus, females grow larger than males, a pattern linked to their higher energy demands for the oceanic spawning migration. The longfinned designation in the common name refers to the longer dorsal fin relative to the anal fin, a character used to group species within the genus.
Habitat
Anguilla interioris is known from the freshwater and brackish environments of Sumatra, Indonesia, where it inhabits tropical rivers and their associated estuarine and lacustrine habitats. The type locality, the Lorang River in Sumatra, is a lowland to inland tropical river, and the species name interioris ('interior') suggests an affinity for inland reaches rather than estuarine margins, though all Anguilla use estuaries during their juvenile glass-eel stage.
Like all members of the genus, the growth habitat is freshwater — rivers, lakes, swamps and brackish lagoons — where juveniles and subadults feed and grow for years before undertaking the oceanic spawning migration. Tropical Sumatran rivers are warm throughout the year, typically 75–82 °F at lower elevations, with relatively soft, near-neutral to slightly acidic water. The species tolerates seasonal fluctuations in flow and temperature associated with the Indonesian monsoon cycle. Firm habitat data for this species specifically are not published; the above reflects conditions at the type locality and the general ecology of tropical Anguilla.
Feeding
Anguilla interioris, like all members of the family, is a predatory carnivore during its freshwater growth phase. True eels of the genus Anguilla are opportunistic benthic hunters, feeding nocturnally on a range of prey including benthic invertebrates (insect larvae, worms, crustaceans, molluscs) and small fishes. The elongate, muscular body and relatively small, probing mouth are well adapted to foraging in and around substrate, root masses, and submerged debris.
Detailed dietary studies for A. interioris specifically have not been published. The feeding ecology attributed here follows the well-documented pattern across the genus, in which diet shifts with body size: small juveniles and glass eels take invertebrates predominantly, while larger adults include fish in their diet with increasing frequency. True eels are primarily nocturnal foragers, sheltering under substrate and in refugia by day.
Mating
All Anguilla species are catadromous and semelparous: they mate only once, at sea, at the end of a long oceanic migration, and the adults die after spawning. The mating biology of A. interioris has not been studied directly. What is known follows from the biology of the genus: when adults reach reproductive maturity — after many years of growth in fresh water — they undergo a dramatic physiological transformation, stopping feeding, developing enlarged eyes suited to deep oceanic conditions, and reorganising their gut in preparation for the long migration.
Adults then migrate downriver and out to sea, travelling to oceanic spawning grounds whose location for tropical Indo-Pacific Anguilla is not precisely known (the European and American eels migrate to the Sargasso Sea, while the spawning sites of tropical Pacific species are inferred from leptocephalus distributions and oceanographic modelling but have not been confirmed). Males and females from across the freshwater range converge at these sites; spawning takes place in the open ocean. The adults do not survive.
Breeding
Anguilla interioris cannot be bred in captivity — this is a fundamental biological constraint, not a husbandry challenge. All true eels of the family Anguillidae spawn once at sea and die; the combination of catadromous migration, oceanic spawning grounds, and semelparity means that no stage of reproduction can be replicated in a freshwater aquarium or pond. Eel 'farming', where it occurs, relies entirely on catching wild-born glass eels (the juvenile stage that arrives at river mouths after drifting inshore as oceanic leptocephalus larvae) and growing them in controlled conditions — it is aquaculture built on wild harvest, not captive breeding.
After spawning, the fertilised eggs develop into leaf-shaped leptocephalus larvae that drift with ocean currents, sometimes for months, before metamorphosing into the transparent glass-eel stage and actively seeking river mouths. Juveniles then migrate upstream into freshwater systems where they spend the bulk of their lives. No parental care is given at any stage; the adults die at sea and play no further role in the offspring's development.
In the aquarium
Anguilla interioris is not a conventional aquarium fish and is rarely, if ever, encountered in the ornamental trade. True eels of the genus Anguilla are occasionally kept by specialist hobbyists — particularly glass eels or small juveniles caught locally — but they present significant challenges: they are powerful escape artists capable of squeezing through any gap in a tank lid, they require a tight-fitting, fully sealed cover without exception, and they are scaleless and acutely sensitive to copper-based medications and unstable water chemistry.
Young Anguilla in captivity can be fed earthworms, bloodworm, and small pieces of fish or crustacean offered after dark. They are nocturnal and will burrow into a soft sand substrate during the day; a layer of fine sand at least several centimetres deep is necessary for their welfare. Adults grow large relative to most home aquariums. More importantly, as a species native to Indonesia, A. interioris may be subject to national or regional fisheries and wildlife regulations, and its collection or keeping may require permits. Hobbyists interested in true eels should verify local legal status before acquiring any specimen.
Conservation
Anguilla interioris has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no official conservation status (Not Evaluated). Published biological and population data for the species are minimal; it is known from its type locality in Sumatra and from Indonesian freshwater ecoregions more broadly, but systematic survey data are lacking.
The broader conservation picture for the genus Anguilla is alarming: A. anguilla (European eel) is Critically Endangered, A. rostrata (American eel) is Endangered, and A. japonica (Japanese eel) is Endangered — all driven by a combination of overfishing of glass eels for aquaculture, barriers to migration (dams, weirs), habitat degradation, and the invasive parasitic nematode Anguillicola crassus. Tropical Anguilla species in the Indo-Pacific have received far less conservation scrutiny, but narrow-range or poorly-known species like A. interioris face the same suite of pressures: deforestation and river modification in Sumatra are among the most intense anywhere in the world, and glass-eel harvesting for the regional aquaculture industry affects tropical Anguilla throughout Southeast Asia. Until A. interioris is formally assessed with adequate survey data, its status remains genuinely unknown.
